It was one of the I3 countries which took part in the Games of the 1st Olympiad and yet has never had the honour of hosting the Games. Bulgaria organized the Xth Olympic Congress in Varna (‘Sport for a World of Peace’), restoring after a forty-year break one of the traditions of the Olympic Movement. Sofia has 711 sports facilities and, with the furthest at less than 23 km away, several winter sports resorts offering highly-developed facilities. Numerous theatres and museums make the city a lively cultural centre. For the Games, Sofia is planning to improve the existing infrastructure as well as to construct new runs at Vitosha and other sites in order to accelerate the programme of social development and strengthen a long-standing commitment within the field of sport for all. With a population of over I.2 million, the capital of Bulgaria is situated in a valley surrounded by five mountain massifs 500 m above sea level. The Games could take place between 5th and 20th February. During this period, the snow depth ranges from 24 to I53 cms depending on the different venues ; day length is IO hours and the temperature may vary from — 8° C to + 1° C in the city. The President of the candidature committee is Mr. Georgi Yordanov, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Culture, Science and Education. And 1992 - The main Olympic sports are widely practised and the Bulgarians have a distinct interest in international sporting events. The NOC was founded in 1923, and its President is Mr. Ivan Slavkov. General Vladimir Stoytchev has been the IOC member since 1952. Bulgaria has hosted two sessions of the IOC, in 1957 in Sofia and in 1973 in Varna where the Xth Congress took place at the same date. Bulgaria has organized many World and European Championships in a fair range of Olympic sports, including skiing and ice hockey. Sofia organized the Summer Universiade in 1961 and 1977 and the Winter Universiade in 1982. No version of the Olympic Games has taken place in Bulgaria. Sofia, which is the capital, is located in a valley surrounded by five mountains. It is situated at an altitude of 550 metres. Its climate is alpine and sunny. The snowfall in February ranges from 24 cm to 153 cm. The average duration of the day is ten hours and the average temperature is + 0.5°C in the town and — 7.5° C in the centre of Aleko.
