Premier's office ransacked by Anti Poverty Committee

Global TV News has breaking news of the Premier's office being ransacked by three members of the APC. The office was left in shambles after two men and one women ringed the bell of the 7th floor downtown office, claiming to be delivering flowers. Once the door had opened, they barged in and began tearing the place apart.

A Global news camera was already there for an interview with someone at the office and caught the entire thing happening on camera. Vancouver Police Department has arrested and made charges towards the three criminals. Security in the future at the offices of the Premier, cabinet, and VANOC board members will be increased in light of this incident. Two office workers, both female, are said to be traumatized with shards of glass scattered around the office.

David Cunningham of the Anti-Poverty Committee, a group that wants to cancel Olympic funding towards social housing, has said protestors intend to “symbolically evict” the Vancouver 2010 board members in the same manner people have been displaced from the downtown lower east side.

He said, “we have found where their offices are, we have found where their homes are. We’re going to go and we’re going to evict them from their offices like they’ve evicted hundreds of our brothers and sisters. What we do plan on doing is targeting each and every individual on the VANOC board and holding them individually responsible for what they have done to the hundreds of people on the Downtown Eastside”.

For those who do not live in Canada, the "Premier" is the equivalent of a state governor in the U.S.

How the hell could protesters even get close to the Premier's office? Talk about shoddy security!

Welcome to Canada. ;)

Just joking. This is the premier's downtown office. It's not his office at Parliament in Victoria, which I'd imagine would have higher security.

You'd be amazed to know that there are no gates in and out of Parliament Hill in Ottawa. You could go in and kill the Prime Minister if you wanted too.....a plot to do just that was unfoiled last year if you remember, which also included truck bombing a Canadian intelligence office in Toronto and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation headquarters.

have you been to parliament hill? there are definitely security lines/x-ray scanners.

I meant outside. It's not like the White House with everything enclosed in a fence and the public is kept out.

Olympic protesters trash premier's office

By Catherine Rolfsen, Vancouver Sun

Published: Tuesday, May 22, 2007

Three members of the Olympic-fighting Anti-Poverty Committee were arrested today after ransacking Premier Gordon Campbell's office in downtown Vancouver.

About 2 p.m., two men and a young woman told a receptionist on the intercom at Campbell's office on the seventh floor of Canada Place they'd come to deliver flowers, the premier's press secretary Mike Morton said.

When the receptionist opened the door, the three barged in, broke vases, knocked over planters and threw water onto a fax machine, he said.

he receptionist was upset but not harmed physically, Morton said.

The three members of the Anti-Poverty Committee, which has become increasingly critical of the 2010 Olympics, were attempting to deliver an "eviction notice" to Campbell adviser Ken Dobell, who is also a member of the Vanoc board of directors, Anti-Poverty Committee organizer David Cunningham said.

"We targeted him to show that there really is no conflict of interest between the government and big business, and the Olympics is the one that is profiting from this," Cunningham said.

Neither Dobell nor Campbell were in the office.

Cunningham said the three boxed up Dobell's belongings and threw them into the office lobby to give him what Cunningham said was a taste of evictions experienced by poor people on the Downtown Eastside.

Vancouver police Const. Howard Chow said the three were in custody tonight and will face unspecified charges Wednesday.

"These aren't protesters, these aren't activists," Chow said. "Those that are intent in showing up at businesses or at your homes, intent on breaking the law, intent on damaging property, are criminals and will be charged accordingly."

Cunningham made headlines last week when he said the Anti-Poverty Committee has "found out where their [Vanoc board members'] homes are" and "when [they] feel safe in their offices, that's when [the APC] will evict them."

He was subsequently arrested on a charge of uttering threats and released under the condition that he have no contact with members of Vanoc, Cunningham said.

While the office was being raided, Cunningham said he was holding a news conference at the committee headquarters in the Downtown Eastside.

I remember hearing either last year or the year before, that someone was able to walk into the Prime Minister's office and leave a bomb or grenade on his desk. Fortunately it was defused and nobody was hurt.

If that doesn't tell you there wasn't enough security then, I wonder what it is like now at Parliment Hill.

From the APC's website:

KEN DOBELL EVICTED BY APC

May 22/07

The Anti-Poverty Committee successfully launched its VANOC eviction campaign by evicting Ken Dobell from his office located at the World Trade and Convention Centre in the Office of the Premiere. His belongings have been put into boxes and thrown into the hall.

The people have announced that Ken Dobell is the perfect mascot for the 2010 games. He proves that there is no conflict between big business and all levels of Government.

Ken Dobell is, among other things, director of the 2010 Legacies Now Society and the Canadian Council for Public-private partnerships. A member of the board of the 2010 Bid Corporation in its early years, Dobell now serves on VANOC’s Board of Directors, where he chairs its Finance Committee.

When not acting as a symbolic figurehead, Kenny rakes in $250-an hour as ‘special adviser’ to the premier Gordon Campbell. Not so coincidentally his second job is as a lobbyist for the City of Vancouver, which has hired him to influence Campbell on development issues. What this amounts to is pillaging public resources for private profit.

This eviction was carried out in a non-violent manner with respect to the workers inside. This is contrary to the evictions that take place every day in the Downtown Eastside. Often the police serve as the City’s eviction service and assist in the displacement of people from their homes. In cases such as the Marr Hotel and the Burns Block, poor people are evicted from their homes violently. In the case of the Burns Block people who had lived there for 20 years where evicted with less then 30 minutes notice. Their belongings thrown to the curb.

So long as people are being evicted from their homes to make room for the 2010 Olympic games, we will continue targeting VANOC representatives in their offices. It is from these offices that life and death decisions are made.

We plan on escalating our siege and making the profiteering off displacing poor people from their homes and territories too costly to continue. To get involved in this campaign and other organizing efforts of the APC.

NO OLYMPICS ON STOLEN NATIVE LAND! NO 2010!

DEMANDS

1. IMMEDIATE CANCELLATION OF THE 2010 OLYMPIC GAMES.

2. DIRECTION OF ALL OLYMPIC FUNDS TO NEW HOUSING AND SOCIAL PROGRAMS.

3. WITHDRAWAL OF COLONIAL OCCUPIERS FROM ALL UNCEDED INDIGENOUS TERRITORY.

4. DOLLAR-FOR-DOLLAR REINSTATEMENT OF ALL FUNDING CUT TO SOCIAL PROGRAMS BY THE PROVINCIAL LIBERAL GOVERNMENT.

5. KEN DOBELL’S IMMEDIATE RESIGNATION FROM AT LEAST TWO OF THREE CONFLICTING POSITIONS.

Residents of Downtown Eastside also not impressed with tactics of the Anti-Poverty Committee

Wednesday, May 23 - 06:45:00 AM

Tamara Slobogean

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The Anti-Poverty Committee has added another violent event to its reputation after trashing the premier's downtown offices but who are they helping?

It turns out their tactics aren't popular with the people the APC is supposed to be representing. One man this morning says that on the streets of the Downtown Eastside, the fear the Olympics will drive prices up and push more people out onto the street is real but he says the way the message is being delivered by a few protestors isn't doing those who need a voice any good.

He says those on the APC probably have nice cars, nice homes and good meals but those who live on the street don't have any of those things and must eat out of garbage cans. He adds they're just not in the same category.

Yesterday protestors stormed parts of some BC government offices downtown, and last week they threatened individual Olympic organizers. Despite their growing unpopularity with the public in general, and now among those they're supposed to represent, the APC vows to continue its disturbances, as long as the poor are being displaced.

we should so organize a protest to protest the protesters. i have been wanting to do that for months now. if i can i would make a trip to vancouver to take part, these people are idiots who just want to make a scene. does the APC have an office? we should go vandalize it and see how they feel. half of them dont even know why theyre doing it they do it because they think its fun. one of the ones at the premier's office said he doesn't want any political discussion. why? because he has no clue why hes doing it! if they really had a problem with people being evicted then go to china its worse there. but then again they dont have the problem of lazy people who want the government to hold their hand their entire lives.

So these were the basic points if you missed the live interview:

- David Cunningham works 2 days a week for the Downtown Eastside Residents Association

- he is both mentally and physically capable of employment

- he is reluctant to go work more than 2 days a week, as the radio hosts suggested "how about working 5 days a week instead?"

- radio hosts: you work up from the bottom to the top, you don't go from 0 to 100

- he is reluctant to go elsewhere to find employment, where available (Port Moody even to be a handymen), where housing is also more available

- he thinks he is entitled to housing and food; entitled to rely on the gov't

- Pratt and Taylor got angry, talked about how they also worked from bottom to top to their positions....working for $326 a month in the interior when they were 18.

Sadly, this has been the exact same thing I've been saying about people like Cunningham and the APC. I always knew they were frauds.

Mayor decries violent anti-Olympic protests

Catherine Rolfsen, Vancouver Sun

Published: Wednesday, May 23, 2007

Members of a group calling itself "The Anti-Poverty Committee" are hurting the cause of fighting homelessness and tarnishing the city's international reputation through their increasingly violent protest tactics, Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan said today.

"It think it gives the city a black eye," Sullivan said during a press conference. "It doesn't make Vancouver look good."

The Anti-Poverty Committee has vowed to evict board members of the Vancouver Olympic organizing committee from their homes and offices.

Three members of the group were arrestedTuesday after ransacking the lobby of Premier Gordon Campbell's downtown Vancouver office.

Sullivan said he's worried about the police resources being devoted to the group.

"Every dollar and every hour of a police officer's time spent on worrying about protesters is time that can't be spent fighting crime," Sullivan said.

Vancouver police Const. Howard Chow said a 23-year-old man, a 29-year-old man, and a 17-year old female all face charges of mischief, break and entry and uttering threats following Tuesday's office raid.

Chow said the younger man also faces an additional charge of assault by trespassing. Chow said all charges will likely be approved later today.

No one was physically hurt in the incident, but Chow said the office receptionist was "visibly shaken."

Premier Campbell says Anti-Poverty Committee members are 'phonies'

Wednesday, May 23 - 11:35:00 AM Jim Goddard

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The Premier is upset three members of the Anti-Poverty Committee used false pretenses to get into the Vancouver cabinet offices yesterday and trashed the reception area. Gordon Campbell isn't worried about his security but does have concerns about his staff members.

Campbell also feels media members who saw the protesters trying to get into the offices at Canada Place should have let the receptionist know what was up. TV cameras were rolling when the APC members entered the office.

Campbell says if the Anti-Poverty Committee thought their violent actions would help them set up a meeting with him, they were mistaken. "I have no intention of ever meeting with them. I don't think there would be any reason to meet with them. I think they're destructive. I think that they're phonies, frankly."

Campbell says he has no problem meeting with legitimate organizations concerned about poverty like the Union Gospel Mission or the Salvation Army.
