The 2008 Toronto Bid

Recommended Posts

well Dawson, since you said Hamilton had its turn on the Commonwealths but lost and Toronto wants it now, it works the same way for Toronto and Vancouver and the Olympics.

good point mr. x!

...not to mention that Toronto lost twice.

The 2014 Commonwealths in Toronto have an excellent chance and it would get rid of Toronto and probably any other Canadian city for Hamilton to bid and win the 2030 centennial Commonwealth Games.

Off topic but since this is a Toronto topic, i heard the feds gave the TTC in Toronto $1 billion?

I loved their concept of the rowing alongside the main stadium right in the centre of things...  I always thought it was a shame they didnt clean up Homebush Bay a bit better and staged the Sydney rowing/canoeing near Olympic Park - even in the harbour proper!

Toronto had a great plan, but Samaranch publically backed Beijing, and the Chinese ran a slick ship for the whole bidding period.  I dont think Toronto's mayors comments about Africa helped much, but by the time he made the comment, Beijing was a sure thing.

i am guessing you will not see this but i was under the impression that rowing would take place in St. Cathrins, Ontario since it is an international recgonized rowing park and has breed come of Canada's best rowers and helped BRock University to multiple national titles. i could be wrong though but since i was there and saw posters saying possible home of the rowing 2008. but ha what do i know

The federal government pledged $333 million over five years, to be matched by the Ontario and Toronto governments.

Global is intellectually bankrupt and has no regard for accurate reporting.

how much in infrastructure dollars has gone to Ontario since 1994?

With the GTA alone, I bet the whole of Ontario is not getting enough infrastructure money.

Clean up Homebush Bay? How? Homebush Bay itself is a National Park. Its a tropical marine reserve that comes out of Sydney Harbour and the Parramatta River. It is saltwater, and completely uncapable of hosting rowing and canoeing, not to mention being an extremely delicate wildlife reserve. There would also be nowhere at all to host spectators, etc...

The Sydney International Regatta Centre at Penrith is a supurb venue.

not to metion that sharks are found quite fequently in that area. also the harbour would be to choppy and tidal.

I was reading a book about the history, development and construction of Toronto's SkyDome.

Did you know that in 1968, Toronto was planning a bid for the 1976 Olympic Games?  The bid never amounted to much, because Montreal (then Canada's largest city) kicked its bid for the XXI Olympiad into high gear and won 2 years later.  But they did have a drawing for the stadium.  If I get my hands on it again, I'll scan and post.

Good points - still I thought it would be good - but obviously unfeasible.  the Penrith centre is great, my only complaint was during the Games it took such a stretch of time to get out there, you really had to dedicate a whole day just to rowing...

Question about Rowing venues-

Do they have to be held in a non salt water body?  When I was in Miami I was reading about this thing they have called the Miami regatta,  and they have it right there on Biscayne Bay, which is a salt water bay.

I'm guessing there are more strict requirements for the Olympics.

Also, can you still hold the rowing events in a salt water body provided that it's calm?

Thanks :)

Interesting bid plan. It clearly offered to be as grand as Sydney, if not grander and certainly larger than Beijing overall.

Only the choice for Football preliminaries (despite it being compact) is disappointing.

Any future bid will certainly be matching or far superior.

The football? Because, although compact, is only Ontario based and the Hamilton and to an extent Ottawa venues aren't so flash (back during the bid).

I suppose a new bid will include perhaps more Canadian cities, maybe even the past Olympic hosts.

Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal making up the outside Ontario hosts, alongside Toronto (BMO FIeld and Olympic Stadium), Hamilton and Ottawa. Seems good to me.

I don't think they want to do that. Eliminate Ottawa and then you have the most compact venue plan that likely will be never matched. Football, equestrian and sailing athletes would be at the main village.

Is there a section missing? I can't seem to find the Paralympic section.

Sure you would. Capture the Olympic spirit with past hosts. Add the capital and Hamilton because it's in Ottawa.

If the Women's WC is all over the country, surely an Olympics Football competition can be.

Difference being the Olympics are concentrated in one city while the Olympic football tournament being all over the country.

Volume 2E after the Olympic Village section - page 17 onwards. The bid book is formatted weirdly so it is a bit back to front in Volume 2.

Thanks do you have the 1996 books as well?
