Now that the final selection is less then 50 days away, Korea's bid committee for the 2014 Winter Olympics is pushing hard to show the International Olympic Committee how pervasive Korea's fervor is.

The PyeongChang 2014 Bid Committee announced Saturday (May 12) that it will strengthen its promotion of the 2014 PyeongChang Winter Olympics in both traditional media and cyberspace. PyeongChang County, Gangwon-do (Province), is currently competing against Salzburg, Austria, and Sochi, Russia, for the rights to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.

A PyeongChang Olympics banner was recently unfurled at Incheon International Airport's departure hall, the committee will also display promotional videos on plasma display panel (PDP) and light-emitting diode (LED) screens throughout the airport. The Seoul Metropolitan Government has also agreed to let the committee put up placards and other promotional material along Sejongno and other major thoroughfare's in the capital.

On Tuesday (May 15), around 1,000 citizens kick off a nationwide mountaineering contest on Mt. Balwangsan in PyeongChang County. The same day, 3,000 Buddhist will gather at Seokwangsa (Temple) in Chuncheon, Gangwon-do, to pray for a successful Olympics bid. Christian groups will also begin a prayer relay, which will stretch until the day of reckoning on July 4

On Wednesday (May 16) Korean designer Andre Kim will hold a fashion show at the Gangneung Indoor Sports Complex with an estimated 4,500 people turning up to show their support for PyeongChang's bid. Back in Seoul's main palace Gyeongbokgung, foreign diplomats will take part in another PyeongChang 2014 promotional event.

The PyeongChang Culture Arts Center will host a concert Saturday (May 19) to encourage support for a successful bid, and the KBS Open Hall will run movies next Wednesday (May 23) with a similar intent.

On June 5, Ahn Chi-hwan and the Happy Concert of Freedom will make an appearance at Seoul Olympic Park, and on June 19, a noted American guitar player George Winston will perform in Chiak Gymnasium in Wonju.

On June 4 -- 30 days until D-day -- another concert will be held at Kangnung National University, followed by a river walk event at Gyeongpodae Lake the following day. A “Hanbadang†event will also be held at the outdoor Gangneung Sports Stadium on June 5.

Meanwhile, Gangwon-do Governor Kim Jin-sun and the four other PyeongChang Bid Committee members will make a special presentation of PyeongChang County overseas and gear up their own promotional activities. The group left on Monday for Bregenz, Austria, and the 70th general meeting of the International Sports Press Association (AIPS). The team will return home a week later on Sunday.

"The PyeongChang Bid Committee will do its utmost to heighten PyeongChang's chances up to July 4 when the International Olympic Committee picks the winner in Guatemala this year," an official involved in PyeongChang's bid said. "We need people's support till the very end."

I was just at Gangneung today! A day late! I really would've liked to have visited that fashion show. But yeah, I'm sure there will be a great turnout. People were really excited about the Olympics when I was there today.
