Calgary 1988

I know about Elizabeth Manley in that situation, C.A.F. If she could have done well in the "figures" section of her overall program, then she would have captured gold in the women's event. Besides, she did win the free skate part of the overall event with, I think, Katarina Witt in second place behind her.

Yes, I know, she did a marvelous "job" in Calgary.

The media was really pushing the fight between the "two Carmens".

It was sad for Canada with the two silver medals in the fight between the "two Carmens" and the "two Brians"

Of course I was glad that Katarina Witt won the Gold medal!  :;):

Unfortunately, Canada won gold medals in the "demonstration" sports rather than the official Olympic sports and events.

As for the "Battle of the Brians", Brian Orser did make slight errors in his free skate program while Brian Boitano had a clean skate. That was the difference between gold and silver in the men's event.

Well, Calgary was the start of Alberto Tomba's fame and fortune. He won 2 gold medals on the slopes in the slalom and the GS. When that happened, he also won a bet to get a new car from his father and started a "cult" of loyal Italian ski fans.

It were also the Olympics of Matty Nykanen (3 golds in ski jumping) and Yvonne van Gennip (3 golds in speed skating)

Calgary '88 were actually the first Winter Games which lasted 16 days and where speed skating was held indoor. And the Alpine Super G and Alpine Combined were added to the Olympic Program, so you could describe those Olympics as a beginning of a new era. :)

I think Calgary's Olympic Torch Relay is the longest in modern Olympic history, covering most of Canada in 88 days. Some may boast that the Calgary Tower holds the highest, but unofficial, Olympic cauldron in Olympic history, too.

Yes, krow. However, it was dicey at times for them whether to compete in the Olympic Winter Games after 1994 in Lillehammer or not in the past. I guess that they managed to hold on somehow and did compete in Nagano in 1998.

The Swiss did very well in the Calgary Games. Overall, the Olympic team finished in 3rd. spot on the medals tally. However, did they start to falter in subsequent OWG after Calgary?

The Olympic Oval in CALGARY was the reason of 8 new World Records and 10 new Olympic Records in Speed Skating!

Yep, the Calgary Olympic Oval was the fastest speed skating track in the world for many years, but they have been surpassed by the Utah Olympic Oval in Salt Lake City.

The UOO is having most of the world records by now. Only one WR remained in Calgary: the WR on the ladies 500 meters set by Canada's Catriona Lemay - Doan.

Anyway, check out http://www.skatebase.com/ for more info on speed skating tracks, world records etc.

On the local news today: Calgary Olympic Torch in Kananaskis Country stolen from display case!! Unfortunately, I cannot post the story by linking it here due to its very long URL. You will have to see it from this site:

It seems that Calgary 1988 is the only institution that has contributed to the main Olympic Museum, in Lausanne, Switzerland, in behalf of all of Canada. See the web page that lists all the corporate donors, institutions and individuals, who made the Olympic Museum possible below:

For British people, Calgary 1988 was really about 1 person- "Eddie the Eagle" Edwards. He was not very good, and I think he finished 77th in his event

But for some reason the British media were crazy about him, I was only 7 when the games took place, but I remember newspaper headlines like "the eagle has landed." Quite silly really for someone who did quite badly.

I really love calgary- it has a superb skyline for a city of it's size. The buildings are not that tall (compared to toronto's downtown towers), but there is very good depth/ density. I think Calgary's tallest is Petro canada Tower at 689ft ???

Any calgary people out there know if that's right??

Petro Canada One is the tallest (53 floors).  It has a shorter sister, Petro Canada Two (33 floors).  The Bankers Hall twins are next at 50 floors each (197 m).  Bankers Hall is my favorite Calgary office complex - has that very "Canadian" look like a modern version of the Chateau Frontenac, Royal York or Hotel Vancouver.

You got it right on, people! Since I am the only one, I think, from the Calgary area in these forums, I'm glad that Calgary is "well-known" after the 1988 Winter Olympics was completed.

As such, Vancouver wants to do as better or exceed Calgary in this manner.

Wow SuitUSir, I was 7 too when the Calgary WOGs were on. They were the first Winter Games that I ever really saw. I was too young when Sarajevo was on and I think anyway that we in Australia didn't see any footage from Sarajevo until 6 months after when it was winter here and even then it was probably only 30 minutes all about Torvill and Dean and no one else.

I remember loving watching the Nordic Ski Jumping, the Finn Matti Nykanen in particular was a big hero of mine (Useless piece of trivia: he is now destitute and broke after a failed career as a porn star) and I also remember marvelling at the Saddledome with its strange and curvy roof and the Calgary Tower which looked like a giant Olympic torch in the background when a long shot of the Calgary panorama was on the screen. And the JAMAICANS in the bob. WOW. And I also remember wondering what the big fuss was all about with Eddie the Eagle. A great Winter Games, Calgary 1988 were.

I was in Calgary earlier this month, and I noticed they still have signs on the outskirts of the city with "CALGARY - HOST CITY 1988 WINTER OLYMPICS" with a small image of the mascots.

They should keep them up though.

Yeah. I heard that Vancouver's City Hall is going to add "XXI Olympic Winter Games 2010 Host City" signs with the 10 existing "Vancouver Welcomes You" signs in the cities major entrance roads.

Those entrance signs to Calgary will stick around for a while longer.

As for Vancouver, I bet that the city hall there can't wait for an Olympic flag to be hung inside to remind officials there on what is coming to the city in 2010.
