Rei
Rei, it is great that you mentioned about him here. Yesterday, Alberto 'La Bomba' Tomba celebrated his 40th birthday. In fact, the IOC has made an article about him.Link: IOC: Alberto Tomba Or The Art Of The Zigzag By the way, I didn't know he wanted to try his hand as an actor and has launched his own perfume called Indescente with Lancaster. about 10 years ago he played in a TV movie "Alex, l'ariete" (=Alex, the Ram).. TERRIBLE! recently he was victim of a TV show in Italy "Scerzi a parte" (=Joking aside) a sort of parody which plays a joke to vips.. they offered him to be the sponsorman for a mortician firm (TOMBA in italian means GRAVE) I prefer remember him as a sportmen.. period. btw thanks guardian to revocate him here and sorry for the OT
Guardian
She may be in hiatus for now, but she was named the winner of the Lou Marsh award. The Lou Marsh award is one that is given by a panel of Canadian sports editors and broadcasters and the Toronto Star newspaper for the most outstanding Canadian athlete of the year.Link: CBC: Klassen Wins Lou Marsh Award However, it seems not everyone is happy with it. In fact, there seems to be some dissent that "an amateur athlete should NOT get such an award." This is the case of some supporters that have been saying that STEVE NASH, of the NBA's Phoenix Suns, should have beaten Klassen for the honor because he became a two-time-in-row NBA's MVP Player of the Year Award. What do you guys think? Link: CBC Sports Argument Page: Cindy Klassen vs. Steve Nash No surprise. When you have the overall Canadian athlete of the year award under your name, it could be applied again when it comes to gender. Again, Cindy Klassen gets another Canadian athletic award. Guardian
That's okay, Rei. Anyway, remember the post I made in this topic about the so-called new snowboard halfpipe in Calgary that will be a testing one for what Vancouver 2010 will build for those upcoming Winter Olympics? Ironically enough, this will be the first time I know of that Calgary will host a World Cup in the halfpipe event at the Canada Olympic Park. Guardian
LA84, guess what? If you can find a way to get to watch a NHL game between Calgary and Vancouver tomorrow, then you are in for a real treat! What is this "treat" I am trying to say here? At Calgary 1988, some of us "old-timers" witnessed and/or heard the official songs of the Olympic Games at the opening ceremony. One, for the first time in Olympic Winter Games history, the Olympic Anthem was sung in Greek then. Second, and most of all, the Canadian national anthem was NOT sung in English or French. It was sung in the First Nations' CREE language! Yes, tomorrow's NHL game in Calgary will have the repeat of that 1988 Olympic Winter Games opening ceremony golden moment, when the Canadian national anthem will be sung by an teenage girl of Cree descent, from Edmonton, at the Pengrowth Saddledome. For those who are used to hearing national anthems in their own respective official languages around the world, this experience will be unique for all to hear. I hate to correct a Canadian about their own Olympics but you are half right. The anthem was indeed sang by an indian in his native language acalpelo. And this is how sick I am - I remember his name! I thought he was southern shushoni (sp?) but you may be right and maybe he was Cree. But anyhow he did sing the anthem through. Then it was followed by I believe by the Calgary Boys Choir who sang Oh! Canada in a jazzy beat, alternating between English and French in their rendition. Nevertheless the game today will certainly give a taste of Calgary '88 and I will try and tune in - just to see that portion at least.

Guardian
Later on today, one of the former 1988 Winter Olympics venues could have a bleak future. It is no other than the Pengrowth Saddledome at Stampede Park. When it was called the "Olympic Saddledome" during those Games, it was considered one of the landmarks of the city. Even after those Games were over, it was seen as such up to now. But, the Calgary Flames NHL team is now "demanding" to have a new ice arena because it "outgrew it." However, there are divisions about what is the next course of action will be. A report about this issue could determine the Saddledome's fate. Guardian
Today is the 19th anniversary of the XV Olympic Winter Games. I cannot believe I am this old now. With Canada now setting itself for another shot of hosting it again, it will be a much different atmosphere than what occurred here. So much has occurred here and the surrounding areas since those Games was over, with hosting of so many winter sporting events up to now and still going stronger overall. Guardian
I saw the new half pipe being built this summer. Have they got that zip-line ride from the 90 meter ski jump going yet? I also noticed they took a bunch of the grandstands out at the 90 meter ski jump. Are they replacing them or taking them out for good? Yes, I believe that they do have that zip-line going right now. As for the grandstands, I think they will be taken out for good for two reasons. One, the ski-jumps are outdated. The ones going to be built for Vancouver 2010 will be larger than those ones, per new and updated Olympic standards. Second, the position of those jumps does not favor the skiers too much because of fierce Chinook crosswinds from the west. Whoever was the brainiac that decided to have them face NORTH is beyond me, especially when those winds can get very strong quickly. I hope those VANOC people has learned from the Calgary experience here. Besides, there is already a long-term plan underway to reconfigure the entire Canada Olympic Park site for future and retail uses. Of course, there will be the NIMBYs that will voice their concerns about the plans.

According to their main source, the Big Four Building (which housed the media center for Calgary 1988) could be torn down and make way for this possible bigger Saddledome while KEEPING THE OLD ONE. There is no rendering about it yet because I don't think any plans has been set up and the Stampede Grounds itself is going to go through a major transformation that will last until well into the next decade, just like the Canada Olympic Park complex. The price tags here are going to get steep, if the plans go awry in any way.

Guardian
Okay. How popular is the Calgary 1988 theme song is in the world right now? You won't believe this, but I ran into this clip in YouTube by accident. It is part ONE of FOUR of a musical attraction at Tokyo Disneyland back in 2004. It was called "That's Disneytainment." Not to get off-topic here, but the fourth and last part has Mickey Mouse playing the drums (for real). Link: YouTube: Part 1 of 4 of "That's Disneytainment" At Tokyo Disneyland (May 2004) By the way, the song starts at the 7:23 mark and lasts until the 8:38 mark. I have never thought of Walt Disney using the Calgary 1988 theme music in this capacity. Makes me wonder if other entities have used this song lately. P.S.: Here are the lyrics of that song, should you want to see it. "CAN'T YOU FEEL IT?" (vocal version of "Winter Games", performed on TV for the Calgary Winter Games Opening Ceremony) (David Foster - Tony Banks) Now the moment we've waited for is coming true And our hopes and our dream will sone shining through And the feeling we know is here to stay And whatever may come, we'll see it through remembering today. Can't you feel it? The spirit surrounds you! Don't you feel it? And now that it's found in you Won't you feel it? The feelin's everywhere Can't you feel it here... We've all answered the call to come together here And the moment of truth we know is coming near And whatever the fates decide We'll all play our parts here side by side And the Calgary spirit will keep us all together through the years. Can't you feel it? The spirit surrounds you! Don't you feel it? And now that it's found in you Won't you feel it? The feelin's everywhere Can't you feel it here... Now the trumpets have sounded, and the drums are still And you've vowed that you'll do your best, and we know you will We're not here just to cheer for fame But for honor and truth, that's why we came It's not wheter you win what counts, but only how you play the game. Can't you feel it? The spirit surrounds you! Don't you feel it? And now that it's found in you Won't you feel it? The feelin's everywhere Won't you feel it... Can't you feel it... Don't you feel it... Here....................
Guardian
With some of us having varied opinions about the Calgary 1988 Olympic Winter Games theme song [Can't You Feel It? (vocal) and Winter Games (instrumental)] over the years, the fate of the "Welcome To Calgary" signs has now been sealed. If you do not know what I am talking about, then here it is. When a tourist enters the city, whether by the airport or by car/bus coach, one would see a huge blue welcome sign at the city's limits with the Calgary 1988 Winter Olympics mascots on it. They are Hidy and Howdy: the polar bears. And, of course, it mentions about the city being the host of the XV Olympic Winter Games. Now that it has been over 19 years since the event was over, the use of these signs has now become outdated. Some have said that it was about time that they are to be replaced by more "modern ones" to reflect Calgary's place in the world. What would replace them? It is unknown at this time. But, it seems that Frank King, the president of the former OCO'88 (the Calgary 1988 Olympic organizing committee), does not like the idea and wants them to stay where they are. I guess there will be a minority of Calgarians who feel that way. Link 1: Global TV Calgary: Howdy Heave-Ho (Olympic Mascots May Finally Be Turfed From 'Welcome To Calgary' Signs) Link 2: Calgary Herald: What Calgarians Think (About Getting Rid Of Howdy And Hidy) On another, but off-topic front, it seems that there was some behind-the-scenes moves on the high-speed train front for the Calgary-Edmonton corridor. The story is still in the works because there will be a "final report" later in the summer whether it will have the go-ahead. And, on top of it, this news comes at the time, when the Alberta government is handing down its first provincial budget under Ed Stelmach's leadership. Of course, it will be another budget surplus for a province that has "no debt left to service." But, it will be interesting on how both news will go with Albertans specifically and with Canadians in general. Link: CTV Calgary: Land Purchased For High-Speed Train As for the trains for this service, there are 4 different possibilities. They range from diesel trains on conventional track to the Japanese ones. Plus, in between, they could be made by Bombardier or the province could end up having the French TGV ones. In any case, if the plan does get the go-ahead, it could be around the year 2013 that the corridor will have this service.
Guardian
Well, it has been decided that the present "Welcome To Calgary" signs are to be retired. It is logical that both the English and French translations of it will be placed inside the Canada Olympic Park complex.
