Here's the news on newspaper Milenio about the meeting between the Mayor of Monterrey, Alberto Madero and Felipe Muñoz, President of the Mexican Olympic Com.

They also announce the aproval of the Municipality of Santiago at the south of the city of Monterrey, to be taken into consideration as part of the project where the sports of Rowing, Canoe, Triathlon and possible Football among others will take place.

Here's the link to the news:

That would be interesting, if I start hearing Latin in the Olympic Games.

Anyway, I wonder if Mexico's richest man, which he is the THIRD richest man in the world, would support in any capacity for a possible Mexican bid for the 2016 Olympic Games?

How do you make these links, Guard? For that matter, you could go down the list and ask if Gates, Buffet, the Indians, the Russians, etc., will support their country's Olympic bids. I am sure some will; and some won't.

Monterrey has not the best of relations with Mr. Carlos Slim. There are 2 major industrial groups in the country, the Mexico City's Group grouping Telmex (phone company), Telcel (cell phone), Modelo Beer Company, Televisa, TV Azteca (last both TV networks) among others, and then there's the Monterrey Industrial Group with companies such as Cemex (cement), FEMSA (Beer company), Axtel (phone company), Hylsa (Steel), Alfa (chemicals and industrial), Vitro (glass company), among others.

None of these groups share with one another, and the struggle on both is not new. I would relly more on having the support of the likes of Zambrano, Garza, Sada, Bremen among others, all from the Monterrey group rather then the Slim's club.

Another University Facility, this is the new Gym of the Universidad Regiomontana (UR).

urgymzl2.jpg

The UR is building a new Campus in dowtown Monterrey. Is one of the top 3 Private Universities in the city.

The new Gym is planned to be finished by the year 2008. I do not know the capacity, but they say it will be about the size of the ITESM Gym, so I would say a capcity around 4,000 spectators.

The UR Gym is planned to host the Badminton Events, if the city wins the 2016 Olympic Games.

Construction Updates of the UANL Aquatic Center

This is the New Aquatic Center being built and planned to be finished this year.

img8544iz7.jpg

I can't find any renders of this. But there seems like 2 huge archs will support the entire roof.

Should Monterrey win the 2016 Olympics this will be the site of Waterpolo and Syncronized swimming Preliminaries.

Finals as well as the Diving event and Swimming, will take place in the yet new Aquatic Center of the ITESM University. The most important Private University in Latin America.

The ITESM Aquatic Center will be built next to he ITESM Stadium, planned to host the Athletics event as well as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. The constructions of the ITESM Aquatic Center will begin this year.

ITESM Stadium remodelation will include some major transformations, upgrading capacity to 80,000 spectators and a proper athetlic track. No plans have been announced for this yet.

First Render of the Olympic Village

rendervillaolimpicapb1.jpg

This is a very early render of the plan of the Olympic Village planned for Monterrey 2016. The project is located next to Constitucion Avenue, one of the arteries of the city.

Right now the land is used for some very old department buildings (actually one of the first ever built in the city). The Government of the State of Nuevo Leon plans to integrate this whole area into their Santa Lucia project, which connects the Macro Plaza (the second largest public square in the world) with the Santa Lucia River, with the Old Square (home of museums, art galleries and over 100 restaurants, cafes, bars and discos) with the Fundidora Park (one of 3 clusters planned on the Monterrey 2016 project). The only land missing to include in this major urban plan is the land of the Condominios Constitución. So, the Monterrey 2016 tem came up with the idea of building their Olympic Village in this land. After the Olympics the buildings will be used to replace the old Condominios Constitucion buildings.

The Monterrey Olympic Village is planned for 17,000 athletes.

The Olympic Village is on walking distance to downtown Monterrey and the Fundidora Park. The Fundidora Park will host the Judo, Taekwondo, Fencing, Wrestling, Weightlifting, Basketball, Gymnastics , and Beach Volleyball events, as well as the IPC Center.

The travel time between the Olympic Village and the ITESM Campus, hosting the Press Village, Olympic Stadium, Swimming events, and Rhytmic Gymnastics is only 5 minutes by car.

This is all very impressive; But how can one justify the use of millions of dollars to throw a 2 week party, when so many Mexicans lack proper schools, jobs, opportunities, etc....

I think those millions will be well spent since they will serve to provide those mexicans a chance of a job. Let's not forget that all this projects I mentioned before are already planned for the city, despite winning of not the 2016 Olympics, except for the Olympic Village, but there is still the need to improve that area of the city, so if this is not it, another project will come, I rather see the Olympic Village.

Monterrey Arena

This is the venue chosen by the Monterrey 2016 team to host the Basketball Finals and Gymnastics, if Monterrey wins the right to host the Olympics.

It is located inside the Fundidora Park and has a capacity of 17,000 spectators.

arenaokpf9.jpg

arenaneweo4.jpg

It was built in the year 2004. It already hosted major sport events such as the 2004 World Karate Championships.

  • 4 weeks later...

Very, impressive venues, BUT we must all agree on this:

Of all the potetinal REAL bids for 2016(Chicago, LA, Tokyo, ROME, Prague etc.), this money needs to be spent elsewhere in Monterrey and Mexico, than wasted on a 2 week sports party!!

2 week sports party, weel i think is more than that, its a way to introduce Monterrey to the world, to show what Mexico can do.

Besides will bring a lot of invesment and money to the city. It not the olympics itself, its what they make for the city, a lot of infrastructure will be upgraded and the city would be more recognized.

My render I created a while back of the upgrade Estadio Technologica

new1a.jpg

new2A.jpg

new3a.jpg

new4a.jpg

Project Summary

Estadio Technologico

Current Capacity: 38,000

Olympic Games Capacity: 72,000

Post Games Capacity: 60,000

Upgrade:

*Refurbishment of existing first tier including additional capacity to 30,000

*Removal of second tier over the west side of stadium

*Construction of semi-permanent stadium podium

*Construction of second tier (capacity 42,000) including private suites and media facilities

*Construction of stadium facade

*Construction of roof membrane

Cost: $300 million (US) (est. 2007)

The upper tier of the existing stadium will be removed and extensive upgrading will take place in and around the first tier to increase its capacity to 30,000.

The new design takes into account the space and budget constraints which are present. The outer stadium membrane area will be reduced to reduce the cost, and since the stadium already exists I don't foresee any need for high quality ETFE mebrane to reduce noise pollution, the stadium roof and concourse should be more than adequate and would reduce noise pollution to levels below current levels.. The beams of the facade are angle inwards towards the stadium bowl due to the space constraints surrounding the stadium. It might be wise to use temporary seating for the second tier and replace it with offices/connvention space/entertainment areas after the games.

A similar material to that of the Sydney Olympic Stadium roof will be used. The only difference will be that this roof material will allow more light into the stadium. This will also reduce shadows on the track.

I'm not sure about the stadium podium as of yet but it will really depend on what sort of budget the city or national gvt. makes available.

As for construction, the stadium bowl can be constructed at the same time as the roof and stadium podium. The beams forming the stadium facade will be lifted into place, while the roof will be connected to the beams.

Construction time of 3 years should be more than enough.

As far as I understand, the money spent on the 2 week party on the Monterrey 2016, will come directly of the money generated from organizing the event (ticket sales, sponsorships, endorsements, venue sells after the games, loteries, coin and stamps programs, mexican TV Rights, etc.) No public or Government money will be used on this.

With this in mind, how should we not allow the 2 week party to come to Monterrey? Where's the waste? If there's no 2 week party, there will be no money to finance it.

Lots of politicians in Mexico wondered the same thing and tried to frustrate Monterrey's intentions with the same old arguments: why should we spend money on the olympics? we should use the money for something else, use it in other needed areas of the country, etc. And I just love the way the Monterrey 2016 team responded on a radio interview they said: what money? if we do not win the event, how could we use the money from ticket sales in the other needed areas of Mexico? how could we launch a coin an stamp program without even bidding? We are considering on organzing a self financed event, therefore, it is impossible to use that money for something else, but, it will mean a financial detonator, for the entire economy of the country.

This can be said of ANY city in the world. I'm sure there are plenty in the U.K. that are saying that the massive amounts of money that are being poured into London's Olympics "needs to be spent elsewhere in London and the U.K., than 'wasted' on a 2-week sports party!!"

This is not the point!!!

When you have a governnment that actively encourages its citizens to move to another country for a better life(ala, "el Presidente Vicente Foxe". el GRAN PERDADOR MEXICANO"-Great Mexican LOSER!!). perhaps its ciizens should reevaluate their priorities, on how their government spents its money!, 2 week sports parties that in the long run will have little impact on the average 'joe", or spend the money on education, health etc.?

TOKYO, ROME, MADRID, can afford to throw this party, Mexico can't!!

BOTTOM LINE:

CHICAGO will get the USOC nod this Saturday and will go on tho win hands down in 2009!!!

MONTERREY, likley won't even bid for 2016 and if they did, won't get shortlisted!

These very nice depictions of sports facilities for Monterrey 2016 will never get past these computer images , not in our lifetimes at least!
