Olympic Stadium: Beijing National Stadium

Every time I see those pictures from the inside I think they are of Montreal's Olympic Stadium.

I am sorry but IMHO that is just about the ugliest stadium ever built specifically for an Olympics. Actually Atlanta's was probably uglier but this one certainly has nothing over Munich, Montreal or even for that matter Helsinki's

whatever they are i gotta say they look pretty damn smart, if they dont put them in then the day shots are going to look pretty uneventfull with a grey steel hulk of a stadium sitting on a probably plain uninspiring grey concrete concourse

Actually, judging by this picture, Beijing has either begun planting the park's foliage, or it's been there for awhile now:

And to answer your question about the designs on the ground, I'm pretty sure they're suppose to represent the Chinese zodiac. You can clearly see a dog in that rendering.

It shouldn't be surprising that these designs won't become reality; renderings and concept art rarely match the real thing. Just look at renderings of the Water Cube's inside and what's actually in there.

It looks quite unfinished. Per the renderings, the whole outer membrane should be covering the nest grid. It's almost the end of March; and they are supposed to deliver the stadium to BOCOG.

And I understand the reason for NOT plugging up the rest of the grid on the sides -- for a cross vent for breezes (which I don't think was considered in the design :o ). Now, in this plain of Beijing, are there even summer breezes? :o

I think that the renderings rather look as if the architects originally hadn't a membrane in mind at all. The grid looks pretty naked, if you ask me:

And yes, I think it's wise that they only covered the roof with the membrane. That stadiums needs a breeze of fresh air, just like the whole country (yep, I'm on full "political mode" currently).

Considering the sandstorms that supposedly plague Beijing every so often, I'm not sure if they would want natural ventilation.

The sandstorms are usually a problem in spring only -- so the Games will be probably not harmed by them at all.

Some new pics of the Nest':

^They're actually light fixtures; so no, it hasn't learned to lay eggs and reproduce, yet.

More pics showing some foilage:

^I can finally make out an Olympic Park there, not a construction site.

And finally, the track inside the stadium has begun to be installed:

Is the troubled bird finding it difficult to nest? The nest and watercube are great innovations in the history of the Olympics. They have not only differentiate themselves from Athen's but usher in a new thoughts and feelings about Olympic, of which are very interesting parts of the China host.

Heave-huh! Almost finished! Now, cover it with the opening ceremony stage! Or later if there's a test event!
