PyeongChang, Korea's bid city for the 2014 Winter Olympics, has completed its preparations for receiving an evaluation team from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Monday (Feb. 12), the PyeongChang Bid Committee said.

A 16-member delegation from the IOC arrived in Seoul on Sunday and is due to travel to PyeongChang on Tuesday afternoon, committee officials said. The on-site examination will take place Wednesday through Friday.

PyeongChang was chosen as one of the three official candidate cities by the IOC executive board last year from seven applicant cities, which also included Jaca of Spain, Almaty of Kazakhstan, Sofia of Bulgaria and Borjomi of Georgia.

Of the three finalists, PyeongChang is the first to be evaluated. Sochi of Russia is to be evaluated from Feb. 20-23, and Salzburg of Austria will be examined March 14-17.

"We have practiced 16 times in preparation for the evaluation," said Kim Man-ki, a spokesman for the committee.

Along with PyeongChang, two nearby Gangwon Province cities, Gangneung and Jeongsun, have also finished their preparations for the IOC evaluation and hope to be designated as hosts of events such as skiing, skeleton and ice hockey.

"A total of 290 officials rehearsed their presentations several times and prepared answers to likely questions from the delegation members," the spokesman said.

On arriving in Gangneung, the IOC delegation will be welcomed by 10 Korean traditional music groups, which will play Korean folk songs and traditional music.

On the road entering the city of PyeongChang, the delegation will be welcomed by 2,014 supporters who will hold candles symbolizing the "Hope of 2014."

The delegation is scheduled to hold a press conference at a Seoul hotel on Saturday. Evaluation results will be submitted to IOC members by July 4, and the site of the 2014 Winter Olympiad will be determined by secret vote in Guatemala also in July.
