Durban Sandshark Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 According to Wikipedia's listing of the Playstation 3 games, SEGA's Beijing 2008 is slated to be released in the first quarter of 2008 in Europe and in 2008's third quarter in North America. Take it with a grain of salt since video game release dates are always subject to change. Frankly I think Q1 is a little too soon for Europe. Couple of other wishes pertaining to Beijing 2008 since my original roster: --play as or compete against some of the legendary Olympic athletes or teams --adjust the real-time weather and temperature conditions for the outdoor events (like making it rain during the steeplechase rounds at Beijing's Birdnest) more will come later...
Durban Sandshark Posted May 31, 2007 Report Posted May 31, 2007 Another wish and this is inspired by what I just read online from the Denver Post: have some Internet connections toward athletes' injuries and current Olympic news and stats into the Beijing 2008 game
DesmondChan Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 Please go for this link for more details: http://psp.ign.com/objects/787/787984.html "The Official Video Game of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, this multi-console game features a wide variety of Olympic sports, such as aquatics (diving and swimming), archery, baseball, basketball, boxing, canoe/kayak, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football (soccer), gymnastics, handball, field hockey, Judo, modern pentathlon, rowing, sailing, shooting, softball, table tennis, Taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, volleyball, weightlifting, and wrestling." "This game has been signed as the official game of the 2008 Olympic Games, and will be released for multiple platforms. This game platform is a likely destination for Beijing 2008, but it has not yet been confirmed which systems this title will be released on."
dave199 Posted June 12, 2007 Report Posted June 12, 2007 What I would like to see is a brand new interface to these games. It gets so boring each time because the games all are the same and stale. Why can't they create an interface where you choose your country, and the sports you'd like to concentrate on. After that, you start off in the pre-Olympic phase, training, competing in smaller meets, Nationals, and other international competitions to eventually qualify yourself a spot in the Olympics. You should have the options of gaining points throughout this phase, and then cash these points in to build up your athletes strengths, improve their equipment, get the best possible nutritionists and sports fitness doctors, etc. Then you finally make it into the Olympics, you should have the option to compete in the various sports you choose to train and qualify for in the beginning of the game. Overall, I just want it to be a much more competitive game where your trying to help your country make it atop the medal standings.

Durban Sandshark Posted June 13, 2007 Report Posted June 13, 2007 I certainly second that! This should apply to team sports for the most part too. Hope the good people at SEGA are certainly listening to us.
Tanaka_Ray Posted June 15, 2007 Report Posted June 15, 2007 In Sydney 2000 PC's games, we must compete in the regional competition first before we can enter the olympic right ?
Durban Sandshark Posted June 20, 2007 Report Posted June 20, 2007 Lately I noticed in all of the Olympic team sports there will be Olympic qualifications. I sincerely hope those will be included along with the regular qualifications (regional and world ones) in the Beijing 2008 video game. Can you imagine a game like this at least breaking the 100GB barrier for the PS3? I can with all of the sports and events involved. Wonder how the Wii version be like? Here's a really cool idea: I just watched a video tutorial from EA Sports upcoming NCAA College Football 2008, and I thought to myself this will work great for Beijing 2008. Say, you're repping for South Africa, and want to see and reminsince the glory and add on to that. There should be a medal room that you can fill up and check out the medal tally for South Africa while you assemble your team's athletes that qualified for Beijing (more on that some other time). Wanna relive the thrilling men's upset world record breaking 4x100 swim relay? Or that first ever Olympic basketball win for South Africa, even if it's in classification? You can do that with video and photo highlight feature. View your fave moments at anytime, anyplay, and save up to at least five in the instant replay mode. Photos can capture the moments and take photos from videos while in current game and done manually. All will be uploaded on the web from game highlights. Supersim can advance to where you skip, watch the progress, or play out and jump back in at any moment.

These games are NOT big sellers and date really quickly. I'd really be surprised if we see much beyond the traditional button mashing in the general multi-platform "official" game. I'd love to be proven wrong, but I really doubt it. Mario and Sonic on Wii will probably be more innovative, but I don't think it will be anything with much depth _ probably something somilar to Wii Sports.

Maybe so, Sir Roltel, there may not be much depth to it eventually. That said, there's got to be several reasons why SEGA announced their plans to make the Beijing 2008 video game when they did last year; one of which is not ending up like those movie tie-in video games, many of which suck becuase not enough time occured to properly develop them. That way, time constraints won't be of as an issue with that, and I think that is one thing that hampers past Olympic video games. We know the next summer Olympics is a few years time, so why not get the basics down and gameplay first at this stage. Another is with all of those events to be in this game. The production team behind this surely want to do this right, and I think they've learned from past titles on how to improve. Plus, they have the Blu-ray thing going for them to advance their scope. I'm sure they studied and paid attention to what other sports video titles got going on and what they can apply to them (like from EA Sports, and 2K Sports). Hopefully, they are getting wishes from us, emails, and other outlets and message boards where Olympic video game discussions take place. The game can't be any worse than what we've seen in the past, can it? We're likely to spot some screenshots sometime next year. Hopefully, the European release will get delayed to ensure a more worldwide release. Did I mention medal ceremonies as part of the video and photo highlight feature?
Durban Sandshark Posted June 26, 2007 Report Posted June 26, 2007 Something else: actually being a game that comes out every four years in the summer may serve as an advantage because they would time to study and brainstorm over what to do with the technological advances. There comes a point when the button mashing has to stop and get more innovative. It will have more time to be proven wrong. With all of the features out there in sports games, it wouldn't hurt to learn from and adopt them for their own. It's got to have a longer playing life than in the past up until London, and maybe beyond in the case of baseball and softball (surely the production team realizes this). More wishes will come from me later.

The thing is, the Olympic franchise games don't have a long shelf-life. Titlees like the Halos, the GTAs, Call of Duty, resistance etc sell solidly over a long period and thus justify the millions of dollars of ndevelopment moneyb that go into such productions these days. The various Olympic titles, like movie tie-ins, sell steadily only for a few months before and after the events and then slowly but surely make their way into the bargain and second hand bins until the next Olympic cycle crops up again. Okay _ you could argue chicken and egg _ if the Olympic titles were better they'd have a longer shelf life and the developers would be encouraged to spend mopre money on them. But you'd need someone first to take the risk and produce a good one to show that the demand is there.
Durban Sandshark Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 Some more news have appeared regarding the forthcoming Mario and Sonic At the Olympic Games following E3: --game is due to released in Europe in October, North America in November, and Japan during the Holiday season --gameplay is still unknown at this point --actual venues for Beijing will be used but will get stylized to suit the art styles of the Mario and Sega characters --track and field is confirmed with possibly swimming, fencing, judo, and table tennis added --non-playable characters for the events will act as refs for certain events Screenshots can be clicked here. Here's the trailer: Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games E3 2007 Trailer. Looks like a lot of fun. Still awaiting more details on the more realistic version being made.
Durban Sandshark Posted October 9, 2007 Report Posted October 9, 2007 Been away from this in a while. There is an official Beijing 2008 video game website. But there is very little to see for now. I like to see some sort of management mode to oversee your nation's Olympic team. If a team did not qualify for Beijing in a team sport like France unfortunately did in both women's and men's basketball in real life, you could make up for that in the virtual realm. Hopefully with continental qualifiers or something along those lines. Surely I'll think of more very soon.
Guardian Posted November 17, 2007 Report Posted November 17, 2007 Went to a specialized electronics store near my home and the Beijing 2008 video game for Wii has already come out. Believe it or not, it is a Mario versus Sonic one.

Tanaka_Ray Posted November 17, 2007 Report Posted November 17, 2007 I think there is 2 kind official games for beijing 2008, the 1st is sonic vs mario and the second is like athens 2004 and other olympic games

mr.x Posted November 18, 2007 Report Posted November 18, 2007 how about a Tiananmen square protest tank driving level?
Durban Sandshark Posted January 12, 2008 Report Posted January 12, 2008 Everybody, we finally now have at last the long-awaited screenshots of the Beijing 2008 Olympic video game! These are from the XBOX360 console at Gamespot. Beijing 2008 Video Game 1st Screenshots
Durban Sandshark Posted January 16, 2008 Report Posted January 16, 2008 I need to point some things about the 2008 video game that needs to be uttered for now: --you can compete in 35 events (so that means players can play every sport in the Games, and hopefully every discipline) --online multiplayer mode --released on PS3, XBOX360, and PC (a next-gen exclusive because it is so dense) --developed by Eurocom Entertainment Software but Sega is the publisher Eurocom's Beijing 2008 Official Olympic Video Game Press Release A mobile (or cell as we Yanks and Canadians say) phone version game is in the works
Sir Rols Posted January 16, 2008 Report Posted January 16, 2008 --released on PS3, XBOX360, and PC (a next-gen exclusive because it is so dense) So just the next gen consoles and PC. That means Wii owners have to be content with Mario and Sonic. Pity, I thought it was a flawed execution. I would have preferred a Nintendo developed version (a la Wii sports) making use of the Miis, rather than competiting with the likes of Pribness Peach et al in the events. Still, yes, I know I'm a bit of a cyncical grump when it comes to these Olympic console games. But I've never seen any executed well, and i don't think there's a big enough market for them as incentive to do them well.
james Posted January 16, 2008 Report Posted January 16, 2008 We believe you as the topic has been discussed here for months... At the age of five I fist played the game Sonic the hedgehoger on the Sega master system II then marion wasn't that fun. On the contrary, both are games of picking something. It would be better if they really add something to them from the Olympic games.
Durban Sandshark Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 So just the next gen consoles and PC. That means Wii owners have to be content with Mario and Sonic. Pity, I thought it was a flawed execution. I would have preferred a Nintendo developed version (a la Wii sports) making use of the Miis, rather than competiting with the likes of Pribness Peach et al in the events. Getting Nintendo involved in this for the Wii would mean cutting some corners or modifiying to accomodate since that console lacks that next-gen DVD hookup. I theorize the IOC and/or Sega/Eurocom want all of the Olympic sports in with both genders involved for it (where applicable) or not at all--it'll be more like the Athens game. So that was why it went to PS3 and XBOX360. Don't forget the Athens 2004 version was only a PS2 affair on standard DVD, solely made by Sony's 989 Sports. Nintendo's version might been fun as a Wii game, but it would not be chock-a-bloc. Since both next-gen consoles have the more than adequate data space for this project. Most sports games use up to 3GB on DVD with a 8.5 GB capacity. Both Blu and HD-DVD knock that out of the park. I wouldn't be surprised, with the next gen format war being over now that Blu-Ray is going to win thanks to Warner going exclsively Blu after May 31st, Beijing 2008: The Video Game will be among the last video games released under the HD-DVD format. Thankfully with 32 events in the Olympics (all of them in the Beijing progam, the press release says 35 events but unless track and field are made separate, that doesn't sound right), I must reiterate the need for at least 50GB Blu-Ray DVD capacity with this. Given some qaulification tournaments will be on very close to Beijing and the game is set for a Q3 release here in North America, I'm really curious as to see if qualification tournaments for team sports will make it onto it. With a lot more countries. They all should, both individual and team sports, even the continental ones. And would the official qualification venues be in it too? Can you adjust the draws? Can you replace the nations in favor of the ones you want in events? Will there be classification rounds with heats, quarterfinals, and semis? It should not cheat on it all like all of the disciplines in track and field, swimming, boxing, wrestling, shooting, judo, archery, gymnastics, weightlifting, and the like. It should also, for outdoor events like track, adjust the weather. To be continued...
Fox334 Posted January 18, 2008 Report Posted January 18, 2008 By the way, they never was a single video game that was released on HD DVD, at least not from my knowledge (and I know quite a bit when it commes to video-games). The XBOX 360 dosen't have a standart HD DVD drive, and the add-on drive can only be used to watch movies. Oh, and virtually every seventh-gen multi-platform games, even the PS3 versions, use DVD-9 (it is, after all, the most that a XBOX 360 can handle). Oh, there are 302 events at the Summer Olympics, not 32 (they are 32 disciplines, thought), so when they say 35 events, that means the 100m and the 200m dash are separated events. And you are expecting too much from this game. I guaranty you will be let downed if you don't get your hopes down (and by a lot).
