SkiFreak Posted January 28, 2007 Report Posted January 28, 2007 Vancouver 2010 the lunchbox! Vancouver 2010 the placemat! Vancouver 2010 the t-shirt! Ok it sounds a little like something from Spaceballs, but I thought I'd start a thread about any Vancouver 2010 merchandise (other than pins) that comes out. So it begins... This just shows you what a year makes in price... This is still related to the 2006 HBC stuff but VANOC's label is on it. 2006 merchandise is starting to appearing in thrift stores. I went to the local Value Village and found a brand new scarf, the woven coloured one that features the Olympic rings colors. All someone did was take the store tags off. Originally the scarf was about $30. I got it for $3.99.
SkiFreak Posted February 5, 2007 Author Report Posted February 5, 2007 Sale on at Zellers right now (don't know if it's at the Bay too). Buy one Olyimpic apparel and get a 2nd at 50% off, includes Vancouver 2010 merchandise but excludes pins. I think the sale goes till Feb 9th.
SkiFreak Posted October 1, 2007 Author Report Posted October 1, 2007 Is there any new stuff out besides pins and apparel. Are there any flags, glasses, other souvenirs yet?
SkiFreak Posted November 19, 2007 Author Report Posted November 19, 2007 Does anybody happen to know when HBC will reveal the 2008 Team Canada apparel? I thought it would be around this time.
Chateau Petrus Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 Does anybody happen to know when HBC will reveal the 2008 Team Canada apparel? I thought it would be around this time. It's always one or two weeks before the Opening Ceremony with a big press conference with some of the athletes. So, you have to wait until july. Until that, everything is keep secret.

Until that, everything is keep secret. Actually, during last year's games in Torino, HBC released the stuff, if I recall, four or five months prior to the games. I could be wrong though. Does anybody else remember?

I could be wrong though. Does anybody else remember? HBC released the first 2010 apparel in the summer of 2005 and their Torino apparel in November 2005....which they still haven't sold out.
Kenadian Posted November 20, 2007 Report Posted November 20, 2007 I still haven’t found any nice Vancouver 2010 merchandise, other than the pins. I find most of the clothing to be cheap and flimsy with uncomfortable fabrics. And the styles and colours for the clothing are very feminine. They need to do a better job...the stuff isn't exactly flying off the shelves.

And regarding my previous post, I was talking about the 2008 apparel that Team Canada will be wearing in Beijing next year.
mr.x Posted November 21, 2007 Report Posted November 21, 2007 i agree....but you have to note that HBC payed $100 million for the deal with VANOC. Roots instead was rumoured to have offered $50 million.....so I'm guessing money that would have gone to higher quality designs and fabrics instead went to VANOC.

That is outer bullsh!t, Roots was only told to prepare a bid for 2006, HBC was asked to prepare one for 2006-2012. Roots designs were alleged to be far better according to insiders where better, but there was a will to have HBC instead for other reasons. Roots bid for 2006 was around 15-20 million.
SkiFreak Posted November 25, 2007 Author Report Posted November 25, 2007 The local Bay got some new shirts in as well as about three different mugs. No new pins though.
SkiFreak Posted November 28, 2007 Author Report Posted November 28, 2007 With new pins and mascot plushies coming out tomorrow, I'll be surprised if our local Bay gets anything.
mr.x Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 ^ including things like mascot children books and game boards.
VAN_GUY_2010 Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 The Plush Toys are available on hbc.com... they are adorable! Quatchi is my favourite
tominger Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 (edited) I would like to buy something as well (I want to have Miga (2 x), Quachi and Sumi as plush dolls) - but HBC only ship to canadian residences!!! I was also told that the official vancouver 2010 online store wont ship to Europe. Strange policy.... Makes me a bit sad though. Does anyone know what I can do in gtting the mascots (except ebay)?? SkiFreak Posted November 28, 2007 Author Report Posted November 28, 2007 Here's what the mascot pins look like, from HBC's website: No Mukmuk pin?
Kenadian Posted November 28, 2007 Report Posted November 28, 2007 Poor Mukmuk...he's not a mascot, he's a sidekick.
SkiFreak Posted November 29, 2007 Author Report Posted November 29, 2007 Anybody pick up any 2010 Teletubbies, I mean mascots, today?
mr.x Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 i was at the Bay at around noon, a whole shelf of Miga toys had already gone and quite a few Quatchi and Sumi toys were also gone. I was surprised by the good quality....Quatchi was awesome, and huge....but expensive, $40. The other two go at $30. There were a lot of people checking out the stuff and the new mascot clothes. Quite a bit of media presence and HBC staff presence as well...Channel M and Global were there. It's definitely a huge marketing success.
VAN_GUY_2010 Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 hmm they should make a furry Quatchi backpack... i'd be all over that
mr.x Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 Note that HBC has a temporary exclusive license to sell mascot merchandise until the end of December. After that, anybody can sell them if they buy a VANOC license.
mr.x Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 ....and VANOC is hoping to make $500 million in merchandise sales.
SkiFreak Posted November 29, 2007 Author Report Posted November 29, 2007 It's definitely a huge marketing success. mr.x, my educational background is in marketing. I have studied retailing and merchandising. After just one day you can't call this a huge marketing success. From reading the other threads, international customers can't even buy the stuff through the HBC website, yet. VANOC doesn't even have an online store yet. We have to wait and see what the international reaction to the merchandise will be like once they (international customers) have access to it. It's too early to call it a success. Also, on the news they said that mascots are exclusive to HBC up to this Christmas. One of my gripes is that the demographic that VANOC focused on is too narrow - young children. Sure, the children want it, but are they the ones paying for it? Nope, their parents are. The mascots should have had a broader audience. If VANOC did they're reasearch correctly they would have targeted more age groups. Unfortunately, they chose to give the mascots a preschool look to them. Even on the news a number of adults were asked if they'd buy them for their kids and the answer was "no." So far the best mascots in my opinion are: LA '84: Sam the Eagle Calgary '88: Hidy and Howdy Lillehammer '94: Haakon and Kristan Sydney '00: Ollie, Syd, and Millie Salt Lake City '02: Powder, Copper, Coal Out of those five Olympics, I think the ones that come out on top are the Sydney and Salt Lake City mascots, with Calgary and LA in 2nd place, followed by Lillehammer. I picked Sydney and Salt Lake on top because I feel they best represent their host regions. Notice that I used the word regions, not city. Global BC may have been at the Bay, but did you see the story they aired? If not, here it is: http://www.canada.com/globaltv/bc/index.html
mr.x Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 ^ Sinclair is and has always been a moron. Quatchi mascot the runaway fave The Bay orders more toys; reports sales brisk on first day of sales Jeff Lee, Vancouver Sun Published: Wednesday, November 28, 2007 VANCOUVER - Quatchi the sasquatch is the runaway favourite, as far as adults who lined up today to buy the new 2010 Olympic and Paralympic mascots are concerned. With virtually no children in sight, adults were the curious ones who headed to The Bay store in Vancouver to get their Olympic Christmas shopping done. What they found was 800 toys, along with countless pieces of clothing and books, stacked in displays just inside the store's doors. When faced with the multiple choice question of which fuzzy toy to buy - Quatchi, Miga the black sea-bear, or Sumi, the helmeted thunderbird - most shoppers went for the sasquatch. They also didn't seem to be put off by the relatively high price of the toys, although many said they didn't like the idea it would cost them nearly $100 just for the three smallest mascots and an accompanying book. By noon, all sizes of Quatchi were outselling Miga two-to-one. Sumi, the Paralympic mascot, trailed far behind. But sales of all were so brisk that Bill Stanbury, the store's director, had to order another 1,000 toys at noon. And he had offers on the three large display mascots, leading the manufacturer to consider developing a new line in time for Christmas. "I'm a little nervous that we won't have enough," Stanbury said. "This is the Games. It's the first big sort of retail piece of the Games, and if you look at any of Games over the last 15 or 20 years, the mascots have done very well." The toys, produced by Burnaby-based Northern Gifts, are priced at $25 to $40, with a set including the $15 mascot storybook, running customers $95 to $115 plus tax. Repeating a trend that developed Tuesday when the mascots were unveiled in Surrey, adults were divided over the choice of designs. Christine Phillips loved them. She came into the store at noon to pick up some for her children, who she said haven't seen the designs yet. "I think they're great," she said. "I have two children and there are three [mascots]. I might have to put one on my desk. I love them. I think they are great, they were a good choice, even though we were expecting more of a whale or the spirit bear." But Jacqui Kipping said: "I think they're hideous. I wouldn't know what to do with them if somebody gave me one." Jony Li said she was buying some for a friend's children. But she said she liked them so much she'd want to curl up on a couch with one of them and her kittens. "I know there is a different response from adults. Some say they look like Japanese cultural characters," Li said, adding that the price wasn't too high for what she considered a unique souvenir. "It is once in a lifetime. There will not be a second chance to hold the Olympics in Vancouver." The Bay, one of the Vancouver Olympics' premier sponsors, will be the exclusive retailer until Dec. 31.
