I. The City of Boston

The city of Boston is one of the oldest cities in the New World, being founded in 1630. In those close to 400 years Boston has become a pillar of education, commerce, technology and most importantly to Bostonians, sport. (Lowell Pictured)

Greater Boston is home to 5.8 million people in four major cities, Boston, Quincy, Newton and Cambridge. This area encompasses both the North and South Shores of Boston Bay. GBA encompasses; Boston, Brockton, Brookline, Cambridge, Framingham, Haverhill, Lawrence, Lowell, Lynn, Malden, Manchester, Medford, Nashua, Newton, Quincy, Somerville, Waltham, Weymouth, and Worcester, and includes areas in two states, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

Boston is made of Allston, Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Brighton, Charlestown, Chinatown, Dorchester, the downtown, East Boston, Fenway/Kenmore, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, Mission Hill, North End, Roslindale, Roxbury, South Boston, South End and West Roxbury. These neighborhoods range from the historic, (downtown) to the world famous (Fenway) to the working class (Dorchester). (Downtown to the left, Dorchester to the lower left, Cambridge to the right, the financial district to the lower right)

II. Boston: Politics, Culture, and History

Boston is located in New England region of the United States of America in the state of Massachusetts. The seat of power for the nation is Washington D.C, and for New England and Massachusetts is Boston. Boston is the federal city for New England and home of the Massachusetts State Legislator. Boston is also home to one of the Federal Reserve Banks and has offices for many government agencies.

Boston, Massachusetts is in a democratic society with a plurality voting system and with the Office of the Mayor as a strong executive leader. Thomas Menino is the current mayor of Boston and one of the biggest supporters of Olympic bid. Under his leadership the city of Boston has given full political and financial support to the Bid Committee, along with getting full support from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Politics and culture are closely connected in the ‘city on the hill’. The city has a rich culture that is diverse and truly unique to the United States. Boston is unlike any city you will find in the New World with its warmth, hospitality and historical significance. Two of the most significant cultural groups in Boston are the Italians and the Irish. Boston is famous for the Irish heritage and culture in the city that can be seen from the architecture, surnames, local pubs and the food preferences in the area.

Also important to the cultural fabric of Boston is the intelligential astuteness that the city has because of the large number of academic institutions in the city from the world famous Harvard and MIT to Tufts University. Mark Twain once said, ‘In New York they ask "how much money does he have?" In Philadelphia, they ask, "who were his parents?" In Boston they ask, "how much does he know?’ With the educated comes the numerous centres of the performing arts including the Boston Pops and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Constrasting this is the the local ska inclfuence in club music and Boston as a major centre of hardcore rock and punk. But even with the culture, Boston is still a city of the people for the people.

With culture comes the people. Bostonians are notorious for their ‘Boston English’ as their dialect of the English language which is a subset of the more general New England English. Boston slang is famous in movies and is the easiest way to tell if a person comes from this great city.

Culture and history go hand in hand, and Boston is no expection, the city is famous for such events as the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party and as the site of the oldest institute of higher education in the Americas. Boston is the home of revolution and had many key battles against the British in and around the city. Boston’s history now is intertwined with education, technology and poltical idealism.

III. Boston and Sport

Boston is a city known for sports and sport culture. Boston has numerous professional teams in a wide range of sports, all of which have had very successful tenures in Boston both on and off the field. First among the Boston’s teams in the Boston Red Sox, one of the most storied teams in North American sport. The Red Sox have won 6 World Series and have had some of the most famous names in baseball amongst their ranks.

Next among the Boston teams is the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association. The Celtics are 16 champions of the NBA and are one of the most loved teams in the league. The team reflects the Irish roots of the city while representing the type of city Boston is. The team has also played host to some of the greats of basketball including Larry Bird.

With the Sox and the Celtics is one of the original 6 National Hockey League teams, the Boston Bruins. The Bruins have won 5 titles and again, like almost all Boston teams, has some of the greats in their ranks, Cam Neely and Bobby Orr to name a few.

Continuing with Boston sports championship ways, Boston (more appropriately Foxborough) are the New England Patriots of the National Football League (American). 3 time Super Bowl Champions and home to such players as Tom Brady.

Boston is also home to a professional field lacrosse team in the Boston Cannons of the MLL and the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer (football)

Boston is home to the world famous Boston Marathon and the Head of the Charles Regatta rowing competition held on the Charles River.

The final aspect of sports in Boston is that of the NCAA. Boston is home to many universities that field teams in almost all sports and have won numerous national championships. These universities are going to be one of the central figures in a Boston Olympic Games.

IV: Concepts of Boston

The visual concept is defined in 4 colors, green, gold, blue and white. All four colours are representative in the numerous sports teams in the city and reflect many aspects of the cultural heritage of the city, from the predominated Irish and Italian heritage, to the colours of the harbor and the landscape. Actually renderings of the ‘look of the games’ will come in the years preceding the games, most like about a year before the games.

Boston is proposing a cultural concept of contrasting and conflicting elements like in Boston itself. During the games there will be multiple expressions of the culture of Boston and of New England. From performances of the Boston Pops on the Charles River to modern popular music performances in one of the many performing centers in Boston. The Cutler Majestic Theatre, Boston Opera House, The Wand Center, Schubert Theatre and the Orpheum Theatre will play host to the numerous performing art groups including the Boston Ballet, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops and the Handel and Haydn Society and multiple to-be-determined performers ranging in all genres of music.

V: The Dates of Boston

The dates for a Boston 2028 Olympic Games will be July 28th through August 13th. These dates where chosen as to not interfere with other major sporting events during the summer, including Le Tour de France. The dates do not interfere with any of the major tournaments or other sporting events that occur during the summer months in an Olympic year.

Boston’s legacy plan is in four parts, the venues, the infrastructure, the profile of the city, and the universities.

Venues:

The legacy of the venues will vary from venue to venue. A majority of the venues are already in place and only need upgrades as part of their legacy. But there are numerous venues that will leave a lasting impact on the city. The most important is Boston Olympic Stadium. The 110,000 seat stadium after the games will be downgraded to an 80,000 seat venue that will be the permanent home to the New England Revolution of MLS, a world class track venue for the Eastern United States, the National Stadium of the United States and a possible future venue for the IAAF World Championships.

The Olympic Aquatic Centre is a 4 pool venue that will become a sports and recreation centre for the city of Boston and a competition centre for the universities in Boston. It will also serve as another possible world championship venue and as a training facility to American world class swimmers and divers.

The Olympic Rowing Centre, already a site of a world famous competition, will become a permanent venue that will become the official training centre for flat water canoe and kayaking in the United States. The Olympic Velodrome will also become the track cycling training centre for the USOC.

The most interesting legacy plan of Boston 2028 is that of the patinodrome for inline racing. The venue will receive major upgrades and be turned into a speed skating oval for the Eastern United States. There is precious few winter sports venues in on the Eastern Seaboard and the bid committee believes there is more need for a speed skating oval in Boston after the games then a European style patinodrome for inline racing.

The final legacy venues is the Massachusetts Lawn Tennis and Bowling Club. This facility will be one of the only grass court facilities in North America and be home to the United States Tennis Open on rotating years with Flushing Meadows in New York City. This venue will be one of the most important for the city of Boston because it will make Boston a centre for tennis training in the city and also provide the older generation of Boston an opportunity to become active in a social sport like lawn bowling. The site will also house a squash complex.

Infrastructure:

The infrastructure for Boston will receive a major facelift. Though already excellent, major upgrades to highways connecting Bosotn to Worchester and Lowell, the addition of multiple world class hotels and venues. Also the main complex will redevelope and make usable an industralial park in the North Shore of Boston.

The Image of Boston:

The bid committee wants to develop Boston into a major tourist destination for people coming to the United States on holiday. The committee wants to use the games as a platform for people all across the world to see Boston as a chance to experience a unique and wonderful culture and people that is unlike anything in the world. The Olympics will be part of a redevelopment of Boston for not only a destination for business travellers but also holiday-makers wanting to experience one of the most brillant areas of the United States.

Universities:

The universities and more importantly the partner universities of Boston University, Boston College, Northeastern University, University of Massachusetts and Harvard University will receive untold benefits from the games. From upgrades to more then a dozen universities sports centers to the addition for new residencies, the universities are a key part of the games plan. Education is a key aspect of Boston and to not include the major education institutions in the city. The upgraded venues, the new venues, the increased infrastructure and the chance for a cash injection from using dorms as part of the accommodation plan will give the universities untold benefits for the students and for the city at large.

VII: The Questions and Boston (points iv, v, xviii)

Boston is a vibrant and varied city with a long, rich history, a diverse society full of cultural diversity and many ethnic groups. With this Boston is a vibrant city of industry, technology and education. Boston has the resources, expertise, commitment and willingness to host an Olympic Games to the best of the city and regions ability. Boston is fully compete to the principles of Olympism and is fully willing and able to uphold these ideals.

Sport, Art and Culture are the three pillars of the Olympic Movement and Boston embodies all of them through the cities passion for sport, the numerous and varied dedications to art, and is a beacon of culture for Massachusetts, New England and the United States of America. We believe there is no city that embodies the Olympic ideals as well as Boston and we wish to host the games in 2028 to show this.

Boston is suitable for the games in a three-fold answer. Boston has the non-sport and sport infrastructure to host a successful Olympic Games with detailed planning to ensure the use of this infrastructure after the Games are over, Boston has the passion for sport that is need in any Olympic city to be able to host a successful Olympic Games, and finally Boston has the resources, both government and private to ensure the financial viability of any Olympic Games hosted in the city.

The Olympic Games will serve to show off the city of Boston and the region of New England to the world. New England is one of the most over-looked areas in the United States, but it is one of the most beautiful, historical, cultured and enchanting places in the United States. The Olympic Games will leave a lasting legacy on the city in both the legacy of the sports infrastructure and the international profile of the city.

Boston’s impact on the games is simple. Boston’s motto is ‘The Revolutionary Games’. It is both a nod to the past of Boston but also the ideal that Boston has towards the games itself. Boston wants to redefine and refresh the Olympic Games to able to connect to the other 2 billion people that do not turn into watch the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympic Games. We want to simplify and redefine what it is to be a host and what defines an Olympic Games. Boston is about using what is in place in the most efficient way and being minimal on its impact financially, environmentally and on the daily lives of Bostonians during the 7 year construction period.

The impact on the city of Boston that the Olympic Games will have, it will leave a lasting sports legacy to the universities and people of Boston to be better able to host international competitions in the future, to develop sport in the city and to become a major destination for top-level performance training in multiple sports. And this above all is why the City of Boston wants the Olympic Games in 2028.

I do have shitloads of pictures and maps showing the areas being used, but I have no idea how to put them up from a word document.

Anyways, I followed the format from the rules I put in place at the end of August, because thats when the majority of this bid was made.

Enjoy.

I found my original budget

I am not going into a detailed security plan, even though its an important part of any reall games, in a fantasy bid, and my having no experience with an actualy games like baron and puppy have, that i would be able to produce a descent enough one.

I have a logo, its ****, but it will do, if anyone wants to make one, I would be more then happy to accept.

I also assume that lobbying will still be a full part of this competition, as always. I have actually produced a fairly detailed and time consuming bid. I really want to say something, but I just can't.
