ñuto 2
Born on 25th February 1950 in Cercedilla (Madrid), Francisco "Paquito" Fernández-Ochoa was the first and only Spanish sportsman to win a gold medal at the Winter Olympic Games,in Sapporo 1972. In Sapporo, the favourite was the Italian champion Gustavo Thoeni, but Paquito surprised everybody (and probably himself too) when he got the gold medal in slalom (SL). He had never won anything before, not even a single event in alpine skiing World Championships. His first and only victory in a World Cup was to come in Zakopane (Poland) in 1973, in slalom. Also that year he was third in special slalom in St. Moritz World Championships. He dies today after a hard fight against cancer. requiscat in pace
