Well, I think it's worrying because they felt they had to do this, despite the organising committee doing a good job with security.

"This was a unanimous squad decision and is not reflective of the efforts made by the organising committee to create the safest environment possible for all athletes."

I mean, if they pulled out citing the security of the event as a problem you'd think that wasn't good but at least Dehli 2010 could learn lessons and do better next year. But it sounds as though the event has been secured as well as it can be and yet the team have still decided to pull out. That's sounds to me like it's indicative of a much wider security issue which goes beyond the securing the venues and is much harder to quell.

I think rob they got a more directed threat to the British Team proper then the general event itself. When it is the high commission itself making the warning then it is a sign that it is more pointed then the event in general. Think of it have any other countries done the same ? This is a World Championship and Britain is engaged in the region with military action at this time. Then there is the past colonialism in the region and the fact that attacking the British Team would have the greatest media impact of any of the possible teams. Just the British pulling out has made for a story on BBC world news.

If the Americans were in to badminton they might be the target of the threats.

again you say not reflective of the efforts made on the part of the organizing committee which is true but a committee or government can only do so much anywhere in the world.

I am sure the same type of threat communication was made in regards to Englands cricket players that had them pull out recently. A threat that would scare off a team could be as simple as insider information into where they are staying and communicating that to the high commission saying do not come we know where you live during your stay here , remember the Marriot in Pakistan and the Hotels in Mumbai .

With these single sport events you don't have a totally sealed athletics village . New Delhi 2010 you are probably looking at a secure compound fortified Huge Difference.

Nothing is totally safe anywhere of course.

Some construction updates of the venues (i think they'll be ready on time but they better hurry now since its almost a year left for the CWG) (NOTE: Most of the pics are from one month ago)

I don't think the English withdraw is a big issue, since none of the other home nations are leaving or any other nations for that matter.

True, but the article talked of a "specific threat". There was obviously a very good reason for the pull-out, the details of which we're not aware of but the team are. I wouldn't say it's not a big issue, especially if you wear English colours and are trying to prepare for 2010. As JJ rightly said, at the very least, you're not going to be in a good competitive frame of mind.

The thing is even with the tight deadlines you'll only see a handful of workers at some venues.

Mike Fennel and Mike Hooper recently have said that the manpower and activity has been stepped up markedly . The pictures posted in Feb of this year certainly don't show a clear picture of what is going on in August in New Delhi. They are talking about a vast majority of these venues ready by December and an Athletes village completed in March of 2010. That would be a relief to Mike Fennel who oversaw inspections for PASO for Santo Domingo 2003 and Rio 2007 with stadiums coming down to only being ready in the month proceeding the Games. The Term the Paint still drying was used in regards to those two Pan Am Games . Manchester in the middle of 2001 was endangered of being canceled according to the government ministers in charge at the time .

Go to Manhcester 2002 the good the bad the ugly and you will find the article under exhibit I where you will find news of the UK cabinet ministers aid in charge laying out the option of canceling the games in 2002.

Carter was commissioned by former Home Secretary Jack Straw before the last general election to prepare a report on the funding of the games.

The result of his investigation is a strongly worded letter to the British cabinet in which he says, "In order to stage an adequate Commonwealth Games an additional finance of 114 million pounds is required and I would add a further 10 million pounds to this.

"Looking further the choices are relatively simple: either cancel the Games or secure an adequate level of funding to deliver an adequate event."

Again no one is without problems or drama staging sports festivals unless you are South Korean or American for the Olympics.

A picture I saw of the Venue with Players on the court has an Indian Soldier with an Automatic Rifle strapped across his chest inside the Arena. That to me seems very extreme but may be what the Indian authorities feel is needed. if it is that bad that you have to have a soldier inside an indoor venue the the threat must be very serious . It would not be a great environment to compete in.

I think Rob it is as simple as someone emailing the high commission with the location the English Athletes were staying at for the tournament which would scare the hell out of anyone consisting the Hotel bomdings in Pakistan and India in the last year or so.

The Commonwealth Games you have a different thing thou. Mike Hooper has said if it is a security lock down of New Delhi that is needed both the Indian Government and the Federation are prepared to do that . They don't want it to come to that because it would totally spoil the games atmosphere but Athletes and Spectator Safety is most important. The Federation is going to have the games staged in New Delhi despite rumors spread in the Aussie press.

Is KL the city on standby?>

Mike Hooper has said no city is on standby and that it has been rumors circulated by the Aussie press. Mike Hooper is the CEO of the federation . Austin Sealy another executive member of the federation has said if they cannot stage the games in New Delhi then they would cancel the games .

It is very clear the games will be staged in New Delhi or not at all. You would be looking at everyone being on notice right now especially broadcasters and media.

New Delhi to hide slums with bamboo 'curtains' during 2010 Commonwealth Games

By Dean Nelson in New Delhi

New Delhi is to hide the city's poor during the 2010 Commonwealth Games by erecting bamboo 'curtains' around their squalid shanty homes.

The Games was supposed to be India's moment to show off its rapidly rising wealth and banish memories of a country once synonymous with chronic poverty.

But with barely a year to go officials have conceded defeat. Vast supplies of bamboo poles have been ordered from the jungle states of Mizoram and Assam to keep the poor out of sight during the games.

New Delhi is littered with makeshift slums which house the millions of migrants who pour into the city searching for work to escape the poverty of rural life in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Their inhabitants are often seen naked at the roadsides washing at standpipes or defecating astride open sewers.

Officials had planned to shift their settlements to the outskirts of the city so the city that television viewers and visitors see is restricted to the capital's gleaming new Metro system and world-class airport, and its smart new roads, pavements and streetlights.

But yesterday they revealed they simply could not resettle enough slum-dwellers or street-sleepers, and that they had opted to hide the problem instead.

Rakesh Mehta, the city government's chief secretary, insisted the measure would be limited to areas where the locals could not be relocated in time.

"This is happening at very few locations close to Games venues - particularly east Delhi," he said.

Officials are desperate to relocate a large stable which houses 65 old horses and is renowned for its stench, and to conceal a colony of scrap dealers.

One official said the government was so desperate to clean up the city it is preparing to offer free rickshaws and retraining courses to those whose jobs clutter the pavements.

Well I have noticed and hey whats new . Brisbane 1982 I watched a clip that Aborigines were being prevented from Peacefully marching down the street to the main stadium in Protest of the Games. The Local politicians wanted to cover that up of course. Incredible in the background of this speaker was a Shell oil service station which was Ironic. Shell later on would be much of the problem in regards to the Niger Delta and the killing of peaceful activist Ken Saro Wiwa.

Hey atleast Bamboo keeps with New Delhi being a Green Games LOL

Yeah Scotland hosting Three Times for a mere 6 million population while that equals all Asian Caribbean and African hostings combined. Goes to show why Africans generally consider the olympics and the Commonwealths a White persons set of sports festivals.

Jim jones

What about all of the medal winners who are not white, ie about 90% of athletic winners, the kenyans, chinese table tennis stars, african football teams. The majority of olympic greats have not been white

Maybe if Africa was not so corrupt and used their money like in the west and other nations then they could host more events

I agree with your point about Africa and it's culture of corruption.

However, the majority of Olympic/sport greats are not non-white as you say - Michael Phelps, Olga Korbut, Nadia Commaneci, Steve Redgrave dispel that theory to name a few. Caucasian persons actually win more medals proportionately than any other ethnic group as a matter of fact in sports competition when you add up the success of athletics, swimming, gymnastics etc. Not that it's important - the competition is what counts. I get what you are saying though about the absurd claim that the CWG are somehow racist - Kuala Lumpar, Delhi?

In 1980's Queensland under Sir Joh Bjelke Peterson's regime it was illegal for ANYONE to stage a protest. My entire criminal record is from being a student in Brissy causing mischief and breaking his draconian laws!
