Sir Rols
Looks like the Indians are getting a bit twitchy about their preparations and want to rope a Gandhi in to kick-start things: Kalmadi wants Rahul for Commonwealth GamesCNN-IBN New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi may be roped in to lead the 2010 Commonwealth Games preparation efforts. The call for Rahul has come in the wake of concerns over the tardy pace of preparations. Chairman of the Organising Committee Suresh Kalmadi has proposed that Rahul be brought in to head preparations in a bid to improve the image of the Congress party as well as the government. The UPA government wants to salvage the preparations during its remaining phase at the centre before elections in mid-2009. Rahul is also an acceptable option for the warring duo of Suresh Kalmadi and Sports Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar. The party is also looking at promoting Rahul as a youth icon. Rahul is currently party general secretary in charge of youth affairs. Incidentally, Rahul's father, Rajiv Gandhi made a mark as a successful organiser for the first time with the 1982 Asian Games. Jim856796
Sorry nobody posted in this thread in months. Anyway, a new terminal at Indira Gandhi airport is being planned, the Delhi Metro is having six new stretches, and the government is planning to increase power production from 7,000 MW from the cuttent 5,400 MW to meet power demands. mattygs
I havent heard. Unless they go international, which is entirely possible, I imagine the obvious choice would be Wizcraft, who did the handover in Melbourne - and appears to be one of India's leading special event management company. Jim856796
There will be a 5-kilometre long flyover road connecting the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to the athletes village. It is to be built within 24 months.
Alexjc
Typical mid-gap (i.e. boring years) between games artical appeared in the NZ Herald today(15/11/08): AFP Reported: NEW DELHI GAMES THREATENED New Delhi, India could miss out on hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2010 if a dispute over the construction of the athletes' village is not resolved, a senior official said. The four yearly GAmes featuring 71 teams frome the Commonwealth countries are to be held in New Delhi from October 3 - 14, 2010. The athletes' village being built on the banks of the Yamuna River has been embroiled in a legal tussle after envirnmental groups protested that the construction would ruin the river bed. The Delhi High Court has asked an environmental expert to look inton whether the village that is to house 8500 athletes and officials should be built on the site. Austin Sealy, the chairman of the Commonwealth Games Federation co-ordinating committee, said any change, at this late stage, to the Games Village arrangements would seriously jeopardise India's hosting of the Games. AFP This kind of backs up the artical mentioned a few postings back by JJ, but as everyone who's nation has hosted knows, this seems just a ploy to stimulate publicity. I can remember the build up to the 1990 CWGs in Auckland and all the BS that went with it... And now just look what's comming out of London... (As if anyone could've predicted the future on 6 July 2005...Look what happened the next day! )
Rafa
Isn't this a real threat though? How far along are they with construction? If the village site is not available...what then? back to Melbourne?
jim jones
Isn't this a real threat though? How far along are they with construction? If the village site is not available...what then? back to Melbourne? Austin Sealy has said they will cancel the games completely and not move to another city. To me that is an idle threat as 30 million in Tv rights would be thrown away for Australia and would that perhaps make for a downturn in interest for viewers for that market in 2014 ? jim jones

Tokelau is a New Zealand dependancy, for a start! Anyway to back up a bit, there is no stand by host city if the unlikely was to happen - the Games would be cancelled outright! Still what blew this situation up was the Youth Game in Pune. Outwardly a success but as teams start to come home, the horror stories of lax security and rat infested accomodations. New Delhi has been strongly advised to be ready by late next year (2009).

jim jones
Alexjc, what's happening in Perth 2018 (in your sig)? I think they are dependent on the word from the Australian Commonwealth Games Association . The ACGA are to render a decision on November 29th to whether Australia will go ahead with a bid. Perry Crosswhite the CEO has said in the past it may be too soon in the awarding cycle to think 2018 and that may actually be a wise choice as Australia lost to a Repeat bidder for 1974 in a huge way . Australia had a former Olympics City as their Candidate being Melbourne thrashed by Christchurch New Zealand by a 36 to 2 margin. Adelaide is certainly out until a new government comes in because the current state Government is not supporting forwarding a bid. Gold Coast and Perth have made the noises for bidding on 2018 but hardly anything has come across the net lately on those two cities or any others for that matter. Alexjc
Alexjc, what's happening in Perth 2018 (in your sig)? Part of my wish list of hosts. Perth hosting XXII Commonwealth Games. They have mooted the idea even though it would only have been 12 years since Australia last hosted, they make great hosts. I have no problems with this happening as Perth (and Darwin) is so far detached from the east coast seaboard, Jakarta's closer. Surprisingly it would only be the third city to host twice.(Edinbrugh and Auckland the other two.)
mattygs
Reading the Delhi website, they have put out to tender the contracts for the 2010 Ceremonies. Looks like they are going the way of Beijing. They are looking for too contracts. The first one exclusively to an Indian company who I am guessing are the ideas people. The second one is open to international bidders, and they have to have experience in the production of eventz at an Olympic/Com Games ceremonies level. This is the ceremonies *advisor* contract. baron-pierreIV
/\ /\ Matty, that makes more sense if it's laid out that way. At least it's clear-cut the way they wish to hire the talents and where responsibiliteis are drawn. Unlike Beijing where they threw it open to the world SEEKING IDEAS as well; and then threw them all out, using Yimou's and other home-grown ideas in the end. Do you know which foreign consultant group was eventually used in Beijing?

baron-pierreIV
Matty, do you know who did the Atlantis Resort Opening in Dubai the other night? Reports say the whole shebang cost $35 mil, including $4 mil for Kylie Minogue's fee, and $6.5 mil for the fireworks. Reports also say that the fireworks were staged by Grucci's -- which, and here's the unbelievable part -- staged the Beijing show?? Grucci's doing the fireworks for China???
