New Commonwealth Games disaster as scoreboard collapses

A GIANT scoreboard at the Commonwealth Games rugby sevens venue crashed to the ground yesterday in the latest embarrassing mishap to blight the troubled event.

A chain support gave way at one corner of the massive temporary scoreboard at the Delhi University ground, sending the left-hand side pivoting downward, smashing the bottom left of the screen into the ground and the bottom right into the iron support frame.

Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens competition manager Kevin Culliver said it was lucky that it "happened when no spectators were around".

The two-day sevens tournament takes place on Monday and Tuesday.

The Delhi Games have suffered numerous construction and technical problems.

A footbridge collapsed at the main stadium, part of the roof at the weightlifting venue caved in, weighing scales at the boxing were faulty while the news and information service at the main media centre crashes on a regular basis.

Shock! Horror! Amazement!

Someone contact the Delhi 2010 security coordination team and ask them how a crowd of spectators slipped into a venue and actually came to see a sporting contest...

Considering how things have been going, I'm not sure if you're joking or not.

In case you were wondering, the Aussies beat the home team 5-2 in that match.

Well, considering how hockey is famous on India, i'm not surprised.

And wow..the scoreboard. Thank god no events were taking place during that. But jeez, whats next, the JLN roof will collapse (i'll blame Yellowvest for it  )

Great table-tennis games this afternoon between India and England. Fantastic home crowd completely filling the venue who all stood up and clapped even after England had beaten their team. Good stuff. B)

Same here, during the woman's final between the India and Singapore. The home crown just went wild every time the home team scored a point.

It's CGI surely!

As for the scoreboard collapse, considering the crowds we had been seeing does it really make a difference the event wasn't underway.

To be fair though the crowds have improved significantly over the last couple of days - the commentators are now usually complaining about them making too much noise at crucial points in proceedings.

Wanna know where the tickets are going...

JUST THE TICKET

Fancy a ticket to the Delhi Games? Just find your nearest kabaadiwala. The Hindustan Times newspaper tracked down a junk dealer on the streets of Delhi selling as scrap paper 3000 valid Games tickets to events such as Thursday's Australia-India hockey game, wrestling matches and the athletics. The report comes at a time when most events are playing to sparse crowds and the few locals interested in attending are complaining of limited access to tickets. Despite the increasingly delusional assertions of Suresh Kalmadi, Delhi's besieged organising chief, that hundreds of thousands of tickets have been sold, the hard evidence shows that most crowds at these Games have numbered in the hundreds, and some only in double figures. Kalmadi was a notable absentee from the daily media briefing given by Games officials on Friday, but his understudy, Lalit Bhanot, reported that 900,000 tickets had been sold, generating 320 million ($7.37m) rupees in revenue. ''Where, then, are the people who purchased them,'' he was asked, ''because they certainly aren't watching the Games?'' Bhanot said organisers had begun distributing tickets to schools, but was adamant all was well. ''There's a good attendance. It has improved very much.''

There you go...tickets as scrap paper. Says it all about the whole Delhi 2010 experience.

One positive though from the urine-weak turn out of spectators at these games...the sound from all those fecking Vuvuzelas that were supposedly being sold for and allowed into the venues seems to have been about as loud as a Kalmadi apology.

As long as you don't look at the stands it's ok.

What I mean is, the crowd noise has been good, and the atmosphere has come across well on TV. But as soon as you look at the stands it amazes you how few people are actually making all that noise.

I guess that's a thumbs up to the people who did buy tickets.

Sorry to have to post another negative article:

Delhi Police says 'No' to merchandising stores inside CWG venues

There seems to be no end to setbacks for the Organising Committee (OC) of the XIX Commonwealth Games . And they seem to be coming with an automatic regularity everyday. This time the Delhi Police has overruled the committee's order to set up 63 CWG merchandise stores inside the stadium venues. "We cannot allow things to be taken in or out of the venue because of security reasons as it could be risky not just for the players but also for the spectators as well, " said Rajan Bhagat , spokesperson of the Delhi Police when contacted.

It has ordered the removal of the existing 17 merchandise stores from the stadium premises by Saturday. When asked if they failed to work in tandem with the OC who had allowed their merchandising partner to open stores inside the venues, Mr Bhagat refused to comment. Premier Brands Ltd. (PBL), merchandising partner and the sole retail concessionaire for CWG 2010, had a contract with the OC to open 63 stores in 10 stadium venues. Of these the merchandising partner had opened just 17 so far which is being shut down at present following the police commissioner's order on Thursday.

Thirteen out of the 17 stores were in the main Jawaharlal Nehru stadium and the rest four in other stadiums selling inventory worth Rs 1 crore. "We are in the process of removing our stores which will be done in the next two days," says Suresh Kumar , chairman, PBL. "We have incurred loss of inventory worth over Rs 4 crore in all the 10 stadium venues where inventories were dispersed and stores were yet to be opened," he added. The company has incurred a loss worth Rs 4-5 crore that includes all cost borne on inventory and the cost of venue contractors , which was Rs 2.5 lakh per store.

Mr Lalit Bhanot, OC general secretary, said he had no clue about the development. "I have no idea on the Delhi police orders as I was busy with meetings throughout the day," he said. The abrupt order has come at a time when the CWG merchandise was seeing brisk sales.T-shirts , vuvuzelas, jackets, casual wear and kid's apparels, generic items like umbrellas, key-chains and mugs were some of the popular items. PBL has sold 65,000 T-shirts already out of the first lot of 75,000. Around 21,000 vuvuzelas had been sold out of our total stock of 50,000 and 10,000 Shera soft toys have been picked up from a lot of 25,000.

"We had run out of stocks and we were filling almost everyday ," Kumar said. "Our total investment was in the tune of Rs 4 crore," he added. "We were anticipating a profit of about Rs 10-12 crore (over $2.25 million) but now we don't think we will be able to make even half of that," says Kumar. Merchandising, however, began quite late in India for CWG in comparison big ticket sports events in other nations. For the 2008 Beijing Olympics, it started as early as three years before the Games while the 2012 London Olympics' flagship store and online sales have already started functioning.

"We were given four dates earlier but the OC failed to launch the merchandise and now we are at a complete loss. No assurance has been given so far by the OC to handle the situation," says Kumar. The merchandiser was even slated to sell the products in the entire country but OC decided to restrict it only to Delhi and the national capital region because of lack of time.

I wouldn't apologise for posting that as a negative story Rob...it seems just yet another example of the sheer ineptitude that has made these games absolutely ridiculous as a representation of a once grand sports festival as well as India's so called emergence from Third World standards.

And just to continue...

Athletics track invaded by stray dog

As if the problems couldn't get worse for Commonwealth Games organisers, a stray dog evaded security and run amok inside the main athletics stadium on Saturday.

A women's 400m hurdles heat was about to start when the mangy dog darted across the finish line and onto the field.

Initially, no-one made any effort to catch it before several officials tried cornering the mutt, who gave them the run around before darting out an exit as the crowd in Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium erupted in laughter.

AFP photographers said the dog had also been seen inside the arena earlier in the day before the competition started, playing with some cables.

It wasn't just dogs that athletes had to deal with on Saturday, with large birds circling low over the stadium and swooping down on the field.

Despite their best efforts to keep mosquitoes away, the athletics stadium has been beset by insects, moths, cockroaches and some very large unidentified bugs that have been dropping down into the press tribune.

Well, that was quite a funny episode; and if it happened at a well-organised Games it'd be seen as such. Instead, it's seen as indicitive of Delhi's level of organisation. We've had dogs and squirrels and things in football stadiums in England on occassion. Shame it wasn't a black cat; they could have done with one of those really.

Another piece of bad news this morning:

Acting on reports of unavailability of tickets on counters despite empty stadiums, the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee on Sunday removed Sanjeev Mittal as the head of ticketing.

He will be replaced by Monica Jolly, who will now be the new ticketing in-charge.

Mittal has been asked to handle catering and venue operations.

CWG Chief Mike Fennell had said in a press conference that they were still concerned over the way ticket sales were being handled. "Something is not right with this," he said.

I couldn't help but laud at the trony of this statement.

Remembers these?

Well, today in an interview with the BBC Kalmadi claimed that the rooms that had been photographed had never been intended to be used by athletes. He said that they were only for staff.

The fact of the matter is, these were taken by a delegate inspecting the rooms and were handed to the media in disgust. So he's a liar.

Secondly, even it it were true, it says something about his character that he thinks these are acceptable conditions for staff doesn't it?

Oh, he also denies he was booed in the opening ceremony
