Delhi 2010

Recommended Posts

It seems that Delhi 2010 will indeed get a new logo, Thank God, they've been using the glorified ICGA logo for far too long. They are currently putting the creative portolio up for tender. The articles I have read, have said it will be a total brief, including developing a new logo, creating print material, tv advertisements etc etc etc.

Can't wait to finally see a new visual identity for Delhi 2010, their mascot is already a winner.

Before Delhi hosts the 2010 Commonwealth Games, India is going to host another not-so-well-known international sporting event at the city of Hyderabad. Yes, the same Indian city that gave the world its first Afro-Asian Games in 2003.

It is called the fourth World Military Games. The 3 cities, 2 of them Italian, has hosted these Games in the past.

1995 - Rome, Italy

1999 - Zagreb, Croatia

2003 - Catania, Italy

In 2011, these Games are going to be hosted, hold your breath here, in RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL. Yes, the same city that will host the 2007 Pan American Games next week!

By the way, how many athletes and officials participated at Melbourne 2006? According the article above, here is what I found.

Quote: "It was pointed out that around 10,000 athletes and sports officials from 71 countries are expected to come to be in Delhi for the Games. Besides, a large number of sport tourists are also expected to converge for the event."

Huh? That many of them potentially as the Summer Olympics? I don't know how they came up with that number. <_<

I have noticed the Indian media often write things which are just factually wrong. I read one yesterday which said something like *Delhi won over Hamilton (New Zealand) to host the 2010 CG*

And, meanwhile, there seems to be a "very small whiff" of civil war starting to come out from next-door Pakistan.

I hope that Delhi 2010 organizers can get the venues ready on time because it seems that Delhi wants these road projects to be completed, before that opening ceremony.

After that article, about Delhi's transportation projects for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, comes out, this opinionated Business Standard article lashes out on the follies of such ambitions. So much so, the projects are being compared to the famous saying of Marie Antoinette.

Link: Business Standard-> Sunil Sethi: Delhi's Transports Of Horror

Here is the first paragraph of this article: "Echoing the public’s anger and distrust of dangerous buses, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s comment that she would rather walk than take a Blueline bus is all of a piece with what the notorious French queen said about people eating cake if they couldn’t get bread. It is the sort of silly, self-serving remark or gesture that politicians are given to making as an expression of solidarity with public disquiet, like Mrs Gandhi going to office in a horse-drawn buggy during the oil crisis of the early 1970s or Orissa Chief Minister Biju Patnaik riding a bicycle to work in Bhubaneshwar."

Delhi 2010 organizers want to build the athletes' village "beside a stinking river?" :o Lovely thought, guys! <_<

This is going to get interesting, on the 2010 preparation front for sure.

On top of that, a "Green Games" is expected for the 2010 CG.

Delhi CG joins hands with UNEP

NEW DELHI: The Organising Committee of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi has joined hands with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to make the quadrennial event ‘Green Games’.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has roped in the UNEP for both the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games as well the third Youth Commonwealth Games in Pune next year.

Recognising that major sporting events make impact on the environment in many ways like clearing land for setting up event sites, the need for large volumes of water, waste disposal, the organising committee has made a pledge to ensure that the Games will be a ‘Green Games’.

The UNEP has certain standards for compliance that will have to be met before the stamp of ‘Green Games’ is awarded.

The IOA President Suresh Kalmadi said that the various stakeholders were already in the process of meeting these requirements.

However, the organising committee has shown scant regard to the complaints from the various quarters like felling of scores of trees, some century-old and rare, at various sites marked for infrastructure development for the Games. — Principal Correspondent

On the positive side of Delhi's preparation for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Bombardier was awarded to build trains for the city's metro.

From Forbes.com:

07.19.07, 10:51 AM ET

BERLIN (Thomson Financial) - Bombardier Inc said it has won an order for 340 metro cars from the Delhi Metro Rail Corp in a deal worth about 590 mln usd.

The Canadian engineer said deliveries are scheduled to begin in the last quarter of 2008 with completion two years later.

New Delhi is expanding its transport network in preparation for the Commonwealth Games, which it will host in Oct 2010.

Will there be "a lot of tourists" come to India, especially to Delhi, for the 2010 Commonwealth Games?

Link: The Economic Times: Visa-On-Arrival Likely In Delhi, Mumbai For 2009

Quote: "In the last budget, finance minister P Chidambaram gave a five-year tax holiday from income tax for two, three and four star hotels and convention centres in the National Capital Region of Delhi and adjacent districts of Faridabad, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad and Noida. This was in light of the hotel room shortage in the NCR, given the expected surge in demand during Commonwealth Games in 2010."

Visa on arrival? What is that?

Actually Guardian if you go to the Glasgow flyover of the athletics village proposed and then go over the same area with google earth you will find the pennisula that the Athletes village will be on is bisected by the new LRT line proposed to go to celtic and the velodrome/indoor arena cluster. The east side to the bisected pennisula is the proposed Athletes Village . The westside is a large sewage treatment plant with circular sestpools full of Glasgow poop. ROTFLMAO

Yeah welcome to the athletes village hears the gas mask when the wind blow west to east LOL. i am totally serious that is the athletes friendly games Glasgow proposes. Abuja a 100 hect acre site out of the city limits halfway to the airport and no bodies of water like a river running thru a city of 15 million or an sewage treatment Plants.

Nigeria: Sewage Burst Pervades Asokoro

Asokoro, the high-brow district has been witnessing what a close observer described "as most heinous environmental pollution of recent times".

A visit to the area by our correspondent shows that many sewage pipes have burst of recent, thereby exposing the residents of the area to health hazards.

Particularly hit, our findings revealed, are those living within the end of ECOWAS secretariat by Yakubu Gowon street.

Most of the residents LEADERSHIP spoke with decried the non-chalant attitude of Abuja Environmental Protection Board whose duty it is to maintain environmental cleanliness in the city.

They said that despite various complaints to the environmental board on the burst sewage pipes, it has not done anything to arrest the situation.

http://allafrica.com/stories/200710240324.html

The Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) has warned residents in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to desist from dumping refuse in the sewage.

In a statement from an official of the Liquid Waste Management Department of the board, Mr Kenneth Okafor, said that residents in FCT should desist from doing so to avoid blockage of the sewages.

He stated that refuse and other solid waste dumped in the sewage is responsible for the problems of blocked sewages in the FCT.

According to him, the engineering department of AEPB is trying to address the issue of blocked sewages in the capital territory.

However, the residents of FCT had complained of blocked sewages which led to a terrible stench in and around the environment.

Abuja's big plans have little room for the poor

Nigerian capital tries for world-class look by razing its slums

But these days the deepest cleavage in Nigerian society yawns wider here than it does almost anywhere else — the chasm between the tiny, rich and powerful elite and the vast, impoverished majority of the nation's 130 million people.

"They don't want to see the common man, the poor man," said Comrade Daniel, a motorcycle-taxi driver, standing in the rubble of his neighborhood. He lost first his home and then his livelihood to a recent campaign to rid this stately capital of the blemishes of poverty. "They only care for themselves," he said.

Daniel and others who live on the unruly edge of this tidy city in the mossy hills of central Nigeria say that Abuja has declared war on its poorest citizens.

In the interest of cultivating an image of a world-class city, comparable to London, Paris, New York or Hong Kong, the government has been razing unauthorized and unsightly slums, clearing out street hawkers and banishing popular and cheap motorcycle taxis, all in the name of spiffing up the city.

Abuja is a planned city, originally designed by a group of American firms in the 1970s. It was meant to present an orderly gloss on Nigeria's vibrant but chaotic reputation. No place represents that image more fully than Lagos, the former capital, with its legendary go- slows — or traffic jams — jumbles of shacks next to office towers, and streets overflowing with garbage and sewage.

Abuja, by contrast, was to have none of those problems. The master plan would ensure that Abuja would be a tranquil oasis in the center of a cacophonous, polyglot nation.

I could go on.

Green - Parkland

Yellow - treatment plant

Blue - East End Regeneration route (major road project)

Pink - M74 (major road project)

As you can see, the sewage treatment plant has no bearing on the Athletes Village, nor will it be seen by anyone travelling by road or rail. Of course, spectators and athletes travelling by helicopter will most probably catch a glimpse.

With that chaos going on at next-door Pakistan right now, the thought of having the 2010 Commonwealth Games moved or canceled seems to have increased a bit. The closest I have known about hosting a Games so close to a "potential war zone" was Seoul 1988 because of where the capital city of South Korea was and still is.

Oh, FGS, Guard, it's still 3 years away. Well, 1988 and 2002 weren't cancelled despite saber-rattling by the North. I think Delhi is safe enough within India's borders for them to secure it. Plus, the 1982 Games in Delhi went off without a hitch.
