It would be cool if it was some that's unique to Canada and has never been seen before, like a moose. I would make it myself, but i have no artistic talent at all, so anybody that can draw, you can steel my idea. actually, please steel it.

I'm praying for god sake they don't use again the inukshuk :(

Hope they choose something that represents well Canada or the north. I doubt that they use a bear (see Calgary 88). I would like the mascot would be a racoon or a beaver (and this time, a GOOD design of the mascot & not a crappy torino-like ones).

Oh, & the deadline for the mascot contest is on november 2006. The mascot will be released at 2007 (i predict it will be at February 12, the day of the opening ceremony on 2006)

I think the mascot should be the Spirit Bear. It really represents BC and creates awarness that there are these animals such as the spirit bear that need protecting.

the probability is quite high that it will be the Spirit Bear.

I agree. The spirit bear is perfect to be the mascot. But as i said above, Calgary 88 had bears as their mascots (Hidy & Howdy). Besides, one of the mascots of SLC 2002 was a bear too (along with a hare & a coyote). Had a little error on my post. I forgot that Montreal 76 already used a Beaver.

I don't know about you guys, but i think that some people would say that using a bear again is a little boring and monotone.

VANOC must innovate with something new, but GOOD & ACCEPTABLE (not some cr@p like the late mascots except, maybe, for the Friendlies). I put all my hopes on Vancouver mascot so they could bring a new gold era of olympic mascots (like the 80's mascots: Misha, Hodori, Cobi...)

There must be some other popular animals beside the Spirit Bear on British Columbia. Does somebody know one?

It doesn't have to be an animal, but here are the ones that seem to most represent Canada: Beavers, moose, bears (black, brown, polar, grizzly), Canada geese, Snowy owls, lobsters, racoons, harp seals, salmon, orcas and others.

The Spirit Bear is a great choice because it's an endangered species. Having it as the mascot would be a great way to promote the few numbers still existing, even though if past mascots have been bears.

Other possible mascots....the Vancouver Island Marmot, Grizzly Bear, Black Bear, raccoon (tens of thousands in the city), coyote (hundreds in the city), and the Orca.

of course, i'm kidding about the racoon and coyote.

And, what about a Mammoth as mascot?

It has never been used as Olympic mascot, and i think that it would represent perfectly the cold mountains of Canada. It an extinguished animal with an strong and imposing appearance.

I have drawn only an idea (very quickly :D )

I don't know if they'd consider using a moose or salmon trout as possible mascots. This is a rather dumb idea, but I'm just throwing it out there.

More than likely there will be more than one mascot, with at least one male and one female.

Yay for Spirit Bear!

Umm.

If they HAVE to do a multiple mascot thing, AGAIN, I would suggest a passle of birds to go with the bear. Including a raven, which is very important to local BC heritage. And maybe nifty colouring. Like make the bear minty green (and sparkling!). And the birds purple etc. Change it up a bit. Fresh, clean, and child friendly.

Mascot Information from PacificMetropolis

According to this article from last weekend's Sun, the 2010 Vancouver Olympics mascot will be unveiled sometime later this year - possibly by the summer, but most likely in the fall.

Apparently, it's 'always supposed to be [a] cuddly, kid-friendly' emblem, which event organizers will subsequently begin to market like hell.

Let's hope that we do better than past Olympics' mascots like the Montreal Games' Amik the Beaver (above), or the memorable Sydney Games' Syd the Platypus, Millie the Echidna, and Olly the Kookaburra.

As for the 2008 Beijing Games, you can have a look at their five mascots here - Hello Kitty meets the Troll Dolls.

With this dismal history in mind, we have rather low expectations for Vancouver's mascot, despite the fact that our Inukshuk logo (and related merchandising) turned out surprisingly well.

So, among the obvious choices of cuddly creatures that are emblematic of the British Columbia region, which one do you think will wind up being Vancouver's mascot?

* An orca whale

* A grizzly bear

* A sockeye salmon

* A 'huggable homeless' person

* Pamela Anderson
