UEFA reduces England striker Wayne Rooney’s Euro 2012 ban to 2, clearing him to face Ukraine

NYON, Switzerland — Wayne Rooney was cleared to play in England’s final group match at next year’s European Championship following UEFA’s decision Thursday to reduce his three-match ban to two.

UEFA’s appeals panel deferred the final match of the England striker’s three-match suspension on condition of his good behavior for four years.

He will be eligible when England plays Euro 2012 co-host Ukraine in Donetsk on June 19, but remains banned for England’s games against France and Sweden.

13 of 16 Euro 2012 teams pick Poland over Ukraine

WARSAW — An overwhelming 13 of the 16 teams qualified for Euro 2012 have opted for base-camps in Poland, tournament organisers said Monday, leaving fellow-host Ukraine virtually out in the cold.

"It's a fact that 13 teams have chosen Poland as their base for the duration for the European Championships," Adam Olkowicz, boss of the country's organising committee, said at a ceremony after a deadline expired for picking training locations.

Despite the fact that eight teams will play their group-stage matches in each host country, only three will set up shop in Ukraine -- the Ukrainians themselves, plus France and Sweden.

In contrast, Germany have picked the northern Polish city of Gdansk as their base-camp, even though that means shuttling back and forth to the Ukrainian cities of Lviv and Kharkiv, which lie a respective 750 kilometres and 1,600 kilometres away.

Holland, who will play their games in the same locations, have meanwhile picked Krakow in southern Poland for their camp.

The choice of Krakow has been echoed by England, who will be playing in the Ukrainian capital Kiev, 870 kilometres away, and the eastern city of Donetsk, almost 1,600 kilometres from their camp.

The other teams playing in Ukraine but based in Poland are Denmark and Portugal.

Those both playing and staying in Poland are the Poles, plus Croatia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Russia, and reining champions Spain.

Euro 2012 is the first-ever edition of the quadrennial championships behind the former Iron Curtain, in a region where infrastructure challenges outweigh anything in previous Western European host nations.

The issue of accommodation for teams, officials and fans alike has been a hot topic, with Ukraine in the spotlight due concerns over skyrocketing prices and a scarcity of rooms for supporters.

While scooping the lion's share of training camps is a clear thumbs up for Poland, organisers here have been anxious not to play up the subject at the expense of their Ukrainian neighbours.

"The issue was what are the best sites for the teams, the places their football associations were happy with," said Tomasz Szulc, head of the Polish organising committee's base-camp division.

"It didn't depend if these were in Poland or Ukraine. What mattered was providing the best conditions possible," he added.

European football's governing body UEFA has also sought to minimise the issue, previously underlining that while it presented a list of accredited potential base-camp locations in both countries, teams were free to go where they liked.

Well as much as i feel sorry for the Ukraine governement, you can't blame federations for picking Poland when Ukraine provided worse, more expensive and with less equipement for training, hotels.

It's just logical to go for a hotel farther but with a park, a pool or some woods near theam and better facilities. And besides it's not like football players aren't used to take a plane or a bus before a match.

Progress report: 100 days to go

The countdown to UEFA EURO 2012 reaches a new milestone as Wednesday marks 100 days until co-hosts Poland and 2004 winners Greece get the tournament under way in Warsaw. While all 16 finalist teams will be in action on the field of play tonight, UEFA.com finds out how preparations are progressing off it.

Tickets

Supporters of the 16 participating teams have a matter of hours to book their place at UEFA EURO 2012 before ticket sales close at midnight CET on Friday. Customers can resell their EURO tickets at face value and on a first come, first served basis through the official UEFA EURO 2012 ticket resale platform until 12 April.

Venues

• Poland: The last venue to be completed, the National Stadium Warsaw, opened its doors on 29 January when it hosted a small music festival. The first football match will be played there tonight as Poland entertain Portugal in front of a sell-out crowd. The arena will stage the opening game of UEFA EURO 2012 between Poland and Greece on 8 June.

• Ukraine: Kharkiv's spider-like Metalist Stadium and the ultra-modern Donbass Arena opened in 2009, while the new Arena Lviv and Kyiv's revamped Olympic Stadium were unveiled in time to hold Ukraine friendlies in November. The capital's 60,000-seater arena, setting for the UEFA EURO 2012 final, will host its first Premier League match on Sunday, the derby between FC Dynamo Kyiv and FC Arsenal Kyiv.

Infrastructure

• Poland: A new terminal will be inaugurated at Wroclaw airport on Wednesday, while in Warsaw 120 low-floor trams, which will transport fans around the capital this summer, are already in operation. Elsewhere, the finishing touches are being applied to the road and rail networks, with a train line from Warsaw airport to the city centre set to be ready in late May.

• Ukraine: The country's road and rail networks have both been upgraded and airports serving all four venues have undergone major changes, with modern terminals, longer runways and new control towers either in operation or, in the case of Kyiv and Donetsk, imminent. There has been significant investment in hotels in the capital since April 2007, when UEFA EURO 2012 was awarded to Poland and Ukraine

Goethe, you are always so pessimistic about the prospects of German endeavours... I think Germany will win two of the three group matches (the third one, either against Portugal or Netherlands being a draw or a narrow defeat) and will advance at least to the semifinals. A final against Spain would be a great, and this time around with another result than 2008 and 2010 of course. ;)

Roy Hodgson appointed England manager by FA

Roy Hodgson has been appointed England manager on a four-year contract.

The West Brom boss succeeds Fabio Capello after talks with the Football Association on Monday and Tuesday.

He will remain in charge of the Baggies for their last two games of the Premier League season.

The 64-year-old will lead his country after managing 18 teams, including three national sides, during a coaching career spanning 36 years.

"Let's hope we can get everybody behind us and make certain that we work as a team and help the team get the results everyone in England expects and wants," said Hodgson.

Hodgson's contract at West Brom runs out on 30 June but the Premier League club said they have agreed to release him after their final game of the season on 13 May so he can prepare for Euro 2012.

England have two friendlies, at Norway on 26 May and home to Belgium on 2 June, before their first match in the tournament in Poland and Ukraine against France on 11 June.

The Football Association said in a statement it was "delighted" to announce the appointment of Hodgson, whose contract also covers the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016.

Lets not forgot who was on the pitch between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. 9 Germans at once. Something that is generally unheard-of in European play. Germany has usually been the team without stars, now they have so much talent. Neuer is probably the best keeper in the world right now.

Group A

1. Russia, 2 wins and a draw

2. Czech Republic 1 win, 1 draw, 1 lose

3. Poland 1 win, 1 draw, 1 lose

4. Greece 0 wins, 1 draw, 2 loses

Group B

1. Germany, 3 wins, they just have more overall talent and depth then the Dutch or the Portuguese.

2. Netherlands, 2 wins, 1 lose

3. Portugal, 1 draw, 2 loses

4. Denmark, 1 draw, 2 loses

Group C

1. Spain, 2 wins, 1 draw

2. Croatia, 1 win, 2 draws

3. Italy, 1 win, 1 draws, 1 lose

4. Ireland, 3 loses

Group D

1. France, 1 win, 2 draws

2. England, 1 win, 2 draws

3. Sweden, 3 draws

4. Ukraine, 1 draw, 2 loses

Netherlands beats Russia

Spain beats England

Germany beats Czech Republic

France beats Croatia

Netherlands beats Spain

Germany beats France

Germany wins the title.

Ukraine's images takes a beating as Euro football nears

It was never meant to be like this. When Ukraine was named co-host of Europe's biggest soccer feast in 2009, its leaders hailed the award as a milestone on the road to joining the European mainstream.

A delighted Yulia Tymoshenko, then prime minister, told her compatriots her government had scraped together "every kopeck" to make the dream possible.

Her jubilant tone foresaw the former Soviet republic turning a confident, smiling face to the world in the month-long Euro-2012 soccer tournament which it will co-host with Poland, its cheer-leader in Europe.

That was in December 2009.

Now, with the first games to be played in Ukraine on June 9, Tymoshenko lies in prison on hunger strike, nursing bruises after what she said was a beating by prison guards. Images of her show her trademark peasant braids lying in a forlorn tress across her shoulder.

Western leaders, some of whose national teams will compete in Euro-2012, have reacted with horror.

Led by Germany, leaders of several European Union countries have called off scheduled visits to Ukraine in protest at the treatment meted out by President Viktor Yanukovich's leadership.

Amid talk of a possible boycott of the June 8 ceremonial opening by European politicians, Ukraine has accused of European powers of resorting to Cold War tactics.

A series of mystery bomb blasts in the city of Dnipropetrovsk last week which injured 30 people have raised security concerns.

The government says they were organised by forces out to destabilise the nation. Identikits of suspects have been issued but there have been no arrests.

The opposition has hinted darkly that the bombs could be the work of authorities and law enforcement bodies with the aim of diverting attention from the Tymoshenko affair.

The trial and sentencing of Tymoshenko to seven years in jail for alleged abuse of power has already cost Ukraine a landmark political agreement with the European Union. Its signing has been put on indefinite hold.

It has even put Yanukovich off-side with his country's big neighbour and former Soviet master, Russia. President Dmitry Medvedev just last week said: "The persecution of political opponents (in Ukraine) is absolutely unacceptable."
