Spain has added its name to a growing list of European Governments which have threatened a boycott of this summer's UEFA European Championship in protest at Ukraine's human rights record.

Spain is the defending champion and among the favourites to win the tournament, but Foreign Minister José Manuel Garcia-Margallo (pictured below) warned the country's politicians would refuse travel unless Ukraine resolved the case of jailed former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko (pictured top, in poster).

"If Spain gets through to the final, there will be no member of the Government present while the case of Yulia Tymoshenko is unresolved," Garcia-Margallo said in an interview published yesterday.

Lets not forgot who was on the pitch between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. 9 Germans at once. Something that is generally unheard-of in European play. Germany has usually been the team without stars, now they have so much talent. Neuer is probably the best keeper in the world right now.

Group A

1. Russia, 2 wins and a draw

2. Czech Republic 1 win, 1 draw, 1 lose

3. Poland 1 win, 1 draw, 1 lose

4. Greece 0 wins, 1 draw, 2 loses

Group B

1. Germany, 3 wins, they just have more overall talent and depth then the Dutch or the Portuguese.

2. Netherlands, 2 wins, 1 lose

3. Portugal, 1 draw, 2 loses

4. Denmark, 1 draw, 2 loses

Group C

1. Spain, 2 wins, 1 draw

2. Croatia, 1 win, 2 draws

3. Italy, 1 win, 1 draws, 1 lose

4. Ireland, 3 loses

Group D

1. France, 1 win, 2 draws

2. England, 1 win, 2 draws

3. Sweden, 3 draws

4. Ukraine, 1 draw, 2 loses

Netherlands beats Russia

Spain beats England

Germany beats Czech Republic

France beats Croatia

Netherlands beats Spain

Germany beats France

Germany wins the title.

Wishful thinking by a distance

Though it's sad that they're using once again a sport event as a tool to promote moves against a goverment (although what they did to Timoshenko was BS and the current goverment are no saints, in fact) , i'm excited to see what will happen on this Euro. Here's hoping Spain wins it's third title. :)

Hodgson names final England squad

Roy Hodgson has submitted his final 23-man squad for England's UEFA EURO 2012 campaign, with Liverpool forward Andy Carroll handed the No9 shirt.

There are no late surprises as Scott Parker, Danny Welbeck and Glen Johnson retained their places despite recent injury scares.

And Carroll, who struggled for large periods with Liverpool this season before rediscovering some form towards the back end of the season, was given the much sought-after jersey.

It is not the first time Carroll has been handed a significant No9, with tall striker impressing for Newcastle United for the first half of the 2010/11 season wearing the iconic shirt.

Gareth Barry was yesterday ruled out of the tournament in Poland and Ukraine after suffering a tear to his lower abdomen in the 1-0 friendly win against Norway over the weekend.

Everton defender Phil Jagielka was called up as his replacement after manager Roy Hodgson said he would "reconfigure" his squad should the Manchester City midfielder miss out.

John Ruddy was the only other casualty, the Norwich City goalkeeper, who would have been third choice at the championship, ruled out due to a broken finger and replaced by Birmingham City rookie Jack Butland.

Parker (Achilles), Welbeck (ankle) and Johnson (toe) had been doubts but it seems those problems have cleared up and they will report for duty at England's Watford base today.

England squad for EURO 2012:

1 Hart, 2 Johnson, 3 Cole, 4 Gerrard, 5 Cahill, 6 Terry, 7 Walcott, 8 Lampard, 9 Carroll, 10 Rooney, 11 Young, 12 Baines, 13 Green, 14 Jones, 15 Lescott, 16 Milner, 17 Parker, 18 Jagielka, 19 Downing, 20 Oxlade-Chamberlain, 21 Defoe, 22 Welbeck, 23 Butland.

EURO opening ceremony to set magical tone

UEFA has released details of the UEFA EURO 2012 opening ceremony at the National Stadium in Warsaw on 8 June.

The performance will start 20 minutes before kick-off of the tournament's opening match between Poland and Greece. It will offer a fitting curtain-raiser to three weeks of a celebration of national team football in Poland and Ukraine.

The concept for the UEFA EURO 2012 opening ceremony has been developed by Marco Balich, Olympic Producer and president of events and ceremonies company Filmmaster Events. Balich created the opening and closing ceremonies of the Turin Olympics in 2006 and is also known in Ukraine, having produced the opening ceremony of the Donbass Arena in Donetsk in 2009.

The 12-minute show will combine heritage and innovation, to bring sport and culture together and mark the start of a historical event, the first UEFA European Football Championship to be staged in central and eastern Europe. It will also promote the participating nations together with key EURO values: unity, rivalry and passion.

Renowned Hungarian classical pianist Adam Gyorgy, who recently celebrated his 30th birthday with a sold out concert at New York City's Carnegie Hall, will perform a Chopin Étude in a minor (Op.25 Nr.11) as part of the ceremony, to bring the pure classical tradition of Chopin into a sport environment. Gyorgy is no stranger to football, being a major fan himself, and playing as part of his daily routine. He was previously involved with the Hungarian national futsal set-up.

The opening ceremony will include mass choreographies involving more than 800 volunteer performers, coming from as many as 63 countries around the world. More than 150 million live viewers are expected to watch the opening match and its ceremony.

^^ Damn, I was just about to post that here  . Those ceremonies usually aren't the biggest things, but this one is being made by the guy behind the Rio 2016 handover this August so i'm interested to see it.

Though i'm not sure what Chopin has to do with Ukraine or Poland :P

Anywho, Spain has just beaten South Korea 4-1 on a friendly match in preparation for the Euro 2012. Del Bosque says Torres is on his best moment and that his "euphoria" must be put for a good use at the Euro.

Del Bosque: "Torres is elated and we must take advantage"

http://www.marca.com/2012/05/30/futbol/eurocopa_2012/espana/1338412013.html

Vicente del Bosque, Spanish coach, said the reunion with a goal from Fernando Torres a year later with Spain in the win over South Korea (4-1), and admitted that Chelsea striker is "euphoric" and should be utilized in Euro 2012.

"It's the players that we have to provide that speed and uncheck, always ready to receive people back that is well associated. Its top speed is in good time and is very happy to be here. It elated and we must take advantage of the moment and good living conditions in which we have all come to the finals, "he said at a news conference.

He also talked about the absence of captain Iker Casillas, who left his room for Pepe Reina, who has played 25 games in goal with Spain. "We have to be among the six changes, a place to go to increase their numbers in terms of caps. Did not think about records, but the number of caps. It is a privilege with a player who has helped us be where we are in the world stage, "he said.

Also questioned by Etxebarria Beñat options to replace Cesc Fabregas if Barcelona's no time to recover from a hamstring injury, praised the work of Betis player.

"We hope Fabregas are ready when you arrive. We have to wait and there is time to go. The expectation is that going to be. Beñat confirms his qualities as all who have come. It has adapted well to our game and set the pace of the game, "he said.

Regarding the game against South Korea, recognized that a rival was "difficult and uncomfortable" in the first half and added that he "sang" after scoring his first goal.

"They have retracted it, fought with danger in a good first half. In the second, opened wider and the goals and penalty-kick opened up the difference," he said.

I beginning to think France will be the darkhorse potential winner. Every major tournament I have watched has had a team that has struggled going into the tournament find form and a long run at the championship (Germany/Brazil, Greece, Germany/France, Spain, Netherlands).
