I am extremely disappointed of seeing Squash has no chance for 2016...

No more 500m events in men's Canoeing/Kayaking (they are now all 200m events), Mixed Doubles will be re-considered, and it looks like there will only be new swimming events if old ones are eliminated (there has been some talk of scraping the women's 800m freestyle to replace it whit a 1500m race). It also looks like there will be 3 new Women's weight classes in Wrestling if FILA is willing to reduce the number of male athletes by about 60.

Mixed doubles in tennis could also be part of the Olympic Programme, they will decide it in December.

I believe it will be accepted if the ITF does not require additional quotas for it. Seriously, tough, can you think of a better Olympics to bring back an additional Tennis event? Something tells me that I will be watching quite a bit more Tennis in London that in Beijing...

Does non-mixed doubles events require many more additional quotas than singles events? I think mixed doubles will be in London.

If my memory is correct I believe the current quota for Tennis is 176 athletes (so 88 men and 88 women). The single tournaments are 64 players and the doubles tournaments are 32 teams, so they are 24 doubles only athletes per gender. But since all doubles teams are selected by the ITF (except the teams of the top-10 ranked doubles players in the world) it would be relatively easy to make up 16 mixed doubles teams without changing the quotas, seeing that most of the worlds best doubles specialists are already there (I seriously doubt that there are that many mixed doubles specialists in Tennis the same way you see it in Badminton).

The results of the secret voting made this morning by the IOC EB have already been published. Here they are (a majority of 8 was needed):

Election of the 1st sport:

1st round:

· Baseball - 2

· Golf - 1

· Karate - 3

· Roller sports - 0

· Rugby - 7

· Softball - 1

· Squash - 0

2nd round:

· Baseball - 1

· Golf - 1

· Karate - 1

· Rugby - 9

· Softball - 2

Election of the 2nd sport:

1st round:

· Baseball - 2

· Golf - 3

· Karate - 5

· Roller Sports - 1

· Roller Sports - 4

Highly pleased with Rugby 7s - and in the end a very easy win for it. Not fussed either way with Golf. I suppose at the end of the day these were the two sports easiest to accomodate venue-wise. R7s can always use the main stadium between OC and atheletics (or a regular square ground), and golf? Well, I guess just about any city bidding for the games seriously would always have a course.

With a simple majority, I'd assume approval is now more of a rubber stamp.

Pity they couldn't be in time for London. 7s at Twickenham, and maybe even special dispensation for golf at St Andrews (yeah, I know it's a long way away, but it IS the home of golf) would have been fitting.

Women's K1-200m replaces the men's C2-500m, while the remaining men's 500m events (not sure if its just Canoeing or Canoeing and Kayaking) are to be replaced by 200m events. Thats about it, although it is looking good for mixed doubles in Tennis.

I cant be bothered reading the past few pages - so just to summarise only Rugby and Golf will be considered for 2016? The other 5 are gone? If so - hmm, no surprise there. Golf is easy to stage - every major city has a decent golf course - just throw up some stands - it would be like cross country in equestrian. Rugby 7s could easily be staged at a football venue.

Dammit - the IOC may have used some logic here.

BTW - apart from women's boxing, did any of the other existing sports/new disciplines get through?

The changes approved by the Executive Board include the following:

Women’s Boxing

The EB agreed to the introduction of three women’s events. The current 11 men’s boxing events will be replaced by 10 men’s and three women’s events, representing an additional two boxing events on the programme. The total number of boxers remains unchanged. The decision was a recognition that women’s boxing has made substantial progress in universality and technical quality of the athletes since the EB last considered the discipline in 2005.

Canoe Sprint

The EB agreed to the request made by the International Canoe Federation (ICF) for the replacement of men’s C2 500m with women’s K1 200m. The EB also agreed to replace the remaining three men’s 500m sprint events with 200m sprint events.

Modern Pentathlon

The EB agreed to the implementation of a new combined run-shoot format.

Handball

The removal of placement matches in the handball tournament was agreed.

Wrestling, Swimming, Cycling

The three Federations (FILA, FINA, and UCI respectively) submitted requests for new events. The EB informed them that this could happen, especially if the new events increase the participation of women at the Games and on condition that they replace events already on the programme. Additionally, current events can be replaced with new ones only if the total number of athletes is maintained.

Tennis – Mixed Doubles

Furthermore, the EB agreed to consider the inclusion of a mixed doubles event pending guarantees from the International Tennis Federation that the top players in the singles rankings would be able to participate.

The EB will make a decision on the issue at its December meeting in Lausanne.
