arwebb
Perhaps. But, there are other nations in this process bidding for a second hosting and I thik the Spanish bid, whichever city they put forward is bound to be strong.
Mikel
And maybe the Catalans are not as greedy as the Castillians or the Andalusians. I mean Barcelona knew when to stop. For a middling T&F power, wasn't Sevilla enough? I mean what are the Spanish trying to prove? They're not winning any more T&F races; so what...? Göteborg hosted the IAAF championships in 1995, the European championships two weeks ago and want the World championships again in 2011. PS. Want it or not, Moscow, Madrid/Valencia and Brisbane will be the ones to beat.

Aronious
With hope, the Queensland Atheltics Stadium will be demolished and a new site chosen. Maybe something closer to Southport and the Gold Coast. Maybe a capacity of 50,000 for athletics, then downgraded and reconfigured for rugby league (30,000) after the event... ala Stadium Australia. Sir Rols
Looks like daegu is starting to firm as a contender: DAEGU, South Korea, Sept 29, 2006 (AFP) - Brisbane's status as favourites to secure the 2011 World Championships has taken a knock after two senior International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) officials talked up the chances of South Korean city Daegu. Casablanca, Moscow, Split and Valencia are also in the running with a decision on the venue due to be made by athletics' world governing body in Mombasa in March. But the successful hosting of an international invitational meet here on Thursday appears to have boosted Daegu's chances. IAAF Vice President Amadeo I.D. Francis said the organisation also owed a debt of gratitude to South Korean member Rocky Park for dropping a bid for the 2007 championships to help ensure the meeting went to Osaka. He said: ``Mr Rocky Park has been working very hard to get Korea considered to host the World Championships,'' Francis said. ``He withheld Korea's 2007 bid because he understood that we had a commitment to Japan and now we have a commitment to him and to Korea.'' The vice-president was among a number of influential figures within the IAAF who were present as nearly 50,000 people turned out to watch world record holders such as China's 110m hurdler Liu Xiang and Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbaeva. The IAAF's International Technical Officer Cesar Moreno Bravo said Daegu's experience and facilities made them favourite to win the vote. ``The two strongest bids are Daegu and Brisbane and Daegu's chances are very good,'' Bravo said. ``Its stadium is not just impressive but very modern and it has the best facilities for the athletes. It is building a village for the athletes close to the stadium and that is a huge advantage. ``Daegu is bidding for the Championships for the first time and for this city to host them will benefit not just Daegu or even Korea but the whole of Asia. ``Daegu is stressing its values for sport and the benefit for the athletes and for the Championships is bigger if they go to Daegu than anywhere else.'' Sir Rols
Just an update on the latest on Brisbane's bid: BRISBANE, Nov 13 AAP - Queensland Premier Peter Beattie has met with the head of the international athletics governing body to promote Brisbane's bid for the 2011 World Athletics Championships. Mr Beattie met with International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) president Lamine Diack in Monaco yesterday in a bid to lure the event to the southern hemisphere for the first time. The Championships rank as the third largest sporting event in the world, behind The FIFA World Cup and the Olympics. Mr Beattie was hopeful of Brisbane's chances against bids from Spain, South Korea, Morocco, Russia, Sweden, United Arab Emirates and the United States of America. ``It would be an incredible coup for Brisbane to win the right to host this event and we'll be giving it our best shot,'' Mr Beattie said in a statement. ``Brisbane is a safe environment and our climate is outstanding. We're definitely in the running.'' If the bid is successful, the championships are expected to attract 500,000 spectators and thousands of competitors. Queensland Events Corporation and Athletics Australia are currently preparing the bid which is due to be lodged by the end of the month. The winning bid is expected to be announced early next year.
