Cape Town plans to welcome the world expo

Cape Town - The mayor of Cape Town, Helen Zille, announced today in a speech to local parliament, that Cape Town plans to bid for the World Expo in 2020. The announcement came as a suprise to many members of parliament who assumed that the announcement would be that of a possible olympic bid in 2020. Zille, outlined the proposed real benefits such an expo would add to the city and the country as a whole, ecnomically and otherwise.

Plans for the bid have not yet been discussed but a two-week study was set to begin at the end of the month to consider various proposals and to identify possible sites for the event which takes place over close to 200 days.

Zille said the concept is set to be finalised soon and could include the new gateway and base to antartica being built in Cape Town, the success of the use of Wind Energy in the city, the floral kingdom and the new space station currently under construction.

"Plans have certainly not been finalized yet, but certain succesful key projects in the city stand out and it would be best to include these. The World Expo needs to come to Africa and 2020 is the time."

The 2005 event was held in Aichi, Japan with the 2010 event set for Shanghai.

Cape Town selects Robben Island as expo site

The city of Cape Town has come to a consensus that the World Heritage Site, Robben Island, will be used as the main site to host the world expo in 2020. The selection of the site will result in an environmentally friendly rail shuttle and green mobile road service to the island, which would connect the city to the Greenpoint Sports Precinct. A private airport development is planned for the current airstrip while special attention will be given to the preservation and integration of important landmarks and historically important areas.

The Expo theme has yet to be released and is expected to be finalised over the coming weeks.
