GM Canada joins Vancouver 2010 Winter Games team as Official Vehicle Partner

Broad range of hybrid, biodiesel and alternative fuel GM vehicles to be used for 2010 Games

The eight-year partnership provides GM Canada with sponsorship rights for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, including sponsorship rights for the Canadian Olympic Team for the Torino 2006, Beijing 2008, Vancouver 2010 and London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. GM Canada's commitment includes $53 million in-kind for vehicles, services and marketing support and $14 million cash including investments in sport initiatives such as the Own the Podium - 2010 program that helps Canadian athletes gain the necessary resources to achieve success in 2010.

Vancouver 2010 is committed to the use of the latest environmental practices for the Games, including sustainable transportation innovation.  A key element of GM Canada's sponsorship is a commitment to ensure that 30 per cent of the vehicle fleet used by organizers and volunteers leading up to and during the 2010 Winter Games will run on hybrid or alternative fuel technologies such as biodiesel. GM Canada's fleet of fuel efficient, low-emission 2010 Games vehicles will include sedans, passenger vans, SUVs and trucks from the Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, GMC, Cadillac and Saturn brands.  GM vehicles have won more Canadian EnerGuide fuel efficiency awards than any other automotive manufacturer.

"This major commitment is a natural extension of GM Canada's long history of supporting Canadian athletes, from novice hockey players experiencing the sport for the first time to elite alpine skiers competing at the international level," said Michael Grimaldi, president of GM Canada.  "We look forward to supporting VANOC with a fleet of high-quality cars and trucks, a commitment to environmental sustainability and a 60,000-strong team of employees, dealers and retailers who are eager to help Canada win gold."

"Today, the 2010 Winter Games team grew by another 60,000 people as we welcome GM Canada and its network of dealers and retailers to our family of partners," said John Furlong, VANOC CEO.  "GM Canada's tremendous commitment to supporting winter sports and athletes in this country combined with an impressive commitment to building environmentally sustainable vehicles makes them an ideal partner for the 2010 Winter Games.  These will be 'Canada's Games' and General Motors also offers the breadth of reach that we are looking for to provide all Canadians with a chance to experience the Games, no matter where they live."

Ken Read, President Alpine Canada Alpin said, "GM has been there to support athletes for many years through the Pontiac GMC Cup and sponsorship of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team, so it is a natural progression for GM be a major supporter of Canadian Olympians and Paralympians and the 2010 Games."

In a related story though, becuase of the IOC's prohibition of advertisement inside, outside, and above Olympic facilities, the General Motors Place, like the Salt Lake City's Delta Center before it, will have to temporarily ditch its corporate name for the duration of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. Could it be called the Vancouver Ice Arena?

That is one of the most hypocritical things about the IOC.  They'll gladly take your $60 zillion corporate bucks, but WON'T let you plaster your name over the venues.  Thank God, I've never been the CEO of a firm because I surely wouldn't fall for that IOC crap-line.
