There are already clips of the Tokyo 1964 opening ceremony on YouTube, but this one is special: It seems to be from the original live broadcast of Japanese television -- in colour! This was probably the first colour broadcast of an Olympic opening ceremony ever.

Actually, Tokyo was the first color Olympic broadcasts...but it was just for their domestic market. It was the newly developed Japanese color system by Toshiba. The color signal did not go out on the international feeds.

Thanks for the clip, Fab.

Oh, and notice the flag of Greece. It was still the old one.

Also, when the Japanese national anthem is played, does anybody recognize the strange flag to the right?

Here's a good series: the whole lighting ceremony at old Olympia

It's in 5 parts; starts with The Procession. Too bad, the commentary is in Greek. (Maybe Savas can give us an English translation??)

Interesting but kinda drawn out. So what those priestesses did at the Sydney Closing is a condensed version of their doings in this series.

This is the lighting for Beijing...so 24 March 2008.

Finally watched most of the Chinese National games above (which BTW is much better labelled than the series wingspread put up on the other post). Some sequences are AWESOME...like those birds and blossoms that float in the air. But overall, it's just too much; and the lighting doesn't create too many dramatic moods but which the Beijing show did very well.

Christos, thanx for this.

However, I have a question: What was the point of lighting a cauldron at the Panathinaiko stadium if the runner will just then depart for its relay to Moscow? So that cauldron at the Panathinaiko will just burn out? Or did they douse it at some time?

Guardian, thank you for putting also the Beijing OC online -- but I can't view already the first ceremonial clip (with the Fou drums). Due to copyright restrictions, the clip isn't available in my country. Maybe you could open an account on another video platform like Metacafé and post the clips there? Maybe the copyright restrictions aren't so strict there?

/\ That's a bad telecast. It's all over the place. You, as the viewer, aren't given a clear, cogent feel of the flow of the numbers. All you see are Vanessa-Mae and all those writhing figures in the bkgd. Are they skates or dry-land dancers? Y r they hopping about?

Really quite an amateurish take on this portion. I've seen the Josef Svoboda section; and it was much better than this.

Thanks, joe, for posting it just the same.

Excerpts from the 1999 All Africa Games opening ceremonies in Johanesburg, South Africa.

.

PD: These ceremonies were coreographed by Penny Jones (i heard they are going to work for the 2010 WC Ceremonies as well).

The field looks SO EMPTY in those Auckland 1990 Closing moments.

Yuuup, altough remember we're talking about 55 nations here (back in 1990), different thing compared to the olympics more than 200 nations)

Also, new jewel! A video with rehearsals of the 1984 Olympics Closing ceremony, which also includes excerpts from the actual Lionel Richie performance of his song ''All night long'' :lol:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGcnxhQs9to
