baron-pierreIV
And now, enjoy the sweet cheesyness of the 1984 olympics theme song ''Reach out and touch'' performed at the finale of the opening ceremony it may have seemed "Cheesy" but it set the right tone for those Games and made the smashing success they were even without the presence of the boring Soviets and their allies. And every Ceremony after that tried to top that 1984 edition. Also, Vicki McClure's gain was Diana Ross' loss.
mattygs
Just doing my office stuffs at work, so thought I'd pop in and drop you this link, also from the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony. It is the late Sir Howard Morrison's performance of *Tukua Ahau*. It is featured at the end of the main cultural performance section of the opening ceremony, choreographed by Mary Jane O'Reilly. It starts off pretty slow and low key, but persevere because it does pick up to a more rousing performance near the end, and also features some good shots of Mt Smart Stadium and their reasonably impressive (for the event and the time) staging area , aswell as some on field performance featuring members of the Pacifica segment. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5w-uyjaYcU

I NEVER Heard from you (I did spend specially for that..) nor from Logan-Brewster either. That "Tukua Ahau" song sounds so much "Blue Hawaii" ready to take off... Ikarus360
Finally, the parade of nations of probably the most freakish (but one of my faves) opening ceremonies: Albertville 1992. Each delegation was received with some kind of poem instead of just being named by the announcers. As seen on ABC Part 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPaIFWDw3ZI Part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIjyznITorA Part 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jFvQOT4YT4 Also, the flag entrance (Olympic hymn plz) and lightning of the cauldron by Michel Platini and some random kid (i remember there were a lot of this cauldron clones on the Albertville venues ) http://www.youtube.com/user/eusebius65#p/u/3/39F0dGqXWxY Last but not least, he Lillehammer 1994 arrival and lightning of the torch in a better quality vid, as seen on ABC (the only video we had before was from a Norway tv channel) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMGbnXHZYwQ
baron-pierreIV
Discovered this website of a multi-faceted Ceremonies designer who has worked on MANY Ceremonies. This guy, Steve Boyd, has worn many hats in these Ceremonies and this is one of the interesting and complete websites re behind-the-scene talents of Ceremonies. http://www.steveboydportfolio.com/03Jobs/Doha/10_Cauldron/CauldronLighting.html

Ikarus360
Holy crap! That site is pretty awesome, and they show us a lot of behind the scenes of Doha 2006 ceremonies (which were done by the same producers of Vancouver 2010 which we will watch on just a week). Thanks a lot Baron PD: Bad news, the Albertvile ceremonies were taken down from Youtube since the user account was suspended. I have a copy of these videos, so i'll probably reupload them again on the future for everyone

baron-pierreIV
Look at this clip from the Lake Placid 1932 Opening 78 years ago... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DM7Lki7R05A&NR=1 It all seemed so primitive, innocent and simple then. Dinhu4ever
What happened with all the B countries in the Albertville Parade of Nations? Were they cut from the broadcast due to a commercial break or anything like that? Aw, I was so eager to see my country march in the Winter Olympics for the 1st time! =/

mattperiolat
Incidentally, it was CBS who had the broadcast rights for Albertville, not ABC. Looking back, I wonder if this is a reason why I dislike the Alberville Games so much: bad coverage, bad play by play, bad organization of the Games, just... bad bad bad Olympics. Sir Rols
ABC = Australian Broadcasting Corporation? The accents sounded pretty aussie to me. I'm not sure which clip you're referring to, but I think lost of the recent ones were the American ABC. But, yes, there is an Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) as well. It's our state-run broadcasting network. But I can't remember the last time they broadcast an Olympics - if ever they have!
Dinhu4ever
Well, I've checked the names of the commentators in Ikarus360.Ken Sutcliffe is indeed Australian while Phil Liggett is british. Looking at the video, though, I can see that the station calling card reads NBN. So I guess the video comes from the NBN broadcast rather than a ABC broadcast? LuigiVercotti
Hi guys Just a note about the Albertville and Lillehammer footage which I added to YouTube (and hope that the forces of the wily old falangist Samaranch don't influence the Belgian rugger bugger to try and take the vids down). The Albertville footage was form a delayed telecast of the games originally seen in Australia on the Nine network. However where I was living at the time was serviced by NBN (a regional TV station based in Newcastle) had the broadcast networked through them. And yes, it was Kenny Sutcliffe and Phil Liggett on commentating duty. In those days Liggett was probably the only semi-local TV identity who could give some insight and cred on general winter Olympic sport. Thanks to the time constraints, delayed telecasting and general disinterest in winter sports at this time in Australia the footage was severely truncated. Hence the non-appearance of many teams in the athletes parade. As for Lillehammer, things had improved slightly in the 2 years (including better original video stock). The same broadcast deal was on, however to make thjings worse for Australians Liz hayes was brought in on commentating duty for 'fluff' pieces (e.g. ceremonies). There was a bit more interest thanks to the likes of Kirstie Marshall and the Aussie short track speed skaters (including a certain Steve Bradbury), so the coverage was a little better on the Nine network. Also IMHO the actual theatre of the ceremonies at Lillehammer made the French look like pretentious cheese eating surrender monkeys :P Just to let you folks know I am uploading more footage from the ceremonies, all sourced from Australian broadcasters since 1992), plus have some other Olympic related videos (including Greenspan's offical Sydney 2000 film)
