Why?

When I uploaded clips from the post-Olympic Flame entertainment from the Atlanta 1996 closing ceremony, someone did not like it at all. YouTube deleted one of my clips forcefully without my knowledge. After that, I got a warning. Hence, I got rid of all of that and the so-called controversy came to be. When the Flame goes out, some entertainers claim that any performances after it is not part of the Olympic Games and is subjected to warnings or them laying criminal charges for uploading their performances on YouTube without their consent against the uploader.

Even though others have uploaded their "same" performance in a different setting other than the Olympic Games, it seems that they get away from the YouTube censors in this regard. If you go into detail about what you want to look for, then it is not difficult that these uploads are "clever" by limiting what is described there. BUT, the content itself gives it away that the YouTubers uploading them are are not the true owners of the show, episode, parts of the movie and so forth. Like, what is the true percentage of all the YouTube content uploaded there that is truly original? I bet it is a very small percentage indeed.

That's true. I think it's completely ridiculous that you get all those restrictions, while others can upload whatever they like. And it's also very sad that some artists have such nitpicking lawyers. I mean, many of those Olympic ceremonies haven't even been distributed commercially -- if there wasn't YouTube, they would be pretty much forgotten, including the artists' performances. And that's truly a shame.

That's a damn shame...

What if Vangelis scored the Opening Ceremony in Athens, as we discussed here on these boards? Here's an idea coming from the man himself at a fan convention in London. He did it in one take! I don't know what network this was coming since the network logo was blacked out with the rings still in its place. There are close-up shots that we may have never saw on TV broadacasts.

New extract of the 1982 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony in Brisbane, Australia

Interesting, rav3n. Some 26 years later, it seems so tame and dull. I mean just those masses of people standing there and just flipping cards -- like a poor audition for a Socialist regime spectacle. But I believe that's the tape that got Ric Birch a job with LA-1984; and then launched his international career.

Boy, that Matilda is huge. Am surprised she didn't topple over with those winds.

All these daylight Ceremonies now look so amateurish and collegiate compared to the lavish, full-blown evening shows. That certainly didn't look like a $100/seat show to me.

Those clips are taken from the German network ZDF which broadcast the Athens 2004 opening ceremony live. I've recognised the captions for the different ceremonial segments by the font and that golden streak.

Rav3n, have you looked into the INSIGHT of all your video uploads in YouTube yet? I have and it is kind of disappointing. But, I am not surprised by the overall results so far. For example, when I looked at all my insight information about the Lillehammer 1994 ones, the majority of those that have seen it comes from the host nation in question. So, when we all are going to see what Beijing 2008 has to offer in less than 3 months from now, it would not be surprising if the majority of Chinese will want to see what was shown. That is, if the censors want them to see it.

Most of all about this post, since YouTube is based in America (California I believe), it is not surprising that I do have an all-out consistency of Americans wanting to watch my clips throughout my time there so far. On top of that, males in the middle-age group.

Hey everyone, I'm fairly new here and am an avid olympic fan. Do any of you know where I can find the closing NBCcreduts for both the Sydney 2000 & Athens 2004 games? Thanks!

Here we go. If my videos are gone because of a dare by "a copyright perfectionist", then I will not bother to post them up again.

where are they, Guard?

Where? In Australia. He is basically telling me that all the Olympic videos posted in YouTube are all copyright violations. So, he "tells" me this, "Why did you NOT put up the lyrics of the Australian national anthem?" Oh, by the way, he may be targeting all the other ones, too, like rav3n. Also, according to his YouTube page, he is 107 years old and it is not a typo.

What??? If I understand you correctly, he is a normal member (= not a representative of YouTube or a copyright law firm), has a personal agenda to "sue" copyright violations, but demands that you post the lyrics of the Australian national anthem for his peace of mind?

Come on, you can't take such people seriously. Why do you take all those attacks of such complete internet geeks and jerks personally? Those are pathetic wimps who don't have a life.

Did he write a video comment or did he contact you via PM? Because if I was in your place, I'd consider blocking the comment function completely so that you don't have the stress to handle all those comments coming in. And if you need additional information for your clip descriptions, you can as well ask us. And if he contacted you via PM: Isn't there a function to block users from contacting you again?

I know that, Olympian2004. I bet rav3n and others get a lot of such comments, too. Besides, it will be nuts for this guy to do it anyway. Like I said before, how much material in YouTube is truly original? Not much.

I understand Guardian and I wouldn't want you to get anymore flak from the masked copyright youtube fanboy. If you still have the videos with you, can you send them over to me directly? Thanks!

OMG i swear you guys, Youtube guys are getting WAY TOOO MUCH EMO with this copyright bullshit. Recently i got my Euro 2004 final match videos deleted :S . Of 2004!!! And i think they are going to delete another awesome episodes of the european football at Youtube. Dudes, if they keep acting like faggots i'm predicting that Youtube will not last 10 years.

I was going to publish videos of the upcoming Euro 2008 vids, but after this now screw it. And seriously, if they dare to delete my account AGAIN i will not lose my time again on uploading them, so i recommend you to enjoy (and download) them while you still can. This video online sharing thing is starting to suck since Google bought Youtube.

Well, it doesn't matter whether your EURO videos are four years old or even older. I think that FIFA and also UEFA are simply very strict about copyright. For example, if you watch archived newscasts dealing with World Cup, EURO or Bundesliga matches online here in Germany, the segments with official match footage are either cut out completely or superimposed with a picture "Due to legal reasons, we cannot show you the pictures". I believe that the IOC isn't as strict by far, since I've never heard that they forced YouTube to delete Olympic footage.

So it's not necessarily YouTube's problem, but rather a problem imposed on YouTube by the copyright holders. And let's face it: What we're doing on YouTube by uploading non-selfmade footage is actually illegal. That's why we have to expect that such videos can cause trouble.

Speaking of UEFA, I see on the Euro 2008 website that you can now purchase a plan that allows you to watch any match from the European Championships since 1992. If they are providing a subscription service than it stands to reason that they wouldn't want people to view it for free on Youtube.
