Jim856796
If Azerbaijan were to host an Olympic Games, they would be held in Baku. Baku is the capital of Azerbaijan with a population of 2 million. They have the Tofig Bakhramov Stadium. It has a capacity of 30000 seats, which is about 20-30,000 seats short for an Olympic Stadium. Either they do renovations to the Bakhramov Stadium or they would have ot build a new stadium. Some soccer venues throughout Azerbaijan would need renovation. Azerbaijan would have to build many new venues for a Summer Olympics, including a sports arena and a convention centre.
ghost1
The Azeris were also candidates for the EURO 2012, but didn't send a bid book, so were cut in an early stage But seriously - they have no chance of hosting 2016, Ok, they are a petrol-country, one of the fastets growing economies of the world, but only ten years till these OG - more realisticly 2020 if they keep this tempo of growth

Almaty - exactly - everyone though Almaty were outsiders but at the end they finished 4th and were shortlist-tauglich. And if you compare Kazachstan to Azerbaijan you will find many similarities. Kaz's GDP per capita is 8 200 USD (2005, Factbook) with a growth rate of 9,2%, Azer's is 4 800 USD, but growths with 26,4% per year - highest number in the world. So don't underestimate Azerbaijan - if not for 2016, for 2020 they will have good chances
baron-pierreIV
Yeah, but what sporting excellence does Azerbajian have at this point? Like Dubai, just because they have the petrol dollars and the facilities doesn't mean much if you DON'T have a VERY STRONG sporting tradition -- even more so in the summer vs. the Winter. Baku is a terribly polluted city. It would be like having the winter Olympics in Prudhoe Bay or Stavanger -- with a background of all those oil rigs and derricks. PLUS, what hotels does Azerbajian have? THe IOC would require at least 80,000 hotel rooms in Baku alone!

I'm just considering Azerbaijan as a future potential, not for 2016, because it was compared to Kanya that won't host Olympics even in 30 years, Azerbaijan however is another story
