Any suggestions for the route of the Torch relay?

i think we already have a discussed this some where else on the forum?

I would say the torch and logo will be announced next year some time!

i would be interested in knowing if anyone on the Gamesbids forums has any information about employment on staff with the Olympic Torch Relay. Any info about BOCOG or torch relay sponsor info would be greatly appreciated. I have attended 8 Games and worked at 2 .

OK, to repeat myself. I believe an earlier draft of the Beijing Torch relay had it touching the expatriate Chinese communities in possibly the ex-Olympic host cities + significant ones like San Francisco's (which could be a potential host). I believe an earlier theme, which could still be, was tracing the CHinese Diaspora, and beckoning them home, even for a visit.

Employment? I think it would only touch maybe 4 cities in the US - LA, SF, Atlanta and NYC. So, I don't think they would be hiring any staff members for a very short run in the US.

If it is as Baron has described the logical cities would be

Athens

Istanbul

Rome

Berlin

Paris

Madrid or Barcelona

London

Toronto

Vancouver

Los Angelos

San Francisco

New York City

Sydney

and then fellow Asian cities like

Ho Chi Minh City

Bangkok

Delhi

Mumbai

Islamabad

Seoul

I would say Tokyo would that would cause an upraising

and than all the major cities in China, I would assume it would entire in Hong Kong

If I'm right, the Torch design Contest had already ended. How much time they usually take to choose the final design of the torch.

Good to see that Beijing repeats the steps of Athens (although is a little repetitive). Maybe this torch world relay thing will become a new tradition for the future olympics.

basically, the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Well, except I don't think Japan would really be included -- you know they like to keep Japanese and CHinese ethnicities separate (the Japanese more than the Chinese);

And in Indonesia, the Chinese are a sort of persecuted minority -- not only for their ethnicity but because most of the Indonesian Chinese ALSO do not happen to be muslim. So maybe those 2 areas might be skipped over.

Manila, too, has a significant # of a Chinese minority, who are fairly well integrated into the Filipino way of life -- and have kept ties with mainland China or Hong Kong or Taiwan.

But with the turmoil in the Middle east, etc., this may be a very truncated Torch Relay.

I was an usher at the LA Coliseum for LA84

I was the logistics warehouse supervisor for 4 months at Utah Olympic Park during SLC2002

I was chosen to be a torch bearer for Atlanta Paralympics (but couldn't run) and was also a choir member for Paralympic Opening Ceremony

Hello fellow Bay Arean,

I'm not looking to work just the US portion. I want to see everything.

Beijing will be my 9th Games. Also interested in Womens World Cup 2007. I have worked 2 of those so far and I recommend that event highly to all Gamesbidders.

How about a Bay Area Gamesbidders get together in SF. We could travel around SF and photograph all the possible sites for the other GBers to enjoy

I herd that they are goin to try to go through most of the ancent civilizations of the world, such as Rome, Greece, India, and the Middle East, thou the Middle East is still up for debate. The torch, relay route, and logo will most likely be unvailed etween Febraury and July or next year. I predict that the torch realy will begin in March 2008.

Does anyone know how I could be a torchbearer???? Unfortunately, I was too young when the torch came to Sydney in 2000 to run (you had to be over 12...shows my age!!!)...and I would love the chance to run. I got selected for Melbourne 2006 Queen's Baton Relay, but couldn't run on the day.

Well, I did put an idea here some time ago about using the "Silk Road" for the international part of the torch relay.

Well, here's some new news on the relay:

MONACO, Oct 17, 2006 (AFP) - The Olympic flame could pass by Mt Everest, the world's highest mountain, en route to Beijing, organisers of the 2008 Summer Games announced on Tuesday.

``We're planning to take the Olympic flame to Mount Everest, it's a project we're studying,'' spokesman Yang Binyuan said here.

The move could be seen as a highly contentious one given that most of the Himalayan mountain range lies within Tibet, a region ruled by China since it sent in the military to ``liberate'' the Himalayan region in 1950.

Mt Everest, standing 8,848 metres (29,028 feet) high, lies on Nepal's border with Tibet, which international rights groups accuse the Chinese of ruling through repression and military intimidation.

Yang confirmed that construction of the 37 sporting infrastructures, including 31 in Beijing, being built for the Games would be finished by the end of 2007.

Once the sites are finished, the organisers plan to host around 40 test events, including the Paralympic Games.

Two have already taken place at the Beijing softball centre and sailing in Qingdao.

AFP

Not that it adds anything we didn't know. The Everest plan has long been known _ if anything, this latest statement, that they're "studying it", is less firm than previous announcements.

According to the BBC today, the Everest idea is most likely going to happen. The article has stated that there will be a test this year whether it is feasible to do so.

Yeah, I saw a report on this as well. I just wonder how feasible it is going to be. I mean, climbing Everest is still a dangerous feat at the best of times _ the mountain still claims lives every year _ but trying to organise a torch relay around it and stick to a schedule that would be hostage to the vagaries of mountain and weather conditions would have to be a nightmare. Nice idea, and very ambitious of the Chinese, but I just wonder if it's going to be beyond even the resources and expertise that the Chinese could throw at it.

Anyone knows when will the torch design be revealed? Any guess on how will it look like? I am not really familiar with Chinese crafts and stuff, but probably one guess I would take is it will be based on bamboo cos lotsa Chinese musical instruments are made of bamboo. And bamboo is quite a representation of Chinese culture I believe.
