Bear Posted March 5 Report Posted March 5 Welcome to the Milano Cortina 2026™ encore! Produced by Filmmaster, the Opening Ceremony is entitled Life in Motion, and it will serve as "a tribute to life as change and transformation, inspired by the language of art and its unique ability to interpret the ever-changing contemporary reality." Among the publicly named stars of the show, the ceremony will feature participation from the general public. I hope you all remembered to submit a video clip of you singing Volare! The Opening Ceremony is set for 20:00 local time, March 6, and will take place at the Verona Olympic™ Arena. You can watch the trailer for the ceremony here. 1 Quote
StefanMUC Posted March 5 Report Posted March 5 Germany will join the OC boycott, and rightly so. That farce by the IPC should not deserve any attention. A pity for the athletes and the performers, but this shameless rehabilitation of Russia is truly sickening. Quote

What I find really tricky in this case is that the IPC, as an organisation, is a "victim" of its own constitution. In a way, the IPC is much more democratic than the IOC in the sense that the decision to lift the ban on Russia and Belarus was not made by its President or its Governing Board but by the entire membership (i.e. all of the 185 NPCs, the 18 international federations governing para sports, 5 regional federations, 3 international organisationals of sports for disabled): they voted (91-77) not to partially suspend NPC Russia back in September, showing a real division. Sadly, I think it is a reflection of the division between the so-called North and South... 1 Quote

If half of the NPC stayed away, it would set a signal. 1 Quote
Ikarus360 Posted March 5 Report Posted March 5 I'll watch the Opening, but still its a shame its gonna be mostly tarnished because of this whole drama. Quote

I am afraid that the decision of Team Germany and other teams to stay out of the opening ceremony will be empty symbolism in the end - especially because the organizers have planned for an opening ceremony without athletes anyway, due to the large distances between Verona and the actual Paralympic clusters. So these Paralympics, sadly, start with a big shadow hanging over them. I will watch the opening ceremony anyway, but I would be lying if I said that I am looking forward to it, especially not to the flags of Belarus and Russia re-appearing. Quote
rio2016man Posted March 6 Report Posted March 6 The volunteers carrying the flags will walk extra slow to make it seem longer Quote
JMarkSnow2012 Posted March 6 Report Posted March 6 It's on commercial Channel 4 in the UK; currently on a long ad-break, which may be a good sign Quote
JMarkSnow2012 Posted March 6 Report Posted March 6 Aaaaand- UK Channel 4 straight in with the politics Quote
Ikarus360 Posted March 6 Report Posted March 6 Already images of the flagbearers outside the Verona Arena Quote
Ikarus360 Posted March 6 Report Posted March 6 Wait, no intro sequence. Also Mattarella shouldn't have shown up considering this. I know Meloni is secretly happy. Quote
yoshi Posted March 6 Report Posted March 6 "igniting the enthusiasm of the athletes". Those that are there, not the ones who are where the sport is happening Quote
JMarkSnow2012 Posted March 6 Report Posted March 6 Bit of a "Bird Gehrl" moment there. RIP David Toole Quote
yoshi Posted March 6 Report Posted March 6 "The idea here is" is already becoming annoying. We know you're reading the media guide, we're fine with it! 1 Quote

Olympian2004 Posted March 6 Report Posted March 6 Slow and reflective indeed, but beautiful - including the arrangement for the national anthem. 1 Quote
yoshi Posted March 6 Report Posted March 6 That's not a moment of protest, it's because someone inexplicably decided to put the ceremony hundreds of miles from the sport Quote
yoshi Posted March 6 Report Posted March 6 (edited) Alert: the mascots are competing for Andorra Actually for everyone. They'll be knackered by the end. Edited March 6 by yoshi 1 Quote
