Back when officially at least Olympics were bid for, rather than bought...   20 years ago today since London beat hot favourites Paris and a strong bid from Madrid - plus New York and Moscow.

Games wise worked out for London and Paris in the end.

And in the end, it turned out to be one of the best decision* in the history of the Olympic Games: London was able to deliver excellent Olympics in 2012 (I honestly don't think Paris could have done as well in 2012), and Paris had 12 more years to deliver excellent Olympics as well (and I'm convinced we would never have had the audacity and creativity we had last year if it had been organized in 2012).

*(I hesitated to say "the last good decision in the history of the IOC," but on paper, the double allocation of Paris and LA for 24-28 was also supposed to be a good thing, in my opinion. But with Trump...)
