sebastien1214 Posted February 24, 2025 Report Posted February 24, 2025 I'm quickly opening this new thread, because it will become the OCOG's number one issue for the year 2025: fixing the map of the Olympic sites. Starting with a potential solution for 3x3 hockey, in Chamonix: https://www.laradioplus.com/news/locales/121025/jo-2030-un-complexe-sportif-d-ici-a-2029-a-chamonix It should be noted that the project in question had been launched before the idea of a bid for the 2030 Olympics. So strictly speaking, it does not really fit into the framework of "new sites" for the Olympics. It is a project estimated at 58 million euros which notably provides for a 2,500-seat ice rink: a capacity that seems to me to be quite suitable for 3x3 hockey if we rely on the example of 3x3 basketball. Cyriln Posted February 24, 2025 Report Posted February 24, 2025 Here is the venues map that was included in the press release for the OCOG creation. Note that the opening ceremony is located in Chamonix, Grenoble and Albertville. Medals plazas are in Albertville, Annecy and Nice. Quote

I don't think it's still relevant: Wauquiez had launched this kind of idea about a year ago to have an opening ceremony that would involve these three cities, but it was just an idea in the air and since then it's mainly been about Lyon. In my opinion, OCOG 2030 has taken this up on the map because "we have to put the point somewhere", but it will certainly change. Quote

And surely everything due to be held there could be in Lyon or Grenoble. 2) I'm kinda fascinated by that one venue that's randomly over there halfway to the Atlantic. What is it, what's it hosting? More to the point, why? 3) I hadn't even thought of Chamonix for the opening ceremony. That must be the best place, to bring the Winter Olympics home? Edited February 24, 2025 by yoshi Quote

And if anything, until the intra-regional politics are solved, the location for an Opening Ceremony's probably still up in the air. (But now that LA28 has already started its Ceremonial efforts rolling, that would put an impetus on FA'30 to get their act together. And Sebastien, it's not about the comfort of the IOC members, the presidents of the federations, the guest heads of state, their security details, the CEOs of the main sponsors, hundreds of accredited press -- that should irk you, it's your (as the COJO) responsibility to provide the hospitality AND THE SECURITY (which includes unnecessarily moving them around for NO sane reason than -- oh, it's the regions fighting for control of the event -- that you place the OC setting in a sensible location in relation to where the Villages and large accommodations are, where the core of the volunteers, the workers, accommodations for thousands of visitors, etc., are based, and therefore, can render their support for the success of the event. Having hosted 3 other WOGs, those regional pooh-bahs should know all of that by now. Edited February 25, 2025 by baron-pierreIV Quote
sebastien1214 Posted February 26, 2025 Author Report Posted February 26, 2025 @StefanMUC About the Fort des Têtes (Briançon) which should be transformed into an Olympic village. The mayor of the city gave an interview, this passage seems interesting to me: "it will be a "public-private" operation in which there will be rehabilitation work, but also revenues in return since, in the same way as for the Olympic village in Paris, we will sell housing behind [...] As for the figures, we know roughly that we have 120 million euros of work to do and we know, since we have carried out all the programming studies, that we will have between 90 and 100 million euros of revenues from housing sales. The delta will be the cost of the Olympic village because it goes without saying that we cannot ask people who are going to buy housing to pay the cost of transforming the Olympic village themselves. This cost is public and it will be financed both by the Games budget but also by the rent that the Organizing Committee will finance to occupy the Olympic village. It is exactly the same format that was that of Paris 2024." https://www.lefigaro.fr/sports/jeux-olympiques/desenclavement-modernisation-heritage-pour-le-maire-de-briancon-les-jo-2030-constituent-une-formidable-chance-a-saisir-20250226 1 Quote
DamC Posted February 27, 2025 Report Posted February 27, 2025 If the opening ceremony actually ends up at Groupama Stadium, it'll be funny to see Lyon being under the spotlights of the whole world for the first night of the games despite the city not having anything to do with organizing of the games Quote

neige Posted February 27, 2025 Report Posted February 27, 2025 I suddenly think of another hypothesis... There is the desire to celebrate the 3 previous French editions of the winter games. Would they have in mind to make 3 groups in Chamonix, Grenoble, Albertville? Quote

Cyriln Posted March 7, 2025 Report Posted March 7, 2025 Edgar Grospiron started his tour of the potential venues. He's not touring alone, Michel Barnier is always with him. Today, they were at Val d'Isère, which will certainly be the main issue in the selection of venues. It was also the occasion for the reunion of Barnier and Jean-Claude Killy, the two co-presidents of Albertville 1992. https://www.lequipe.fr/Tous-sports/Actualites/Edgar-grospiron-avec-le-duo-barnier-killy-a-val-d-isere-pour-la-tournee-des-sites-des-jeux-alpes-2030/1545055 The objective is to present the venues map on Olympic Day, June 23 (which might be a busy day, with the comeback of Paris 2024 cauldron). In the article, there is also a group picture in front of the mountains. Note who has the central position: the regional president, not the OCOG president. If some people still didn't know who will really lead the Games... Quote
Cyriln Posted July 4, 2025 Report Posted July 4, 2025 A first version of the venues map (only Olympic venues, without villages) may be revealed on 24 July, for the first anniversary of the bid's election. Val d'Isère might be back as one of the two sites for alpine skiing with Courchevel, meaning that Méribel might be out. Méribel could still be a venue for Paralympics but may withdrew if it doesn't host Olympics too. In case of withdrawing, Tignes (co-host of 1992 Winter Paralympics) could host para alpine skiing. Heerenveen (Netherlands) seems to be the main option to host speed skating. Lyon will not host hockey. https://www.lequipe.fr/Tous-sports/Article/Jo-2030-un-flou-a-dissiper-pour-edgard-grospiron-et-ses-troupes/1574150 https://www.lequipe.fr/Tous-sports/Actualites/Meribel-ne-veut-pas-disparaitre-de-la-carte-des-alpes-2030/1574855 1 Quote
sebastien1214 Posted July 12, 2025 Author Report Posted July 12, 2025 The construction bidding (I guess that's the best possible translation?) for the construction of the Olympic Village in Nice was launched last Monday, and companies interested in building this Olympic Village have until September 5 to submit their applications. https://www.marches-publics.info/Annonces/MPI-pub-20251881280.htm As a reminder, this village will be built right next to the Allianz Riviera and the future Nice ice rink, in place of the old parking lots used by the Ikea which is located right next of the stadium (quite ironic when you know that Stockholm was interested in organizing these Olympic Games) The 38-page PDF document is interesting, as it gives initial indications of what we can expect from this future Olympic Village. Moreover, as I imagine all future construction biddings to come, it imposes a two-phase project (an "Olympic" phase and a "legacy" phase for after the Games). A study had previously been entrusted to SETEC, which had already worked on the Paris 2024 Olympic Village (https://www.setec.fr/blog/projets/village-des-athletes/). Concretely, SETEC's role here was to conduct a study to see what could be done for the Olympic Village, provide broad guidelines on the architectural directions to be taken, etc., in order to contribute to developing the specifications for this construction bidding. If we return to the construction bidding, companies are asked for the "Olympic" phase to deliver the village to the OCOG by September 30, 2029 at the latest. The Olympic Village is planned to have a capacity of 1,500 beds, with a "Village Plaza" that would serve as the main center of the village with shops, activities, a press area, etc. There will also be a 500-seat Olympic restaurant, a multi-faith prayer room (just 100m², don't mess around, we're in France), a clinic, etc. For the legacy phase, the Olympic Village will be transformed into a residential area in the traditional manner. On the part of the site that will be converted into housing (around two-thirds of the total area), at least one-third of the apartments will have to be social housing, with a student residence planned (exactly the same principle as for the Paris 2024 Olympic Village, in fact). Otherwise, regarding the timeline, the selected company will be announced in the second quarter of 2026, and construction is scheduled to begin in April 2027. 2 Quote

Bear Posted August 5, 2025 Report Posted August 5, 2025 Do any of the French users here know if this is true? Apparently Torino has been chosen to host the speed skating events: https://www.regione.piemonte.it/web/pinforma/notizie/olimpiadi-invernali-2030-torino-gare-pattinaggio-velocita# (Website is in Italian, English translation below) Quote The speed skating competitions of the 2030 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, assigned by the IOC to the French Alps, will be held in the Oval of Turin. On Thursday, July 25, the president of the Piedmont Region Alberto Cirio stressed that "after many months of work, which we carried out in silence and with pragmatism, we are proud to have achieved this important result. Once again this is the result of teamwork, Region and Municipality together, to grow Piedmont and Turin and make them increasingly capitals of sport and major events. It confirms a fact that we have always supported, namely that Turin and Piedmont have all the credentials to host major international competitions. We supported it when we applied to host the Bob competitions for the 2026 Olympics in Milan and Cortina and we continued to believe in it by running for France 2030". This result was also the subject of a press conference that President Cirio and Mayor Stefano Lo Russo held on July 27 at the City Hall in Turin. Quote

This is an article from July 2024; and the latest news is that the choice has still not been made. On July 28, the president of the AURA region essentially said that he had a preference for Turin rather than the Netherlands, but that the OCOG had not yet made its choice. (We will probably know in September-October) That said, I find it funny that an Italian regional president is uncorking the champagne a little too quickly. They clearly haven't learned the lessons of the UEFA Euro 2000 final. 1 Quote

One of Porte de Versailles Exhibition Halls might be big enough but the Games period clashes with the Argriculture Fair, which would be very challenging to move either in time or space. 3 - I am not sure whether Lyon really wants to host something... Milano started building its temporary speed skating venue months ago, meaning that you will need to rent space for about 6 months (including building and dismantling periods) which would come with a high price tag. Why would you then build a temporary venue, with no obvious potential venue in the Games footprint, when you can use an existing one, in a place that is crazy about Speed Skating and in a venue hosting world cup events ? The OCOG, together with IOC and ISU, has done the math... The newly formed Coordination Commission for French Alps 2030 is meeting in 2 days time with the Organising Committee for the first time 1-3 December 2025. The issue of the location of the speed skating venue will no doubt be high on the agenda. To refresh, this is the current statement on the IOC’s website today. That overseas venue is Turin’s Oval Lingotto, venue for the 2006 Olympic Winter Games. “Speed skating will likely be held in an existing venue overseas, to avoid building a new venue that does not have a solid legacy case” Olympics.com 1 Quote
