baron-pierreIV Posted January 9 Report Posted January 9 Once the embers settle and the fires are under control. do you think-- more than even before -- LA28 and the IOC should show some positive signs of caring for their once and future host community specially in light of staging sort-of-profitable sports extravaganzas? And if so, what? Of course, this is purely for discussions sake -- but you never know if anyone from the IOC, LA28 could pick up a point or two. I think LA28 and the IOC should start donating some cash and resources to first-aid efforts espcially in the neighborhoods if badly affected, that will be hosting some of their 2027 test and 2028 real events. Sydney had a similar situation with big bushfires around our metropolitan area in our summer of 1993-94 - just after we’d been elected 2000 host. The IOC did in that case very soon after a significant donation to relief efforts. I believe they did similar after the big fires in Greece that swept over Olympia. Quote

While Olympia nearly got burned down to a cinder, on the actual site itself, other than the 2 museums and gift store, all the stone buildings would just have been charred. I think the Village was spared. (The IOA Academy on the next hill was somehow also spared the fire.) I visited Olympia the following summer and it didn't seem worse for the wear. I'm thinking, if the IOC and the Olympic movement will forever be embedded in Los Angelenos' hearts and minds -- how about spearheading a re-planting program of fire retardant trees and (I think it's) deciduous vegetation to re-populate the fauna in the neighborhoods around the Sepulveda Basin, Westwood, Inglewood, Carson City. That's a start. (And of course, put in the appropriate plaques.) Quote

They’ll almost certainly make some appropriate gesture again in this case. It’s probably also going to be incorporated in the games’ “story”. Maybe even in the opening. “Rebuilding” or “Rising from the Ashes” or along those lines. 1 Quote
baron-pierreIV Posted January 10 Author Report Posted January 10 /\/\ I know it's not their task to solve the world's or LA's problems. But hopefully, it will be more than just words. I want to see some concrete action. I hope none of the current staffers suffered much. All those corporate suites at SoFi, Intuit, Crypto, the Coliseum could house a few hundred folks!! 1 Quote
Michelle Posted January 10 Report Posted January 10 Sadly there will be no positive press. And there shouldn’t be. Gavin Newsom is sinking fast, that clip of him that went viral earlier today will see his political career come to a sad and sorry end. Chatting casually with a member of the public who has just lost everything, without even the notion to offer her a hug or an embrace of support - just to stand in his freshly pressed shirt and aviators … suggesting he was on a call with the president. Lies! The people of California are starting to wake up - the one party state of California has failed its residents. Woke ideology has crippled their ability to govern their city when it needs critical care - the democrats are truly on notice! I won’t even start on the LA Mayor - inept and ineffective is actually me being kind to suggest she is both of those! Sadly, the IOC has once again, bestowed their trust in the wrong people - like they did with Rio. This could be the most costly disaster to befall the United States , which will ultimately hit the residents of Los Angeles in their pockets. Thousands of its citizens will have lost everything - and when the city does try to move on and forward a plan to get the Olympic roadshow started, good luck with garnering the citizens support! Why not use their dynamic "A" logo variants to feature more prominently on the T-shirts? Or let you pick your "A"?? And bizarre -- why ONLY in BLACK? Are they already in mourning?? $35 + shipping is kinda high (for me). Edited January 11 by baron-pierreIV 1 Quote

Bear Posted January 12 Report Posted January 12 Statement from Thomas Bach: Quote "We are in full solidarity with the citizens of Los Angeles and full of admiration for the tireless work of the firefighters and the security forces. Currently the full focus must be on the fight against the fires and the protection of the people and property. We have also learned that a great Olympian, Gary Hall Jr., has lost his medals in the fire. The IOC will provide him with replicas." Quote

baron-pierreIV Posted January 26 Author Report Posted January 26 (edited) OK, given a few days' perspective, I think the best LA28 (and the IOC) can do is to get the whole community and region and bring in all the naysayers is maybe for LA28 and Allianz to step into the breach where State Farm and Farmers' Insurance companies have denied compensation for homes that were burned. They are the ones hurting the most. If LA28, United26, the USOPC can set aside say, even 55% of the surplus that will be expected from the Games, that will go a long way in soothing the pain and impropriety of staging "fun" things like sports while vast parts of the hosting region are still hurting from the devastation. Going by the $223 million surplus from 1984 (which is still helping to fund sports programs in LA today) and some $60 million from World Cup 1994 (which was not shared with the LA region), if LA28 and the USOPC, when all the books of 2028 will have been closed, can set aside, say anything over $50 million from the 28 Games' profit and help the ones who lost the most from the fires -- that will go a long way in helping LA28 stage 'appropriate" Games. LA28, the IOC, Allianz can co-opt a fund with the State of California, to aid those most hurt not only by these fires but by major earthquakes in the region in the future. The USOPC can, of course, still raise funds that would have gone to them via other means, on their own. For its winter components, there will be Salt Lake 2034 to look forward to and fill those coffers. Edited January 26 by baron-pierreIV Quote
Bear Posted January 28 Report Posted January 28 The Governor announced a new initiative to aid in the recovery and rebuilding process, named LA Rises. Quote With plans to raise additional funds through private donations, LA Rises will provide major resources aimed at helping Los Angeles communities most affected by these catastrophic fires recover and rebuild. LA Rises will marshal the full resources of the private sector, augmenting and amplifying local and state resources, to rebuild Altadena, Pasadena, the Pacific Palisades, and all impacted communities. As part of the unified effort, city and county leaders are crafting recovery plans for their communities. The state is mobilizing its resources and scale, coordinating with the federal government, and removing red tape. LA Rises will galvanize the private sector to unlock additional capital and find new and innovative tools to help communities build back faster and stronger. ... LA Rises will contribute through collaboration, access to capital and financial tools, leveraging innovation and private-sector investment to drive a faster recovery. It will support the broader recovery efforts by: Fundraising and expanding access to philanthropic and private capital Formulating financing strategies to close the gap between available resources and the cost to rebuild Collaborating with other philanthropic and community organizations to maximize the impact of ongoing rebuilding and recovery efforts Supporting unified communication efforts to arm Angelenos with up-to-date, factual information, timelines for rebuilding, and available resources Leading the initiative is Dodgers Chairman Mark Walter, business leader and basketball star Magic Johnson, and none other than LA28 chair Casey Wasserman. https://www.gov.ca.gov/2025/01/28/today-governor-newsom-magic-johnson-and-casey-wasserman-to-announce-details-of-la-rises-initiative/ https://www.gov.ca.gov/2025/01/28/la-rises/ Quote
