ICE has disappeared 48 residents of New Mexico, and no one has been able to hear from them.

Little is known about the 48 people who were arrested by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, advocates and attorneys say, including their names, where or why they are being held, the conditions they are in or if they are even still in the country.

Also unclear is whether those arrested were provided access to basic services, such as interpretation or legal aid.

“We don’t know what’s happened to these four dozen New Mexicans,” said ACLU attorney Becca Sheff at a news conference Monday morning. “They’ve effectively disappeared — our organizations haven’t heard from them or encountered them in the ICE detention facilities here in our state.”

...i should probably renew my passport.

Who’s tiptoeing? I thought it was pretty clear from Week 1.

I have the impression lots of people still live in denial and are still waiting for „checks and balances“ to kick in eventually.

Don't travel there..

yeah that's probably sensible.

i'd treat it like entering tajikistan for the foreseeable future, i.e. the remainder of our lifetimes or until the regime collapses on itself after one too many purges like it does in the epilogue of the handmaid's tale.

Well, on the bright side.. can't wait for Trump to take directives from an African woman who is the same age as his children come LA 2028.  I'm sure he won't look down on her that the IOC didn't elect another old white guy to run the show

Can we bet about that?

I'm about to renew mine . . .  other than it expiring in June.  But the Renewal fees are INCREDIBLE -- almost $185!!  Don't know yet how I can complain to the Dept of State!!!

Oops. got thru to State.  Apparently that website I first started out yesterday -- securefillings.com is a FAKE, PIRATE website.  No wonder they were charging all those extra fees!!  So, Bear, go to travel.state.gov for the US Dept of State LEGIT website when you're ready to renew!!

Apparently US tourism industry already changed its forecast from a few % rise to 5% decline in foreign tourism. This is certainly going to prove a wildly optimistic figure at the end of the year.

It's important to acknowledge that the debate around border control and the handling of irregular migration is complex and not unique to the US. While there's valid criticism of US policies and ICE practices, it's worth noting that several European countries are also considering or implementing similar strategies

Denmark, for instance, has explored and proposed plans to process asylum seekers in third countries, aiming to transfer the responsibility of handling asylum claims outside its borders. This is very similar to the complaints levied against the USA. Germany has also discussed similar concepts, and is working on deals with other countries to handle asylum processes.

Many European nations, like the U.S., engage in the return of individuals whose asylum claims are rejected or who are deemed to be residing irregularly. The EU border agency, Frontex, is involved in border management and returns, which can involve forceful measures.

Therefore, while criticizing U.S. policies, it's crucial to recognise that the challenges of managing migration and the strategies employed are often shared across continents. It is not accurate to say that only the USA engages in these practices. The debate should focus on the ethics and effectiveness of these policies in general, rather than singling out one nation. It is important to look at the issue from a global perspective.

This is not normal.  What's happening in the United States right now is not something where we can really say it's happening elsewhere in the world.  And this is just 2 months into Trump's presidency.  It's likely to get worst before it gets any better.. if it gets any better

European countries still operate mostly by rule of law (not always sadly, and a negative trend is clearly there, not the least thanks to the various means of influence coming from Trump‘s puppet master in the Kremlin), as opposed to the US where your fate is entirely in the hands of arbitrary border police that isn‘t even considering evidence anymore. A fascist regime only works when low ranking officials are willing to collaborate without batting an eye.

Mainly for having a Real Madrid tattoo.

You can‘t make this sh*tshow up. Any script writer would have been chased out of Hollywood by now.

Srly every day passes is becoming a dumpster fire.

Again, i'm still surprised how some Americans are still thinking this would be solved when: a. The damage is done and it will take a full generation; b. Hoping the corporatist loser of a flip flop campaign can do something when elected as governor of California next year or her main big donors members who show their bubble of idiocracy and inaction. But my pessimism over the US as a society since Reagan has gone to worse.
