Excellent @Bear.   Is that Brisbane 2032 update to occur at the IOC Executive Board Meeting on 17th March preceding the 144th IOC Session which starts on 20th (?)

Usually these Games updates occur at the EB Meetings.

The update is to the wider IOC Session on the 20th, though I imagine there will be some discussions at the ExBo meeting on the 17th, especially if there will be a change to the venue plan. Maybe we'll get something at the press conference for that day?

(psst, they updated the schedule: https://stillmed.olympics.com/media/Documents/News/2025/02/IOC-EB-and-144th-IOC-Session-Greece-schedule.pdf )

Yes because at Tokyo 2020, we kinda missed out on this “simulated meteor shower effect” that was being talked about in lead-up to that opening ceremony.  In the end not even the drones didn’t even make an appearance at the OC from memory:

Tim Arvier is a pretty good source on political news.

So, Victoria Park is most likely the preferred site by the Authority. Unfortunately, we have to wait another month to verify.

If correct that is two independent reports stating that VP is the best site,

Crisafulli would be crazy to ignore the advice like ex-Premier Miles did.

Not sure why, probably COVID lockdowns decimated preparations (?)

Worry of the day:

$2.5b for Brisbane Arena
redirected to a new Olympic Stadium at Vic. Park

 = Swimming/Water Polo moving to
a roofed Gold Coast Aquatic Centre
 ?

So, is there a real risk that this could happen.   That Brisbane’s 15,000 seat Arena does not proceed at all and the Australian Government’s $2.5b becomes a re-directed contribution to the cost of a new Olympic Stadium and Warm-up Track at Victoria Park.

Presumably Gold Coast City Council’s Mayor Tom Tate, champing at the bit to get swimming and more events, would pay for a roof over their Aquatic Centre.

In that scenario, Swimming and Water Polo Finals would  then be moved to Gold Coast Aquatic Cente, venue of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

No wonder Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, presumably acting on “inside knowledge”, is today howling from the roof tops today that Swimming should stay in Brisbane.

I for one will be happy if this happens but i don't see Brisbane Arena getting cancelled although i think it should.

Most likely it goes ahead somewhere. Depends on the validation report that has been nearly 12 months and still waiting.

I suggested to the Authority if it has to be built, move it to above Wooloongabba Station CCR site opposite The Gabba

Also suggested basketball be played over swimming as that is what it may be used for between concerts after the Olympics.

It would be a fair enough trade off, IMO, and in keeping with the original pitch of the games as a regional games, building on the legacy of the Commonwealth Games and not throwing money around like confetti. I don’t see why the Gold Coast shouldn’t take on some more prominence.

Just not sure how the Queensland Government is going to pay for a multi-billion dollar Olympic Stadium which leaks over the past few days looks to be set for Victoria Park.

Unless there’s a PPP we don’t know about, they’ll surely have to go cap in hand to the Australian Government and/or request that the $2.5b for Brisbane Arena is funelled toward the cost of the new Olympic Stadium.

But, as you said, maybe Brisbane Arena will go ahead anyway.

Agree to that it would be an ideal venue to host NBL (Brisbane Bullets) before and after the Games.

Schrinner’s Fight to Guarantee Brisbane Arena is Built

I think that Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has this week heard something in his LNP circles around this possible move of swimming to the Gold Coast that we here are not privy to yet (?).  That‘s possibly why in the last 48 hours he has launched a pre-emptive broadside on the notion of swimming possibly moving to the Gold Coast.

The Courier Mail is also reporting this morning (27 Feb) on Schrinner’s fight to retain both Brisbane Arena and swimming in Brisbane.  Where there’s smoke, there’s fire as the saying goes.

I suspect the new Queensland Government paused the Brisbane Arena Validation Report pending the outcome of the 100-Day Games Review.

Personally my preference is that Brisbane Arena is not lost and it survives as a new legacy swimming/multi-use/basketball/events venue in any inter-governmental funding re-negotiations.

However, if funding for Brisbane Arena is redirected elsewhere and it falls by the wayside, swimming at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, would need a roof on it being winter.

The Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games had some sort of roof shelter over it’s outside pool at Georgia Tech which was open on both sides and one end.   Funding for such a  roof on the Gold Coast would hopefully come from Gold Coast City Council.

With Equestrian a real chance now to move from central Brisbane to the existing facility on the Gold Coast due to a likely new Olympic Stadium at Victoria Park, I can understand Brisbane not wanting to lose the blue ribbon Olympic Swimming from central Brisbane also.

Gold Coast is not missing out in 2032 and has multiple events already with all three equestrian disciplines (showjumping, dressage and cross-country) looking increasingly likely an addition to this list:

  • Indoor Volleyball
  • Olympic Beach Volleyball
  • Olympic Football Preliminaries
  • Olympic Judo
  • Olympic / Paralympic Triathlon
  • Olympic Marathon Swimming
  • Olympic Volleyball Preliminaries
  • Olympic Weightlifting
  • Olympic Wrestling
  • Paralympic Boccia
  • Paralympic Football Five-a-Side
  • Paralympic Wheelchair Rugby

It never rains, it pours ….

27 February 2025
Boxing is on track to be back for Brisbane 2032 and LA 2028 with the IOC today granting provisional recognition to World Boxing as the official governing body for the sport.

The disgraced IBA, former boxing world governing body, is now firmly banished from the Olympics.

Here is the link to today’s IOC Executive Board announcement:

IOC grants provisional recognition to World Boxing.

Moreton Bay Sports Centre will be favourite to be reinstated as the 2032 boxing venue so assuming the 100-Day Games Review has anticipated this.

Breaking news update - 27 February:

Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King is being reported in today’s Courier Mail that she has:

  • “thrown her support behind the Lord Mayor’s fight to guarantee a new inner-city Brisbane Arena, labelling it an important legacy project for the city and the nation”
  • “her comments come amid concerns that plans to build the venue could be scrapped if swimming events at the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games were relocated to the Gold Coast.“
  • “Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner on Tuesday slammed Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate’s bid to poach swimming from Brisbane, vowing to fight “tooth and nail” to ensure the $2.5bn arena that would replace the Brisbane Entertainment Centre is built as a lasting legacy of hosting the Games”
  • “Infrastructure Minister Catherine King told The Courier-Mail the federal government remained committed to its $2.5bn investment in the arena, as significant progress was being made with work well under way on the joint business case”
  • “Projects like the Brisbane Arena prove to Queensland residents that the government is serious about ensuring the Games leave a lasting legacy, she said.”
  • “The arena will provide a much-needed indoor entertainment venue that will be enjoyed by the community well into the future.  This is an important project for Brisbane, and for Australia, and we’re looking forward to getting it done.”

it would extremely disappointing to see Brisbane Arena scrapped (if it happens). Boondall is old, miles out of the city and frankly a pain in the arse. I was there on the 15/2 for All Elite Wrestling and whilst i loved the wrestling coming from the western suburbs it was a long drive and due to a shutdown of the shorncliffe line i had no choice but to pay $18 for parking.

its an embrassment that Boondall is the entertainment centre when other cities like melbourne and sydney are alot closer to the city

I take it all this means that roofing Suncorp is out of the question - too expensive? Shame, will seem odd for the most swimming mad country on the planet to be returning to normal capacity after La Defence & SoFi. Would've been a legacy too in a famously wet city. From what I can tell it seems like Brisbane kinda needs a modern arena much like it needs a stadium, but does it necessarily need to host swimming? That said, it's probably fair that Gold Coast should get a marquee event, it's supposed to be a regional games & it's really Gold Coast that made this "bid" happen at all with 2018.

Roofing Suncorp Stadium is still a “faint possibility” if the 100-Day Games Review recommends it and the Governmrnt supports that.  I’m only guessing that this roofing Suncorp Stadium for swimming might have been one of the 5,000 submissions to the Review.  We can live in hope because a massive pulsating swimming venue in 2032 would be in line with Paris 2024 and LA 2028,  and great for our own very strong Australian swimming teams.

We’ll all soon know when the Government publicly announces very soon what it will support once it receives the Review Report.

I understand an interim Report has already gone to the Queensland Government.

Thanks for some of the article behind a paywall

Katherine King said all this months ago and shut the LNP down when they approached her to put all funding together and not separate it as in the agreement.

She said things like "it is too far advanced to cancel now". Strange seeing no validation report has been mentioned.

The Gold Coast Aquatic Centre will be hosting the Swimming World Championships in 2028.

Second only to the Olympics in regard to achievements for swimmers. The venue will be on the world stage.

The Gold Coast Council will be putting a fair amount of money into getting it ready. That's funding the State Government needs if it wants to save cost. A roof planned for the venue, but i can't find the proposed capacity.

Brisbane Arena is only around 15k capacity for swimming. The added construction costs to accommodate the 3 drop in pools and remove them would be considerable. Maybe that why it is estimated to cost so much.

The Gold Coast is building an Entertainment Centre for $480 million, way short of BAs $2,500 million.

I am not sure how to edit something in my post.

Tate mentioned "hosting the swimming World Championship in 2028."

But i believe he is just lobbying for the event. Also 2028 is the LA Olympics so it won't be that year.

Maybe its 2029?

You’re correct, the Worlds (long course) are held every 2 odd years so there are none in 2028,

Beijing is host of the 2029 World Aquatics Championships and Spain is hosting the 2031 edition.

So I think that Tate is gunning for maybe the 25m (short course) edition of the World Championships (?)

(… still looking into it ….)
