Westfale 32
In that case, pass. Did they bid for games? Yes, they did. Triffle is right. Düsseldorf is too close to Gelsenkirchen, Dortmund and Cologne.
dave199 57
Ehhhhh! Remains to be seen. For a country that hasn't really hosted these new, major hihg-tech tournaments, that remains to be seen. And people shouldn't be using SARS as an excuse. If they're really organized, then they should have had domestic contingency plans. OK, so what happens if SARS appears again in 2 years' time? Look how good their preparations for these games are coming along. All good signs normally leads to something good at the end of the road. If there is another major SARS breakout again in 2 years times, hmmm, maybe they'd be moved to a city that has most of the venues in place upgraded and would be really prepared to host the games on such short notice. Athens again? (Snooze!!) ...hhmmmmm, maybe Sydney?? or for the hell of it....ATLANTA!!!!! Anyways, I believe the Beijing games will be excellent.

Sydney didn't want it again. The US will be there again for 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014.

Mikel 0
Israeli AF command would be getting new coordinates of secret Hezbollah cells!! By the way Israel is considered European They are part of UEFA and Eurovision and they tried to join the EU in the past.
Faster 545
Mikel, Israel is an Asian country, its because that since about a 12 other Asian nations do not recognize Israel the choice was made for it to compete in European sport and to politically associate itself with Europe. Similar to Kazakhstan, its a fully Asian nation, but it chooses its political and sporting position to be in Europe.
dave199 57
Three successive Games in Europe? Baron would have a fit. Awww, poor baby!! Let's get the pacifier for him!! But it's true, if IOC needs a backup city for an Olympic games, we all know who they'll be calling first.
Faster 545
there are few cities that could act as backups within 1 year I would say no one within 2 years LA, Seoul, Sydney, Atlanta within 3 years Barcelona, Paris within 4 years just about any city over 4 million

I think Madrid will be able to be a back-up city in 3 years, too. They have 75% of the venues in place, because although Madrid wasn't chosen in Singapore, the venues construction continued. Kazazhstan staddles the Ural Mountains and is thus, like Russia, geographically in BOTH Europe and Asia. Azerbaijan and Georgia both straddle the Caucasus, and are also both in both continents. Armenia is geographically Asian, that is trus, but claims cultural links with Europe. Cyprus can be considered geographically Asian too, close to the coastlines of Syria, Lebanon and the Asian portion of Turkey, but is considered European because of cultural ties.
