It's good that you changed your mind. For me, Rio's ceremonies (especially the Olympic opening) were one of the best sets of ceremonies I have ever seen. The fact that they cost comparably little money makes it even better.

I feel the whole perception of Paralympic and disability has improved a lot more since London 2012, that we don't really need to rehash all these sob stories again. It should really be a more forward looking view of Paralympics rather than this dated propaganda that serves no one. I also have slight issue with the opening sketch where that disabled guy was in therapy, as if to portray if you are disabled you will be depressed.

Probably only in England, precisely because you hosted the Games that year. Here in France, 2012 didn't change anything at all, the Paras weren't even broadcast. And I imagine that in other countries around the world, the London Paras in 2012 had no impact.

I don't mind the messaging, the Paralympics will always have that political (not sure that's the right word but it's useful shorthand) angle - as they should. I guess you're right that the most effective way to convey them is in words from the people themselves. And I think @kevzz is right too, it is a competitive event, serious sport & that's how it's being presented now compared to even 2012, & that's as it should be :)

(And Channel 4 just got bored & randomly cut to a break)

In Germany, the London 2012 Paralympics seem to have changed perceptions indeed. Since then, there's a stronger perception of the Paralympic athletes' feats instead of their disabilities. And the Paralympics also get way more coverage on TV.

They did so much with a small budget. I guess I was just dissapointed because there was a promise of a bigger scale show which had to be toned down because of the economic crisis Brazil was going through (i recall Ric Birch abandoned the production in midway due to disagreements even). A combination of stuff and the fact i compared them to Rio and even Sochi's ceremonies which caused my initial reaction to be somewhat pessimistic.

However, rewatching it again makes me appreciate it so much now, how joyful and colorful it was. You can tell it was before things got more gloomy after the 2016 election and the Pandemic.

It's definitely a much better produced ceremony so far compared to OOC, with good camerawork and the usual production you expect for a big event like this. However I still find the overall mood of the ceremony a little off. Too sombre and overly one-note.

Yes, I find the music now particularly tiring and somber. Why does Jolly always get his pacing wrong? He needs to entertain people and not bore them - and that is surprising from a guy who says of himself that he gets bored easily.

Those green projections on the obelisque and the stage also remind me of Rio 2016... But that's about it, Rio's ceremonies exuded so much warmth and enthusiasm, while Paris' ceremonies come across so cold and aloof quite often.

I feel like if we had a properly celebratory Olympic closing ceremony we'd be more ready for this.

It is serious and monochromatic, but it's also much more cohesive than the Olympic opening, and I don't see anything wrong with a more serious tone for opening ceremonies anyway.

There is a real lack of wow moments so far though.

Well, it's something very French, so maybe not because it's dark (although... we like to make political shows and therefore necessarily dark), but in any case because we are used to producing very conceptual stuff in art, which takes the time to develop their thing. So yes, those who absolutely need to have three explosions per second, things coming out of the ground every minute, a rhythm as lively as a TikTok video or a Marvel movie will be disappointed... but that's not French style.

And what is it with the giant white flags? I noticed they also have smaller light grey flags that look almost white in the opening dance segments. Am I the only one thinking about disabled performers waving white flags is not a good look?
