Inspiration for LA28 "Look of the Games"

There was "festive federalism" in 1984.  Now, a little bird told me that LA28 might go for this look -- from World War I -- the Dazzle Camouflage Look for the Games in 4 years!  I LIKE IT!!

But how could that be?  🙄 The Summer medals follow a STRICT IOC tradition on the obverse.  And there is a little play allowed on the design of the reverse (i.e,  mainly the Games logo, the Olympic rings, the City and some space for medalist's name and event.  (Am not a fan of placing that info on the rim of the medals.  So many medals have been wasted when the engraving on the rim goes wrong.)  And they will be awarding some 4.000+ (including the Paras.  

I think he might have more give on the Paralympics' medals -- if the IPC will allow him.  But they tend to tow the IOC line.  

Let's see where this will go??

If LA28 organizers were smart they would go full LA/West Coast style.

It is distinctly unique to LA/California having influenced many other cultures around the world and it has left an indelible mark on U.S. history.

I'm talking murals, low riders, food trucks/tacos, skateboarding, surfing, roller skating through Venice Beach, house parties, pool parties. The city literally has an endless list of things to pull from. They just need to do a good job at capturing it on camera for the global TV audience.

Very nice look, should look good on the banners. Miss the Hollywood font though, although the mix of fonts does have a bit of a California feel. That said, I kinda hope they treat the Coliseum with a bit more... subtlety? The entire arched structure covered in bright orange like in the video could look quite OTT 

(Also have they settled on that curvy multicoloured A as the main official logo? Would make sense, its colours are like the look)

I have a confession - I didn't like the Hollywood font! I thought it was so heavy and blocky it became distracting and difficult to read. Like it seemed more like decorative Lego blocks than words so my eyes would gloss over it

Beautiful!! I LIKE IT!!  I had thought -- or in my deepest core, I had wanted something to do with flowers -- and by God, they did it!! 

A few thoughts: 

* Also, the Bird of Paradise bloom makes a comeback!  It was the Official Flower of LA 1984; now exploited even more.  (One of the nurseries--I think it was Armstrong Nurseries-- created an Olympia Rose in 1984, so that was the Official "Cultivated" Olympic Rose . . .  while the Bird of Paradise was the Official Natural Flower of '84! )  Or correction: it's always been the City of LA's Official Flower -- which LA 1984 honored and featured in the bouquets they gave to the medalists; but since LAOOC couldn't make any royalties over Bird of Paradise being named the Official Flower of the 1984 Games, they recognized the 1984 Olympia Rose as the Official ("Cultivated" Flower so they could make a few royalties on that designation -- which they couldn't from the natural and wild-growing Bird of Paradise.)

* So Atlanta 1996 had its "Quilt (City) of Leaves" green; and now LA28's "SuperBloom."  Nice transition and seemingly natural organic growth -- and the overlapping abstract graphics and motifs here make more sense and are more sophisticated than the common jumble and trite shapes that was Paris' look.  

* Now, I hope they pick a deep Aqua for the LA Memorial Track because that might be the coolest color when the sun is beating down on the stadium and would be least harmful to the runners' eyes and the TV cameras.  

But again, this is sooooo FAR in advance of 2028.  Will they use this Look and Color Palette for the Test Events, if any???

I really love it!!

When they first revealed the emblem and the website was updated with only black and neon green, I was really worried at how the branding would look like. It didn't really reflect LA or SoCal culture, and it kind of felt too edgy. Seeing now that they truly made an effort to incorporate the city's culture and heritage with the colors, graphics, and typefaces*, I'm very happy with what we have. Compared to the LA26 branding for FIFA, this one feels more authentic in my opinion.

*I'm not a huge fan of the typefaces, especially the fact that we now have five (four for the look + the original Hollywood one). I think they're doing too much with it, BUT I do recognize that they exist to represent LA street culture, so I can't be too upset about it. I'm sure they'll grow on me...

Yess, I think that would be fantastic. I think it would complement the Coliseum's red-colored seats, as having a standard red track would be Too Much Red in my opinion.

The building blocks are sure there and promising - attractive, vibrant and warm colour palette, simple but effective geometric patterns designed to work in 12 row grids - and they do seem to be designed with kinetic use in mind. Very promising indeed. Liking it a lot.

 

But we’ll have to see how they work once applied, though. I was similarly enthusiastic about Paris’, but in the end I thought they applied theirs too conservatively and too monotonely in the venues. They should have mixed up their colours more.

As for the typefaces, I was a bit dubious when the first mention of mixed typefaces came up. But, I’m already warming to it. A very distinctive way to put the brand across. Again, I’d like to see how that’s going to be applied in the venues, but a very bold and innovative choice with great potential.

 

In summary, Congrats LA, you’ve excelled at your individual elements. Now let’s see you stick the landing!

So the 3 bands above will dominate the bunting in the stadia and venues.  I especially like the 2nd one where there's almost a Native American motif on the right end of the band.  I wish there were more of those.  

When the cameras pan L - R or vice versa, I can see some movement in the bunting, but I hope it won't be too distracting with the athletic action.

Very nice all together though - interested to see what colour they make the athletics track now it's part of the look. I assume it can't be multi coloured so I guess the luminous orange?

(Should've added earlier that it's a good sign that they're aiming for this being emphatically LA/California's Olympics. Should give them some distance from the...other stuff)

It’s actually just the one continuous band, or loop rather, that repeats back on itself, as shown fully at the bottom of the colour palette pic:

In the video. It explains that the band contains about a dozen tributes, or inspirations within it. It moves pretty fast, so I can’t recollect them all, but it included things like: Desert Vegetation, the Flame, Hollywood ( @Olympics2028 will be relived to see that), Architecture, the Pacific, and First People. So there’s definitely a lot of references to unpick within there.

The video also shows a bit of footage where the designs are indeed animated. I’m really interested to see how far that is going to be applied - with more and more use of LED stadium hoardings, surely animated Looks at the Olympics will be the way of the future. I saw some limited animated use of the look in Paris, and was already surprised their wasn’t more.

I wouldn’t be too worried about it being distracting. We’re already seeing dynamic animated hoardings for advertising in other sports, including the World Cup. I’d consider animated McDonalds or Nike ads far more obtrusive than a bit of animated decorative patterns around the venues.

So where will "LA28" or "Lozangeles '28" show up on this "Superbloom" band?   Really VIBRANT colors & combinations!!

Really love it. The colors also remind me a lot of LA'84 own brand so I want to believe its a bit of a nod of sorts.

The geometrical partners also remind me heavily of Art Deco and indigenous people art (so in a way I'm also reminded of SLC 2002). Mixing different typefaces might be jarring for some but I think its innovative and can work well depending of how its applied.

Yep, good job, looks like some proper thought has gone into this. I'm happy the pinky/orangey aspect of the bid logo is back. The bid logo really nailed the colours and it looks like they've more or less replicated that (with the addition of a bit of green too).

Love the patterns and the motion, the multi-font idea is something I already like the look of too.

It'll all work fantastically digitally. I'm a little bit more wary about it being a bit much as a venue dressing, but hopefully they won't just plonk the patterns unaltered field-side - they should allude to them, or zoom in on them without having the full psychedelic effect everywhere, all the time.
