If it comes down to Germany v. Brazil, then it's the 2 largest countries (population-wise, outside of the US) that rise to the top.

Well, now that Oz is out (and it's not like Australia would have ever reached the final anyway outside fantasy land) I'm really, really hoping for a Germany-England final (and yes, I know the very thought would send shivers down the spines of most Germans and Brits, but for the rest of us, just think of the sheer occassion and history of it!).

Actually a lot of people here really want that as well - it's often known as "The Dream Final" - but most don't think it will happen - it'll probably be the two South American teams.

That said, you said Brits. I also know a Scottish guy at work who has supported Gemany all his life (he's not German, you can guess why). I sure he would look forward to such a final, so long as Germany were to win of course.

Santayana said: Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

Sad.

You know there can be some truth in that in the World Cup. Some people swar by it and have not been that wrong, well according to them... I've always been ruled by my heart and by my not so sensible head. Maybe I should listen, but to whom?

I don't really believe that England can reach the final - I think they are able to beat Portugal and reach the semi-finals, if they improve how they play as France did this evening - against stronger oppostion (that's not Sweden) England often do better for some reason.

I would love to see a Germany-Italy and England-France semi and than A Germany-France final, it would be perfect.

I also seeing the same thing happening. I believe Germany will only go so far though. I don't think they can beat the Italians. The last time the two squads met, I believe Italy won 4-1.

Brazil seems to be the overall favourites but I got a feeling that they won't reach the finals this year. I think France could be that team to upset the Brazilians. If France beats the Brazilians I see them going to the Finals. I think they'll be getting better as each game comes.

Therefore, my predictions are as follows:

Quarter-finals

Germany vs. Argentina

Italy vs. Ukraine

Brazil vs. France

England vs. Portugal

Semi-finals

Germany vs. Italy

England vs. France

Therefore, we have an Italy vs. France finals.

Anyways, thats just my opinion at this point in time. It may change.

COngratulations, England and Portugal. Good game.

As a non-soccer fan, I got choked up -- mainly by the civility and brotherhood displayed by both the winning & losing sides (altho I slightly favored Portugal). But the grace shown by the Brits, the exulted joy of the Ports (for the victory they worked for) -- Oy! If the real world were only like that.

That Ronaldo sure is pretty. And Ricardo - what a job he did!!

Wow! Won't it be something if Portugal faces Brazil in the semis? Has that ever happened before -- a colonial master facing its biggest colony -- almost like the parent fighting its oldest, favorite child? That will be something. And Scolari coached Brazil before? Heavens!

Well, that is, if France (my choice) doesn't beat Brazil!! (Remember, not only 1998, but the finals of the Olympics in Pasadena in 1984 - les blues gave it to the Cariocas!!

That 4-1 win means nothing, it happened it March at the end of the season without the full squard and without the training camp. Both teams are different now and Germany has overcome the best team in the tournement to that point and has assumed the mental of finalist team in most observers minds. Italy has doing nothing to impress and the knock against Germany 4 years ago is true of Italy now, in fact even more so since Paraguay and the US at the time had somewhat respectable teams.
