That reminds me, someone was baffled at the OC why Michael Phelps was there. Well, he’s there commenting with Mike Tirico for all the swimming events.

And the crowds at basically all the venues are so crowded!! Even the basketball venue in Lille was a PACKED house!!!

I don't know much about swimming, I don't follow swimming, I can't even swim () but that is an unreal achievement. What an atmosphere too. Am I right in calculating that France are now top of the table?

Edit: yes you were... for all of about 4 minutes until China turned up.

Double edit: Waa I do not like the broadcast fading the crowd noise down during La Marseillaise  I stayed tuned in instead of checking out other sporting action because I wanted to hear the crowd.

LEON MARCHAND !!! The New Phelps.

A few more games and maybe. By Brisbane perhaps.

But certainly the top contender now for Star of the Paris games.

Magnifique, Roi Leon!

Star of the Paris Games? Did you see the scene at City Hall & elsewhere? France is going absolutely NUTS over Leon Marchand! Even Michael Phelps was going bonkers watching with Mike Tirico. lol

Teddy Riner. True french legend.

Indeed. He pulled a Cathy Freeman too, with that gold after lighting the calduron with Marie-JO. Thankfully, the judo final for the girls today ensured that my country didn't pulled something from Sydney as well, so we are both happy!

Riner in judo, the 4th medal for Marchand, and now the historic triple of men's BMX (first time that we have had an all-French podium at the Summer Games since... Paris 1924, in gymnastics)

Already a historic day for France.

You only wanted to come top 5 - at this rate top 1 might be in reach  The 1-2-3 was a special moment - I thought the crowd noise in London would be hard to top but wow.

Lol! I know Rob (that one ^) won't like this but even though I don't normally pay any attention to Olympic football, as an Arsenal fan I do hope France win the gold for Thierry :)

I didn't think we'd make it to the semi-finals to be honest. With all the refusals from the clubs, the final team selected is a bit like our U23 B team or even our C team. Now, opposite us, Egypt looks beatable, so I want to say that we're almost doomed to go to the final. But Spain or Morocco... it's more complicated.

Now, I wait without much hope for the results of our women's team today. In their tradition of disappointing us every time, I don't see them eliminating Brazil, but... you never know what happens.

If it is any consolation, we don't see us eliminating you either, given how we progressed so far. So, let's all hope for the best tomorrow for either side.

I think le basket is popular in France, and the best stars show up for the Olympics unlike in mens football, so Olympic basketball is a relatively big draw. And the French have some amazing players too (Victor Wembanyama!), albeit none of them guards.

How much do people in France care about the mens football tournament given that so few of the star players are competing?

i'm not cutting monaco any breaks either.

albert better teach those twins how to push a bobsled or something more useful than skimming off the top of their tax haven.

Well, the other next country over, Germany, is doing even worse, relatively speaking. They only have seven medals, thus far, with a population almost twice as big. Not good.
