Olympian2004
Just now, Michelle said: Germany and Italy will want to host asap, for these exact reasons. I find it bewildering how Germany doesn’t do better at the summer games. I should say, "Me too, me too", but it has been a steady downward trend for Germany since the Barcelona 1992 Games. Just like in terms of placing a successful bid for the Olympic Games, we haven't found the recipe yet to support our athletes better and make them more competitive on the international stage. Sir Rols
Guys, we may have won the Ashes this time, but I’m not here to rub it in - we’ve been in your position too many times lately. Just wondering how you all consider your results in Paris. Is it a comedown? Is it seen as an inevitable fading of the London glow (and you really rode that wave brilliantly)? Where did you think you were unlucky not to go further (I’m guessing perhaps cycling? Like you guys “stole” that from us after we’d been so strong it in for a long time). Again, not trying to be snarky. Your team results are still great and should be celebrated. I guess it’s just I’ve felt your standards have been set pretty high since London. krow
as china and the US escalate this cold war redux on the medal table, i imagine every country is going to have to work harder or accept the losses.

The slightly-less Cold war nation, Russia, took dozens of medals in previous Olympics, not a single one this time. The real threats to Team GB (ignoring the host nation's advantage) seem to be sporting near-peers like the Netherlands, Australia and South Korea. Apart from Andreeva/Shnaider in the tennis doubles, all other AIN medals came from Belarus athletes. Lukashenko will be happy. So that makes it even worse for the likes of GB (or even more so Germany) that they completely failed to fill the Russia gap.
yoshi
If Paris feels underwhelming (it shouldn't really) it'll be because we've been spoiled by London & the Games around it. Also maybe because some of the most hyped stars couldn't quite get to gold - it did sometimes feel like there was a BBC curse But come on, it's still 14 golds & a top 10 position, that's nothing to be sniffed at - anyone who does is like those annoying City fans who want Pep out because they won a game by less than 5 goals - plus although I don't really like the American system & won't use it to settle battles (congrats France) it does give a measure of near misses of gold, & there we're third . So a little more luck & it could look very different. Certainly not a "bad Olympics" though
Rob2012
There can't be many countries in history that got 65 medals and finished as low as 7th. It's an unusual one. Cycling, Archibald getting injured might be the biggest single factor in not finishing two or three places higher. Molly Caudery going for an unnecessarily high jump in the first round of the pole vault cost us one of of best gold chances in the athletics. Peaty got covid. I guess that's another one that could've been better. I don't know what Dujardin was predicted to do, but it's for the best she wasn't there rather than winning Gold then the video coming out. So I won't bemoan that one. Plenty of other near misses too. But lots of PBs that got silvers and bronzes, so maybe that was just our ceiling for the most part. Michelle
France and team GB had so many missed opportunities for Gold. Sometimes you get lucky, and sometimes you don’t. a good games for both European powerhouses though. Plus the Netherlands. Aus was probably lucky to get a few we did. But we were also unlucky we didn’t get a few more, so I guess it balances. 10 hours ago, Rob2012 said: There can't be many countries in history that got 65 medals and finished as low as 7th. yoshi
This deserves noting - it's raining gold! https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/disability-sport/live/c4gdvje37wyt (Not sure the top of the table makes great reading for the global Paralympic movement though. Top has 30 golds, second has 23, third has...8. Is that normal?)

yoshi
Well there's certainly not gonna be anyone feeling underwhelmed by the Paralympic performance - second place & 49 golds (I hope there's something still available now to get it to 50) I'd imagine the US will be coming for us on home soil though, so let's enjoy overall silver while we can

So congratulations for keeping your foot firmly "in the door" in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games! Besides France, Italy and the Netherlands, you guys are sure our big role model in terms of how to achieve athletic excellence!
