Olympian2004 Posted August 11 Report Posted August 11 Kristina Vogel, former German cyclist, hits the nail on the head while being the first person to comment in the post-ceremony broadcast of ZDF: "I would have expected more". You tell them, girl! This was a major letdown. Thomas Jolly could have sailed on that wave of emotions and exuberance that Paris and France displayed during the past two weeks - instead he staged an even more disjointed and ill-paced mess than the opening ceremony. The opening had at least Céline Dion as the highlight at the end. But this ceremony ends with "My Way" and 20-second fireworks. What the... Quote
baron-pierreIV Posted August 11 Author Report Posted August 11 What a disappointing and DISMAL ending for what looked like glorious Games! I guess you can't win them all. Quote

The song was good, that singer is incredible, but not the best choice of song. Quote

AmaniS Posted August 11 Report Posted August 11 LA28 started good, but ending wit 3 musical performance? That's all LA has. Mountains. Stadium. Beach. Could have used it more as a travel commercial. Show a church or monastery. Restaurants. Had a few different people taking to different places. Quote
mr.bernham Posted August 11 Report Posted August 11 I honestly missed the Seine. I gotta say, Paris’ organizers were right. The city itself is a much better backdrop than the stadium. 2 Quote

LatinXTC Posted August 11 Report Posted August 11 Omg this was soooo boring! Almost fell asleep during the long-winded unveiling of the rings, which is supposed to be part of the opening ceremony maybe someone should have told Paris that. And as soon as I saw that scientologist dork for the handover ceremony, i was disgusted. And that wasn't even a proper handover ceremony! They should have taken notes from Tokyo! You could see lots of empty seats in the stadium, people were right to stay away. In spite of my initial response to the OC it grew on me so it's really disappointing that they didn't do something as innovative. Quote
baron-pierreIV Posted August 11 Author Report Posted August 11 If I were there in person, I would ask for a refund of my admission! I certainly would've felt RIPPED OFF!! 1 Quote

Unfortunately I think it was all planned before the amazing atmosphere and games time of the last 2 weeks. DAVID ATKINS WE NEED YOU!!!! LA28 will just be one big concert mainly RAP and American trash. Brisbane 32, will Atkins still be alive - god i hope he gets the nod Quote
olimpicgamer Posted August 11 Report Posted August 11 There weren't many athletes left by the end of the ceremony. The excitement was gone. It felt like leftovers nobosy wanted. Quote
Ikarus360 Posted August 11 Report Posted August 11 Even the performers were giving absolute zero fucks and just doing their daily routine during this ceremony Quote
FYI Posted August 11 Report Posted August 11 Quote including that uninspired, cheap MTV LA handover. Couldn't agree more. Quote

Olympian2004 Posted August 11 Report Posted August 11 And the moderator just closed the ZDF broadcast with the immortal words "Bonne nuiiiii". Has that guy really spent more than two weeks in France? Oh well... It only adds the cherry on top of this messy evening. Quote
sebastien1214 Posted August 11 Report Posted August 11 It wasn't a good ceremony. But even the LA handover didn't give me a good feeling. It's exactly what I was afraid of: a Superbowl concert. However, I wish LA every success and I'm sure they'll do great ceremonies (let them keep their idea for the opening, I like it a lot). It's not a ceremony that will be remembered. And I don't want us to organize ceremonies in stadiums anymore. Despite its imperfections, the Seine was so much better. Quote

There are far too many Olympic hosts that did a much better job in a stadium. 3 Quote

Juso Posted August 11 Report Posted August 11 Well it is all subjective, but in my humble opinion, I am worried that that the golden age of Olympic ceremonies, that has inspired so many here for forty years may be coming to a close. Closing with an empty thud - full of post modern, inaccessible and confused creative segments, no global spirit, mixed production value, no regard for traditions, elitist flame blow outs. I did it my way was beautiful though - I have loved paris' 'way' when it came to the games itself, exceptional, unique and will impact and influencr all future games. That said, the jolly way for the ceremonies, and I have never been this harsh, But for me, they have been a self indulgent farce with only and handful redeeming moments. Quote

It seems that Jolly and company were all spent on the OC; and like absolutely CARED NOTHING for the Closing. They just let the whole evening limp along. His whole team didn't have the juice or cojones to put on a show to at least match the Opening even in ambition. Was it all because of the river? And without the Seine, they were reduced to blithering idiots?? Edited August 11 by baron-pierreIV Quote

Ironically, the Seine opening felt disjointed with performances, it very much reminded me how NBC covers the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, not much of a parade but a show filled with performances with the parade almost being secondary.
