I don't want to sound presumptuous, but by now, I have probably watched every Olympic opening or closing ceremony of which footage exists on YouTube or other websites. And the idea of incorporating artistic segments into those ceremonies only really started in Moscow in 1980, so there are actually not that many ceremonies to watch in order to get a pretty good basis for comparisons.

Rio did a fantastic job by mixing artistic segments and the proceeds. In fact, when the athletes were marching in, they showed dances in different parts of the stadium... Not agree at all with that.

This guy did so much damage to the Olympic movement and its popularity. He's the living embodiment of the "How do you do fellow kids" meme.

So fucking glad he'll finally be gone in 2025 and I won't have to see him again in Cortina. Mind you, i'm sure the IOC is already filled with people as bad or worse than him, but at least I hope the next president is more charismatic.

I really hope the next President is Sebastian Coe or John Coates

Ok I know it was another banging on long speech but I must say I really like Estanguet. Not afraid to take risks, he's done a great job here of what is an incredibly difficult thing to take on, & he actually seems to have a personality & enjoy what he does. I really wouldn't mind if he was to become President, even if it's probably too soon for him.

I agree.

Has it been normal to have Bach standing almost directly behind the OCOG speaker?

Yes.  Where else would he stand?  It depends on the OBS cameras if they want to cut him out or not.  Remember, I don't evne think they had a camera rehearsal for this Closing since Athletics only ended yesterday!!

Huh? I was just saying that the "more artistic" opening and closing ceremonies started in Moscow in 1980. That wasn't a dig against Rio 2016 (whose ceremonies I liked, by the way) or anything.

They did rehearsals every night between each day of athletics.

I think Rio has the best cauldron extinguishing ever. The rain and the singing extinguishing the flame is just genius and poetic

Some parts.  How could you without the actual set?  The actual bodies of the athletes, etc., etc.   The actual camera locations, etc., etc.

Athens extinguishing was pretty cool having the girl at one end of the stadium blowing out the flame at the other end.

Me too. For shame of being from the same country.

They may have had elements of the scenery at the Stade de France that they rehearsed between athletics sessions; although obviously, it was impossible to rehearse the whole thing in one night. It had to be done segment by segment.

But in this case, there are really amateurish mistakes here, unforgivable things, which almost don't even require rehearsal to be successful. The saturation of colors, the camera shots in the void...

I agree. Loved it. And the carnival afterwards, and the fireworks!
