baron-pierreIV Posted June 22, 2024 Report Posted June 22, 2024 (edited) So, together on the Final Sunday? -- and, of course, it will mean simultaneous Medals ceremony at Closing -- which would be TERRIFIC in my book! And this would also mean, just blocking off city streets JUST ONCE!! Now, why didn't anybody think of that before?? I also think -- and I will propose it to them -- it should be the FIRST marathons run to 20mi and 28 meters!! In view of global warming, it should no longer be the full 26.2 mi. And organizers forget that the original runner - Pheidippedes died running that distance! Plus the 26.2mi distance was ARBITRARILY set at the London Games of 1908 -- nothing to do with the real distance P actually ran in Greece. Edited June 22, 2024 by baron-pierreIV Quote
ejaycat Posted August 2, 2024 Report Posted August 2, 2024 I hope the marathon goes through some diverse and different areas that are not typically shown on TV. Play up Los Angeles' diversity. For example, it'd be great to see runners on TV, and in person, running under this arch (both photos taken by me): Quote

I assume they'll do the same as Paris and have one marathon Saturday and the other Sunday. I'd argue having one race with men's and women's divisions would rob the women of their spotlight, even though that's the way non-Olympic marathons are usually done. Quote

The combined race for '28 is what LA28 has hinted it. And it makes total sense to me. As you said, the other major marathons around the world are done that way. As for robbing the women of the spotlight, I don't think so. There are only about 125 runners per gender--which might even go down for '28. Start off for the women say at 7:30AM while it's cool. Then let the men start at 8:00am. By the time they reach Memorial, they probably would've caught up with each other-- and the cameras, of course, concentrate only on like the top 3 and then the other 7 or 8 who stagger in behind them. And in terms of prep logistics and security, it works perfectly well: the dislocation to city streets and clean-up happens only once. (NOTE: The regular LA Marathon happens in March -- so they will probably use that route (if a new one is laid out) --and that would be the perfect test run and trial for Team USA marathoners for July 31.)
