what the hell are they going to do with $130 million? every time i see a stadium refresh the price is always closer to a billion, and i imagine they need aquatics and general interest indoor event space as well.

Just saying, Panam Sports got a default from Colombia and even them didn't need to openly offer money to beg someone to host their games. Actually, they managed their condrum amazingly as noted by the article, in six weeks. (It helps that 1, Lima was the winning bidder and they had hosted already recently in 2019, and 2, unlike the commies, the PanAms are directly and indirectly related to the Olympic Games, which does help.)

How many months there was since the Dan was pulled in Victoria?

It should come close to covering the operational costs. And to be honest, the Commonwealth Games hosts shouldn't really be taking on massive capital costs anyway - with the notable exception of the athletes village, which can serve as social housing after the games.

Since Guilga has already compared the Commonwealth Games to the Pan-American Games, it's worth noting that the Pan-Ams work perfectly fine with a temporary athletics stadium seating only 13,000. An 18,000 seat Kuala Lumpur Stadium should be acceptable. Kuala Lumpur also has a decent aquatics center, a velodrome, a cricket stadium, and so on. They shouldn't really need to build any new venues.

Oh, good to know about these facilities. This absolutely can work. Now I gotta imagine, however. How doesn't they bid earlier? Did they assumed that they would have to build everything new? Actually this might be the golden question: many sport organizations always throw crazy requirements that could bankrupt the hosts who also feel the need to build even more extravaganza, just to that to be not even needed because what already exists is perfectly viable. The IOC is trying to tackle this on their end with their Agenda 2020 but as we seen with Cortina sliding track debacle, people feel that national pride is more important than logic. I don't think people on these IFs and Committees are ready for this reality check. The Olympics might need the glamour, but does the Commonwealth Games?

Would Malaysia had a shot with what they have without much construction had they budded back then? Of course, excluding Australia of the equation.

The Commonwealth Games has required large venues in the past. For example 40,000 seats at the athletics stadium. I would guess that hurts a lot of potentially viable bids from countries like Malaysia.

Good to know, but the question now is if it still does. This really depends of the event really, for the commies, we are talking about an event whose importance has diminished greately across the last few decades, mounting criticisms of what bring this event togheter, the colonial legacy of the Britsh Empire, notwhitstanding. If anything else, the CGF has to reevaluate itself after this mess if they survive, review their impact in today's world and for the participating countries. They doesn't have the benefit of be directly linked to a path to Olympic glory, they have however a shared history between the countries that take part on it, and i feel that the latter can also be the cause of their downfall.

Malaysia already has a large stadium with an athletics track...
