Alexa, this is the final announcement. I don't just need a big Irish name...I need the biggest of them all. Don't let me down...

 

OK that's it Alexa, you're sacked - bring on the real opener!

 

They had to appear eventually, and what could be more suitable for the night where we finally find what we've been looking for since December 1? We have visited Munster, Ulster, and Connacht so far, so we need to go to Leinster, the province of the capital city - and the home of the only place we could finish the crawl. The greatest pub of them all. Welcome to the iconic Temple Bar, Dublin!

Dozens of pub crawls end here, and that's just tonight - but none are more special than this. It's time to announce our winner for the Dublin Olympics, so please welcome back to the stage one of the most famous & most available Dubliners of all, Bono!

 

B: Thank ye. To be sure, it's been a great contest, on The Edge right through to the final. And before I announce the winner, I can say this'll be the most watched ceremony ever, broadcast live on every iPhone on the planet! Sure, whether they want it or not, because that's what we do... Anyway it gives me great Pride to declare that the winner is...ow! Ow! What's this about?! This is meant to be my job!

The final result was A: 12. B: 7. I was sure for ages I'd need to vote again, but no - it turned out comprehensive.

And so after 17 years and presumably 34 attempts, including in his home city, @Scotguy II has finally won a GB logo comp! No less a figure than Rob (the London version) said it was unbelievable that you've never done it, but finally the non-existent trophy will cross the ditch to Scotland (or cross the world to Wellington, I don't know if he's still there). Congrats at last, and congrats to @Glacib too for getting to the final. I think @krow wants to buy you a beer. Krow! Krow - don’t spike Scotguy’s drink! It's going to be a long night...

And that's it for 2023-24. Thank you to all the participants and voters, especially @Sir Rols for the usual grid-making, advice, and additional quips for the announcements , and for being one of our winners alongside @Scotguy II. For now though, we are in the Temple Bar. It's Saturday night. And at the fifth time of asking, that wombat over there is paying for the drinks for once. Party time!

I actually have a grave confession to make - I don’t really like Guinness! I was put off it when I went to Ireland and the locals insisted at every opportunity to force that black, bitter muck down my throat. Yuck!

Anyway, back to business…

About bloody time Scotty! What took you so long? I think I’m as relieved as you are. After 17 years, those poll rounds must have been tense and excruciating - I know that now from bitter experience. At least you didn’t have to sweat through a server crash and extension. Seriously though, well deserved. Like last year when @Bear posted his Reykjavik entry, when you posted yours in December I really thought this could finally be your year. Congrats Mate, so happy to finally see you on the Honour Roll.

And @Glacib - you really had some passionate supporters. And I agree with them that was a really clever concept. For me,  just thought you could have done a bit more embelishment with it - it looked like the start of a great logo concept than the end point. But that’s just me - others loved it and I thought it was definitely worthy to make it to the final.

@yoshi. What a great edition this year! Thanks so much - the past two years I’ve really had fun working on the comp with you, they’ve been vintage. And this year the tables turned, you were the pessimistic one when it looked like we only had two logos, while I was optimistic one for once. The comp wouldn’t be still going if not for your enthusiasm. A big thank you and raise your glasses to Yoshi. Slainte!

Usually at this time, I make a few observations on the state of the comp. I think we had two excellent cities this time round - it’s getting harder and harder to think where next to go - and the contestants rose to the challenge. And there were some good suggestions put out there - @Australian Kiwi, Yoshi and I really liked your idea about count backs for tie-breaks. We may well consider that if we face the situation again in future. Yoshi, I’m sure, would be more comfortable to do that than to have to make such a big, loaded decision. But no, AustralianFan, we’re not going to consider participant medals - pointless!

As I said above, I really had fun on this year’s comp, and I’ve been refreshed and inspired to perhaps (temporarily, don’t worry Yoshi) jump in the driver’s seat again for a new project. Just a little teaser - keep a look out in June-July in the lead up to some big event happening in Paris this year.

Finally, I know this is Dublin, and don’t want to upset the locals, but one final musical tribute to the winner…

FFS sake AF, why? They already get on the Honour Roll (which is perpetual), get an announcement pic, and the sheer bragging rights. Why do we need to add a pixel trophy to the mix - it’s implied. I’m sure the winners would prefer showing off their logo than some pixel trophy.

C’mon, show some respect and stop trying to shift the attention to you when this is Scotguy’s moment in the spotlight.

Congratulations! Your's wasn't my favorite to win, but it really was meant to be yours the cup this time, the numbers shown it. It was almost every round, you being ahead even if by a slim margin sometimes just to skyrocket ahead to leave the rest in tiebreak chaos like in the semi. Now, in the final, it wasn't even close, which shows that your's was a very deserved winner.

Guess i can only ask to you enjoy your party! That if someone doesn't think the party is his instead for some reason.

All kudos to @Scotguy II.  You created an amazing logo design for Dublin 2036. Also adaptable for any Dublin big event.

As I said in the other thread, I actually couldn't believe it when I read @Scotguy / @Scotguy II hadn't won this competition before. It feels like a historic wrong...actually, not wrong - because every winner has been deserved...a historic anomaly has been well and truly righted. You join the pantheon, at the top of Mount GamesBids (I may be mixing metaphors here), and can now look down on the mere mortals who will never know the joy of having their logo shining above all the others in the great drone show in the sky.

Enjoy your win. Like Rols, I am not a fan of the stodgy Irish black stuff that's apparently marketed as a beer. But I may well pour an Irish whiskey to toast your win.
