Why Chamonix was not part of Albertville 1992?

Chamonix has a glorious history in the Olympic Games. Why was it excluded? Why at Albertville 1992 the Alpine Ski runs were held in Val d'Isère and not in Chamonix that is closer? Chamonix hosts ski WC events (at La Verte des Houches piste), as much as Val d'Isere does, but it's quite nearer to Albertville (nearly 30km less).

It is about the same driving distance.

VDI is in the same départment as Albertville.

VDI regularly hosted WC races at the time, Chamonix didn‘t.

Chamonix wasn‘t used in 1968 either (neither was VDI).

Michel Barnier, one of the two co-chair of Albertville 92 was also President of Savoie Department.

Jean-Claude Killy, the other Co-Chair, was from Val d'Isère.

For one of a few possible reasons? 

Maybe Chamonix was not asked and/or did not want to share the glory? 

Maybe Chamonix is content with its 1924 place in history? 

Maybe Chamonix would not put in the upgrades needed for a post-war WOGs?

There was a (lost) bid from Chamonix+Annecy for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
So the previous answers from other commenters are much more convincing.
