Thankyou all for viewing and/or participating in this Live Chat. It was fun and some quite unexpected news today out of left field.

It's nice for a change to have an event centered around bidding since we thought those were all in the past.  Don't think we'll ever see a day like this again!

"We recommend a double allocation for the next Winter editions"

It happened.  We officially have a double!

Does someone have some towels to wipe all this egg off my face?  Wow, this was almost a triple

I remember once-upon-a-time when a certain someone around here was running around SO adamantly saying “just because the IOC did something once, that doesn’t automatically mean that they’d do it again, yada, yada, yada!”

Yet, here we are! Not only did they essentially do a “double” again, but they did it with the SAME TWO countries as last time! And then to top it all off, they practically do a TRIPLE-“fetish” with Switzerland!!! So maybe get a pan instead to cook all those eggs with!! :lol:

No the article on the IOC website confirms decision will be made at IOC Session in Paris. It is just the IOC finding some flexibility in the Charter.

Flexibility? More like the IOC being Plastic Man in flexing, bending & torquing like an Olympic gymnast in order to get the results they ultimately want.

The Olympic “Charter” means absolutely nothing if it gets in the way of the IOC’s ultimate goals/decision making. When someone makes their OWN rules, they can bend or break them whenever they want. Not exactly a pillar of ethics.

And we’re seeing it on full-display here & now. Like this “privileged dialog” stuff now with Switzerland. Seems like nothing more than another ambivalent label that Bach has pulled out of his rear-end.

And what’s more, it over-rides “Continuous Dialogue”. The Amex Platinum Card of bidding. Don’t leave home without it!

if only the swedish royal family had agreed to a coca-cola themed gala in the royal palace for the IOC, this all could have turned out so differently.

I justed visited the palace in summer. Way too unglamourous for the IOC anyway.

Interested to see where the Switzerland 2038 bid goes I have to imagine it's hard to plan 14+ years in advance

With the speed of such voting and referendums in Switzerland, they might need that timeframe.

They haven’t quite got 2038 in the bag just yet but they do have the inside running or “preferred” status.

For Switzerland, it’s a 3-part plan before they get to the 2038 Host Election:

1. “Priveliged Dialogue” starts now and ends in 2027 for Switzerland and by then if have come up with a more compact venues plan and majority public support maintained, then they will be elevated to Targeted Dialogue for 2038.

2.  Six months after that, with all the “i’s” dotted and “t’s” crossed to the FHC’s satisfaction, the IOC EB approves them to go to a Host Election later in 2027.

3.  Games Preparation:  from 2027 to 2038, Switzerland will have 11 years (just like Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032 did) to prepare for the Games.

Day 2 IOC EB Press Conference tonight, same time:   6pm Paris time, C.E.T.

Journalists at these have a habit of asking questions of things both on, and not on,the agenda for that day of the Executive Board.

Here’s the link for livestream or replay:

Actually, per the INC'S news conference, they have until the END of 2027.  So, if they work out a more compact venue plan and have a successful public referendum, we can expect them to be raised to Targeted Dialogue in/around December 2027 with a vote at the IOC Session during LA 2028.  That will give Switzerland 2038 nine and a half years to prepare.

Excellent pickup, thanks @Karenina  and yes, 9.5 years to prepare.

I think Switzerland will get it all done and win a public referendum because there’s nothing like the certainty and confidence that the IOC have just given to the country that the 2038 Games are their’s if they do these things.   I think all stakeholders and the government, business and public support in Switzerland will consolidate and strengthen with this ‘certainty’ given to them on 29 November 2023.
