LA28 to break longstanding tradition with corporate venue names at Games

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2025/aug/14/la28-olympics-corporate-venue-names-clean-policy?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=bluesky

Have to say, I don't really have a problem with this. I think keeping the Look clean is more important and it sounds like that's going to be maintained as a policy.

It's about TIME.  IT's really stupid to change the names of well-known venues just for 2/1.5 weeks.  Really awkward too.   Honda gets a break also as a major LA28 sponsor.

^ I was surprised when the site of the 1932 swimming events was even considered as a venue for 2028.

At most Olympics, both swimming and diving are in the same location. In 1984 they took place in a pool and diving tower built on the USC campus, funded by McDonald's.

The original plans were to build a temp pool on top of the main baseball field of USC. But plans were changed to a temp pool in SoFi Stadium. I don't really know why USC can't be used again instead of venues in Inglewood and Pasadena. However, the cost of one new venue alone can cause an OOC's budget to rocket.

This was the pool at USC in 1984. Most summer Olympics for at least 40 years have built indoor locations for their pools. So in LA's last games it was different with an outdoor setting. Although the 1992 games in Barcelona held diving in a outdoor location with a great city backdrop.

LA28 is seeking to relocate Diving from the 1932 Pool to the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center after analysis showed that using the RBAC would save money and resolve athlete safety concerns:

https://la28.org/en/newsroom/la28-updates-diving-venue-for-the-2028-olympic-games.html

I always wondered about placing Diving at the John Argue Pool.  From their renderings, the re-purposed venue looked really wonky.  The move to Pasadena makes sense.  (When they first assigned it to the John Argue location, I think it was just to have another link with a 1932 venue.  Am not at all familiar with the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center-- other than it's open air; but I think moving Water Polo and Artistic Swimming there (from Long Beach) might soon follow.

So, LA28 claims they are saving $17.6 million with the move -- but still budgeting $150 million for the Coliseum re-do to Athletics ($100 mil) and $50 mil for the Cricket Stadium in Pomona.  I don't know why they didn't go with the Oakland Stadium for Cricket?

I think the field in the Oakland Coliseum is too small for ICC cricket, otherwise it would have been a good choice

No, the field in Oakland is perfect.  See article.  There's a BART station right there; and TONS of parking space.

Major League Cricket Comes to Oakland | June 2025 Matches & Travel Guide

I am sure Stanford or even some Oakland hotels would've gladly stepped in as the Village.

Comparing the diagrams showing the dimensions from the recent matches there to the ICC guidelines for international cricket, I think Bear is right.

If I've read it right, I think some of the boundaries would be too short for international cricket.

The ICC Standard Playing Conditions define the minimum and maximum size of the playing surface for international matches. Law 19.1.3[1] of ICC Men's Test Match Playing Conditions as well as ICC Men's One Day International Playing Conditions states:

19.1.3 The aim shall be to maximise the size of the playing area at each venue. With respect to the size of the boundaries, no boundary shall be longer than 90 yards (82 metres), and no boundary should be shorter than 65 yards (59 metres) from the centre of the pitch to be used.

/\/\  Oh, I see.  Altho, of course, they could've taken away many front row seats and expanded the field.  (They do that for a soccer configuration.)  But I guess they still wanted the Cricketeers to have that real OV experience.

/\/\  So, they're cutting the SF Bay Area for the other Football prelims -- going back to the 1984 model.  So, unless they leave one venue alone in the SF Bay Area (Levi Stadium?) it'll probably be NY area, DC, Harvard?  Miami or Atlanta? + SF Bay Area.

I think this is a bad idea for a few reasons:

  1. Unlike the canoe slalom and softball events in Oklahoma City, having football venues that far away from the host city would lead to longer travel times for athletes and spectators.
  2. Using venues in states closer to California (such as Arizona, Idaho, Oregon, Nevada and Utah) is close enough to the original plan of having venues spread across California.
  3. Fewer people are willing to travel far away from the host city. At last year's (2024) Olympics, most football matches had half full or less stadiums. Compare that to 2012, where most stadiums were packed.

Here's what I'd do. I'd keep the venues in the West Coast, using the following venues:

  • Empower Field at Mile High [76,125] or Dick's Sporting Goods Park [18,061], Denver, Colorado

  • Allegiant Stadium [61,000], Paradise (Las Vegas), Nevada

  • State Farm Stadium [63,400], Glendale (Phoenix), Arizona

  • Providence Park [25,218], Portland, Oregon

  • Rice–Eccles Stadium [51,444] or America First Field [20,213] Salt Lake City, Utah

  • Lumen Field [68,740], Seattle, Washington

I don't believe SF Bay Area will be reinstated; the organizing committee have made it clear that no one else will host in California.

Well, I don't believe LA28 is going in THAT direction.  They need some presence in the East Coast -- both to get East Coast folks excited about a West Coast event and also, to provide other regions of the world with broadcast content if events in LA are at a lull, time-wise.

And a 3rd reason -- for having all prelims, quarters and semi-s in the same time zone is so that winners and losers are known ALL at the same time; and therefore, no forcing a loss to avoid playing a certain nation in the next round.

… add to Arup’s credit is that they are also working on the LA2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

@Bear not sure what part of LA2028 / projects that Arup are involved in?

I actually haven't heard, from a quick glance it seems they're doing work on the green space in Exposition Park. Our Infrastructure Partner is AECOM, so whatever Arup is doing here is probably minor work or work not directly related to the Games

I googled Arup.com just now at LA2028 and the AI search results shows a substantial role they’re playing at the next Olympic and Paralympic Games:

Arup has been selected as the venue design engineering lead for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. They will be responsible for the engineering and technical design of the venues for the event. Arup's role will involve working with existing structures, designing the energy strategy for the Games to be "energy positive," and focusing on a sustainable approach by aiming for zero waste.

Key aspects of Arup's involvement:
  • Venue Engineering:
Arup will lead the technical and engineering design for the LA 2028 venues.

  • Sustainability Focus:
Arup will contribute to the Games' goal of being the first "Energy Positive Games" and achieving zero waste through venue design and overlay reuse.

  • Existing and Temporary Venues:
Arup's designs will focus on utilizing existing and temporary venues, minimizing new construction and ensuring materials are reused or returned to their original state after the Games.

Arup's Role in Context:
  • Arup's selection underscores the LA 2028 Games' commitment to a sustainable model, which prioritizes the use of existing infrastructure.

  • Their engineering expertise will be crucial in meeting the ambitious targets for energy generation and waste reduction that define the LA 2028 Games.

  • This involves working with venue operators, regional utility partners, and technology innovators to achieve these environmental goals

Browsing the LA28 job listings to gain some insight as to what kinds of things are happening at the OCOG, and this listing caught my attention:

Director, Satellite Villages

Quote

The Director of Satellite Villages will be responsible for the planning, and operational delivery of all decentralized Village accommodation sites outside the main Olympic and Paralympic Villages Reporting to the Head of Village Management. This includes three Satellite Villages, Grooms and Veterinary accommodations, and designated Football Hotels. The role oversees a team dedicated to managing these sites and ensuring consistent service standards across all locations.

So in addition to the UCLA village + football accommodations, we'll have three satellite villages. One of them has to be the OKC Village for softball + canoe slalom, but what about the other two?

My guesses are one in Orange County for surfing at Trestles and Volleyball in Anaheim, and another one in eastern LA County for the sports in Pomona, Industry, El Monte, and Arcadia. I don't have any basis for the Orange County theory other than vibes, but for the eastern LA County theory it's because the listing mentions veterinary accommodations, so maybe a reference to the horses and Santa Anita? We'll see

What about the Media Village, isn’t that meant to be at University of Southern California (USC)?

UCLA will be the main Athletes' Village.  USC will be the Media Village.  The Grooms will probably be housed in converted stables so they are close call to the horses at Santa Anita.

No, the cricket & Volleyball athletes will be staying at UCLA.  The reason they kept Cricket in the LA area rather than in NYC which would've brought another supposed $100 million in Indian TV rights, was that so that cricketeers could enjoy the true OV spirit at UCLA with the other athletes.  Same thing w/ the Indoor Volleyballers.  They will stay in UCLA.  They will get the Express Olympic Lanes on the 5 on their Game Days.

And then the Outlier Villages in OKC and 4 Football villages in the East.

If other athletes want to say in hotels closer to their venues, that is on the NOCs to pay for.

With my job I have a lot of trips to LA and so am planning to visit some venues or venues-to-be, to photograph from a distance construction progress and/or overlay preparations.

Overlay installation at existing venues of course will be some way off yet.

Marine Stadium at Long Beach, the 1500m flat water rowing venue  I was going to visit first when there’s sign of preparations starting.

But if you are aware of any venue or games site where something is happening sooner would be much appreciated.  Can’t seem to find a webcam of Marine Stadium.

I don't believe we'll be seeing any Games overlays until around 2027, or at least until after the World Cup is over, since those overlays associated with FWC26 will take priority in the coming months (which you might be able to see, depending when you arrive)

Right now the only evidence of LA28 in the city is in City Hall, where the Olympic and Paralympic flags are, on several Metro rail cars (definitely on the E Line, not sure if the other lines have them as well) with the PlayLA branding (including the Oly + Para emblems), and some murals that were created with the initial emblem launch in 2020 (admittedly I have yet to see them, so I'm not sure where they are). If any other LA forum member has seen LA28 branding elsewhere, feel free to correct me :)
