Yeah, it's not up to Annastacia.

Powderfinger are a little too obvious I think - but a good bet for the Closing at least. Good chance Kylie will get another Olympic whirl given she's still pumping out bangers like Padam Padam.

I love Padam Padam - so catchy! But honestly, I think Kylie’s at the twilight of her career. I’d prefer her to just gently scale back rather than try to plug on to prove herself?keep attention? and end up becoming a grotesque parody of herself like Madonna is these days.

Katie Miller-Heidke is one my favourite Brisbane women artists. But she’d be getting on in 10 years time as well. And belting out “Imagine” is not her style.

Yeah, i agree. The most notable names that come to mind have all been there done that - Kylie, Delta, Christine, Vanessa etc. Hopefully by 2032 there are some new Aussie artists that can wow at the opening just as much as their predecessors did.

Yeah, Sydney was lucky to get them in their prime. I’m sure some other hot new face will emerge by 2032.

I can think of two local entertainers with massive overseas followings and exposure, who right now exactly appeal to the age group who, come 2032, the IOC will be most keen to court and cultivate…

The Olympic Rings looking might fine last night in the Athens Panathinaikou Stadium, birthplace of the modern Olympics.

Can picture them on the Storey Bridge in 2032.

I wonder if the Sydney Rings are still around...I remember seeing the pink rings from the Martin Place live site at a scrap metal yard.

Yes I was wondering that too.  They looked fantastic mounted in the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 2000.

Perhaps the Storey Bridge in Brissie might display them in 2032?

Bluey would be the perfect mascot for Brisbane (the show is set there)........wonder if the IOC would try something different like this. Mascots have got a bit ho-hum.

Bluey would be an absolutely fantastic mascot for the games.

The closest Olympic precedent would be hows Asterix was used as an official mascot for Paris’ 1992 bid.

It would all require licensing negotiations and agreements though. Like what the AFL is doing with Warner Bros to be able to use the Tassie Devil for the new AFL Tasmanian team. The ABC would be the ones holding Bluey’s license, so maybe that might just be possible. And it could work both ways - I could absolutely see Bluey doing episodes featuring the Olympics, and Paralympics, in the lead-up to the games.

Or f*ck it. Maybe Bluey could just hijack the official mascot(s) like Fatso did.

AND the Grandstand was named the Cathy Freeman stand today!!

I was there that night in a seat just above Juan...having carried the torch into Byron Bay on Aug 23.

Absolutely fantastic.  That’s made my day @TorchbearerSydney

“Freeman said she was deeply honoured by the decision.”

“This stadium and Sydney Olympic Park hold a truly special place in my heart and that will never change,” she said.

“I hope that my story continues to inspire generations of girls and boys to chase their own dreams in sport and life.”

Incredible vocal range when Vanessa sang Heroes Live Forever at the Sydney 2000 Opening Ceremony.

Now that Coates has nominated Suncorp Stadium as possible for the Opening Ceremony, and a few speculations about it on the venues thread (like would this be the fist rectangular stadium opening?), has made me wonder just how it would be handled logistically.

Trying to research RIO’s OC, which I believe also used a more rectangular pitc, I came across this:

“The other problem facing the organisers is the ceremony venue — Maracana stadium. The stadium was renovated for the 2014 football World Cup in Brazil. Primarily built for hosting football games, the stadium doesn’t have an athletes track surrounding it, thus limiting the use of floor space. The stadium also does not have a big entrance, forcing the organisers to limit their creativity and make do with smaller props.” Source

If floor space and entrance/exits were a challenge for the Maracana, how would Suncorp fare?

Woiuld it be big enough for an Olympic OC? Could all the athletes in the March of Nations even fit on that field?

Does look like a very tight fit in there, doesn't it.
